Pies sign Malthouse for 2007

By Jake Niall
December 24, 2005

Michael Malthouse has agreed to coach Collingwood until the end of 2007, having yesterday agreed to a one-year extension to his contract.

Malthouse's manager, Peter Sidwell, met the Magpies yesterday and came to terms on the new contract, which gives Malthouse two years in which to resurrect the team's fortunes.

The Eddie McGuire-led Collingwood board had agreed to renew Malthouse's contract for 2007, while setting parameters for the negotiations with chief executive Greg Swann that ended positively yesterday. Terms of the extended contract are unclear, but given Collingwood's poor performances in 2004 and 2005, it would be a surprise if there were not significant performance clauses.

Malthouse is one of the highest-paid coaches in the game, with his present contract estimated at $800,000 annually or more.

McGuire indicated at the club's annual meeting last week that he believed Malthouse was still the man to take the club forward on the field - the president calling him the best coach in the AFL - and confirmed that the club was involved in negotiations with his management.

2 years will be more than enough time with the new blood coming through IMO. A sensible deal has been made...

What happens if we finish bottom 4 for the 3rd season in a row.

Shouldnt they be making this decision at the end of the season.

As overly positive as it sounds....I'm happy. He is not the main reason behind our dismal showings in the past two years. Yes, as he has said before, the buck stops with the coach, but the injuries of the past two seasons and, he has admitted it, the 'draining' process which occurred in '04 as a result of the 50 point Grand Final loss the previous year, of course the side was going to struggle. The youth coming through are very talented, and the senior players do appear fresher than previous times. We just need to get that happy medium between the two.

The timing may be a little bit early, but I am happy. Eddie and co know what they are doing.

Not good enough Eddie :thumbsd:
It should have been a further two year extension on his present contract
Bucks won't be ready until then

Eddie could be right about Mick. Maybe, Mick is the right man for the job, but only time will tell. Does anyone think Mick will step down as coach of Collingwood if we don't make the 8?

McGuire chased Malthouse so vigourously and so publicly that to be seen not to now support him would be to admit he was wrong. Before he can be seen to be part of sacking Mick, he'll have to go through a distancing process so Mick is as safe for the next 2 years as any coach who's chairman has publically declared his full backing.

Actually, when a chairman backs a coach it tends to be the beginning of the end.

Malthouse has done nothing wrong. We may not have been a premiership side in the last few years if you take away the injuries, but we probably could have made the finals. If we had done that, nobody would be calling for Malthouse's sacking.

McGuire once again treating the members with contempt.

Doesnt announce nor foreshadow this at the AGM at all.

Then very cynically releases the details on the last business day before christmas.

Disgraceful :thumbsd:

:(

As someone said earlier in the thread, what happens if our performance's are yet again dismal for three consecutive years. I would have liked this to be sorted throughout 2006, not pre-season 2005/06

Really ? Disagree, certainly not the impression I got or was left with.

Ed's guilded the lilly once again on this one imo.

I don't really care if you disagree - the fact is he did

I think he flat out said he was in negotiations. A one year extension is smarter than two. Good move.

For those worried, I think if we're cod ordinary again next year, Malthouse will walk for free, especially if it's a spoon. He's said as much.

Hahaha. For free. Yeah right.

At his wage, he wasn't going to go anywhere. Why not see if we do well this year, then look at re-signing him?

Think of the psychology behind it...

It puts even more pressure on him to get the most out of our players ( performance clause) ... and also gives him an incentive knowing theres a possibilty that another is year available... for him to earn another 800 grand or so...

if i had to guess i'd say it was in his contract that if we do so ordinary, he can be pushed out for free.

We have so much money that we don't know what to do with it. If Malthouse really is that bad this year, it's not that big a deal to eat his salary for a season.

More importantly, we don't know if his contract is performance based. The additional year's salary may be dependent on his performance in 2006.

And pre re-signing the contract, the "performance clause" was that he might not have a job next year. That's also the incentive.

I'm very Hapy we signed him for a further year hes 1 of the best coaches going around if not the best.
He'll bring us to a flag before we get rid of him i'm sure
Good move Eddie :thumbsu: :thumbsu: :thumbsu: :thumbsu: :D

Ya reckon Butters wouldn't give him $800K+?? What about Heave Ho???

The contract's more about our protection than anything. Relax buddy!

good move. you should only sack a coach if there is someone available who can do a better job and i can't see anyone out there who can do that.
