There is even more infighting on this board than there is at Carlton.
Clubs have so many people involved with such large networks with connections outside AFL land. Especially Carlton.
I don’t understand people’s desire to tarnish some posters credibility whilst laud others.

jpfalvo could very well be hearing things from people within club land.
I respect everything shared on this board equally, but also take it with an understanding that often information shared from within a club can be shared as an opinion or thoughts of a minority group and doesn’t always turn out to be the final actions taken by the club. This doesn’t mean it wasn’t spoken about, or have legs at some point.

Information I’ve shared in the past has turned out to be correct sometimes and has not eventuated sometimes. But I will alway attempt to share what I know when I’m confident what I’ve seen or been told is correct.

Please try to be nice people. We are all here for the same reason. We all suffer from the same curse. Carlton is more than just a sporting team for us, it defines us. It has already cause us so much pain over the last 25 years, we don’t need to inflict more upon each other. For when the good times finally come, the party down the Blue Mile will continue for months.

Great post, especially around reputation and stability. My read on the situation (not necessarily my view and certainly not involving any inside information) is that Cook is going to play the long game here by sticking with Voss for at least his initial 3 year term and try to provide him with increased support over the off season via new assistant coaches.

The rationale for this approach in my head is:

(1) It sends the message externally that we will back in our people and honour our contractual commitments. Carlton haven’t done this in recent times and it’s hurt our brand in the market as you’ve outlined. Good people won’t want to come if they feel like they need to be constantly looking over their shoulder during their tenure. I suspect this is part of the reason we end up with guys like Lloyd, Hamill and Clarke rather than more experienced and higher credentialed equivalents.

(2) It sends the message internally to the players that they need to push through the troughs and adversities of football. They’ve seen off a few coaches now and nothing changes. It gives the club the opportunity to really see which players are good cultural fits and which may not be.

Time will tell whether this works but that’s my current read on what might happen.
My read as well. We have a long long way to go to fixing our brand. What's wrong with us is one of the biggest problems a footy club can have. If you can't get good people to work for you, if you're not one of the destination clubs then you're stuffed. You have 0 chance of ever even competing for a premiership.

Our tactics and player development is bottom of the table and that's not up to Voss. It's because he's got rubbish around him. The senior coach is a big driver but he can't do everything, especially at this level.

The senior coach only becomes an issue when he stops listening to his staff and starts trying to do everything on his own and becomes inflexible which I suspect could be the problem and if it is we will know, he will be gone.

That message needs to be sent to the players. The players did it to Ratten, Malthouse, they did it really badly to Teague where they lay down their guns and stop trying once the jungle drums start beating. The players, the leadership group. It's their job to play and to back the coach up, not let them down. Unfortunately that happens too often at Carlton.

It will work if we succeed. That means we clean out these assistant coaches for higher profile people. Getting those people could be extremely hard. They are out there but the don't go to us. How do we get them to us? It's how ever long it takes to fix our reputation. I would be grovelling on hands and knees to get Neil Balme to us but again, I don't think he would come, he's an example of a sort after person who would only work for a few select clubs which we would definitely not be one of.

In the meantime we need to be looking at a few people like Eddie Betts as a development coach. Joel Selwood if he's done with rugby league. Damien Hardwick in some sort of role, senior assistant or coaching and innovation manager. We need a midfield coach. I'd be keeping an eye on Adam Simpson if West Coast pull the trigger there. Maybe have a go at some bigger fish such as Leppitch. These people who have been at Hawthorn under Clarkson, Richmond under Hardwick, Geelong under Scott. They come from clubs with really good systems and game plans and they are more likely to bring something than our lot who have been at clubs which have not been successful or not as successful. People from clubs which have had sustained success is where we need to source our coaches. But for some reason for the last 23 years we either don't or can't.

People like Brian Cook and Neil Balme can and that is why they go to clubs and those clubs have sustained success and win premierships. They bring a bit of magic with them and that is success and reputation and everyone wants to work under them which gives them the opportunity to pick from the best as opposed to us who pick from the rest.

On fire today gman

Well, you then miss the mark of what other clubs have in place in this area

The likes of Elliott are from a different era, one that would struggle with the complexity of the role and its narrow parameters
Tom Elliot will not put his hand up for the board. I already said this, he was keen around the Brendan Bolton turmoil but was advised against it. Thats from someone very close to him. Now he is 0 chance.

Tom Elliot skillset is no different to MLG or Sayers. Passionate Carlton business men. Complexity is the same to all and they all do their best...

But at some point, decision making over time gets questioned and we move onto someone else...

This isnt a fortune500 company, footy club boards are different beasts, that live or die by onfield results.

I think you and some others are still missing my point.

It's the mentality, that someone who falls into the category of "consultant" isn't qualified or capable to be a president or board member in a club's era of success

Many clubs have had "consultants" as presidents and board members during contending/flag winning eras

Following report has a damning line by current acting CEO of PWC:

In her open "mea culpa" letter this week, Kristin Stubbins, the acting chief executive of PwC Australia, listed three ways the company had "failed". PwC had breached confidentiality, had poor governance, and had a culture at the time of "aggressive marketing" in its tax business that allowed inappropriate behaviour.

The Carlton Football Club must rebuild its foundation

President must be replaced
Board must be replaced
Head of football must be replaced
CEO only stays if he has the energy
All assistant coaches must be replaced
Captain must be replaced
15 players must be delisted and replaced by draftees or goers from state leagues.

NB- No new board members can be appointed unless they contribute to winning games of football. Diversity does not matter.

So by this you mean we go and play in the E.D.F.L for about 8 years then??

I actually think Sayers should step down this year. He has failed in the coaching appointments he has been involved in. The PwC tax scandal can be the circuit breaker for leaving early. It’s an awful look for him.

I would like a full and open process to appoint a new president rather than just handing over to one of the vice presidents. Most of the rest of the board are relatively new so I’d be happy for them to stay on and have their turn.

Agree and it is a bit of a shame really. He’s got go in him. Anyway his term is up end of next year so doubt he will have too much influence moving forward.

Yet there was a function at the club on the Monday night following the Sydney game and guess who was there have a drink with board directors, ex-players etc?
You guessed it - Craig Mathieson.
If Mathieson had a heated debate about us being crap I think that’s a good thing. We need more people on the board that care.

That’s rubbish.
You think it’s a good thing to publicly have a crack in front of family members, coaches, staff and players in the rooms after a game?
Mathieson has been part of the crap decision making on the board for years and he’s had an appropriate forum to air his opinions and take the club to a more successful place.
He is an example of everything that is wrong with our club.

i dont mind the heated debates ...agree not in front of family members but in front of players, staff and coaches no problem. someone needs to ask the hard questions of the playing group. cant keep letting poor performances go.

weve got no idea who on the board is shit/good. but collectively we've been pretty poor.

im not a fan of mathiesons (mainly due to pokies) but i want board members that care.
