Anyone else think this was the wrong thing to say publicly?

In a radio interview on ABC, a shattered Brent Harvey pointed the finger and named names, saying it was time for Sam Wright and Lachie Hansen to step up and show their potential.

"I think it is more our young guys not towing the line - the guys between 21-years and 25-years old - Sam Wright, Lachie Hansen - when are they going to step up?" Harvey said.

Just seeing if I'm out of step on this one, but I think this is an unforgivable thing to say publicly about one's team-mates

Hmmm very surprising to be saying these things in the open media. Usually this sort of talk is kept behind closed doors but maybe Boomer wants them to fire up a bit. Strange none the less.

Nah good on him i reckon.

The named players will feel ashamed and depending on their character they'll

either step up or it will set them back. I reckon Boomer Harvey would have

made a judgement about whether they could handle it before he decided to

say something.

He's right, but I agree it's the wrong thing for the captain to say. It's the kind of thing you should say to them in a team meeting.
Then again, as others have said - he might be trying to fire them up.

Didn't hear the interview. Might have been better if he added that he had also let the team down dreadfully on a few occasions with turnovers and missed shots at goal when the team desperately needed someone to convert a chance.

Let's be honest, he could have named about 16 names yesterday.

Sam Wright is probably their most promising player looking at the first 2 games. Harvey should be blaming others along with dud Hansen

He is right, not sure he should've said it publicly. Hansen is so flipping inconsistent - I am would hate to have him at my club - shits me to no end.

Nah that's miserable.

Fair enough to say they need more from that age range but to name players is just shit captaincy.

Played pretty poorly himself last week I believe too.

I reckon it shows strength. Shows they aren't excepting what is going on. When your leader singles you out, you better perform.

Rawlings said similar without naming names.

Do North fans prefer Hansen in the forward or back line?

Because I remember around draft time they were hyping up the future contests between Gumby and Hansen.

Boomer let us down yesterday, for sure.

But overall, he's probably frustrated at everything falling to him every time.

We've got enough supposed young talent, spanning back to the 2006 draft. When are they going to carry the team over the line? Damn straight Boomer should be frustrated. To single him out for one average game when he's created the mercurial countless times over the years would be ridiculous. He's 33 years old, cops the hard tag every week, and he captains the side. It's time for someone else to grab the baton.

Their skills are poor, often the players look disinterested, and nobody looks likely to take the game by the scruff of the neck besides Harvey. It isn't fair. He might seem petulant, but if these lazy kids can't take it and fall away because he's canned them in the media, it proves the point.

If they step up, however, even better. It might be what they need.

One thing's for sure - we can't go on another 6 years finishing a modest, battling 10th, with Harvey extracting every ounce of pace out of himself all day, every game, to scrounge out 3 point wins. It's not good enough.

Harvey and Rawlings were two of our better players yesterday!

I can't see how throwing young players under a bus is going to help anything. It's certainly not going to increase the respect for an already questionable captain in Boomer, and it's hardly going to help their form either.

I came home from the game and was shocked to read that Harvey had managed to get himself 27 disposals... He was laughably poor in the game and had next to no impact in a game where they were supposed to be fired up over the jumper nonsense, and Harvey was supposed to be primed to atone for his poor game last week.

Disgraceful thing for a captain to say about his teammates, and he even managed to get a factual inaccuracy in there, criticising Sam Wright as one of "the guys between 21-years and 25-years old" when Wright has yet to reach his 21st birthday.

Having a go at a 20 year old when you had 67% disposal efficiency and at one stage got beaten for a ground level ball in space by Ben Reid... :thumbsd:

When he accepted the captaincy, he also accepted that he would be singled out for criticism when the team gets flogged by 15 goals. That's part of the job. That's not to say that his play alone caused it, but that as a leader he's expected to ensure that these failures against top side don't keep happening - as you said, your team does have some young talent which has performed in lesser games.

Also, just fwiw, absolutely no-one gave Harvey a hard tag yesterday, he was left pretty much to run free.

I think Harvey has the runs on the board to say what he likes, and reasonably expect others to help him out for once.

To single him out for one bad game and then question his captaincy is laughable.

Look at the bigger picture. Would his match have been so poor if he had half the support Collingwood players gave their team-mates yesterday? No way. If all the other cogs in the side are clicking along, Harvey can shine as his natureal game.

As it is, he's having to do everything else too.

Harvey and North Melbourne probably decided it was time to put their names out there publicly that they need to stand up and deliver more. It has already been mentioned but Malcolm Blight taking control of the press conference stating David Pittman was pathetic, dropping him than magically reappearing the next week as an emergency and the marked improvement.

For Lachie Hanson especially it could be the wake up call the lad really needs to fire up.

This.

Getting flogged is usually more of a team effort than winning. Poor form from Harvey. He should apologise.
