Brett Ratten: One on One Interview

Interesting that him and Fev haven't spoken yet, some bad blood there or what?

Also he says that Setanta and Hendo will play a big role up forward, CHF/FF combo?

Pretty good interview all up, I'm glad the coach is a bit more positive than some of our supporters.

Good interview. One of the interesting things about this interview is that Cloke was not mentioned as either a forward option or a ruckman. You would think that Carlton have 5 ruckman at the club but for some reason Ratten didn't acknowledge Cloke as a ruckman. Could it be that he may be the one making way for McGuire?

Top read, cheers for that, B and S. Love the RattMan. Sounds like he's channelling Gary Ayres a bit with all those rhetorical questions though. Next it will be the Waites, the Robinsons, the Hampsons... all good but! :thumbsu::)

Good point. Is anybody interested in him? Someone should start a thread.

Really good interview.

Sets a few things (relatively) straight that may otherwise have been reasonably contentious.

Of particular interest is the bit about drafting. We all know that Hughes' strategy is to pick the best available talent and that will not be changing. We may well get a KPP but it is by no means a certainty like some have been saying. Also seems to me that barring a preseason training mis-hap, Maguire is almost a certainty to be selected by us in the draft. This has divided much of the supporter base but I am pleased to hear it, personally. What remains to be seen is if we'll take him at pick 59 or if there are more delistings to come. One thing is for certain: you wouldn't want to be coming to training in anything less than tip-top shape because competition for spots on the senior list is well and truly heating up.

It's good to hear the obvious, that the players were really hurting after the loss to the Lions. This will hold us in good stead heading forward, the players will be hungry to go one better at least.

The forward line is going to be intriguing. To me it looks like we won't have a set structure but rather an extremely flexibile setup whereby a number of players will be able to fill each position. Henderson, Setanta, Waite (occasionally), Kreuzer, Hampson will all spend time up there as tall forwards, probably complimented by medium forwards (Robinson, Walker) and by smaller forwards (Betts, Yarran, Garlett). Season 2010 promises to be full of excitement and surprise as we become less predictable and harder to match up on.

Also very pleasing to hear about Waite's recover going so well. Looks a near certainty, touch wood, to be lining up in Navy Blue come round 1.

A really good article and for the supporters that are left in the dark without inside conncections it really is a fantastic way to keep them relatively in the know and excited for the future. :thumbsu:

I wouldn't read too much from it. Last year he said Hartlett would be our CHF.

He'll try plenty of combinations. I doubt even he knows what his best setup is at the moment.

Taking a bit of convincing that we will benefit from less inside 50's. Guess he's saying we need to direct the ball better. Still I would have thought weight of numbers might reflect well on the scoreboard also.

Terrific read that!
Reading between the lines of that interview, I got the sense that our in-house mantra for the 2010 season is - be unpredictable. We've all spoken about it here, but Ratts emphasised it with an unpredictable forward line, where Waite & Kreuzer will play, how our ruck options will play out. Even when asked about Maguire, he made the point of saying that he can play back and forward.

Really looking forward to see the boys train early next week.

Love this statement,

Just on that, if you can actually reduce the opposition's score do you need to kick as many goals? So that will be the other task for the team. You don't need as many goalkickers when you're actually defending a little bit better.

Bring on 2010. :-)

Well, the tone of that interview suggests we are going to embark on a mini-rebuild. It might be a case of one step back in 2010, then 2 steps forward. Losing Fev is going to have a huge impact to our forward structure. Plenty of arguments to suggest we'll either be better or worse off in the short/long term. One thing we know though is there is lots of uncertainty about our forward line in 2010. Yes, we have bucketloads of talent, but building a forward structure, and adapting the gameplan ain't straightforward. It's a huge challenge. We are lucky we have such a brilliant midfield - means that developing forwards will have plenty of opportunity to develop their skills. The first 1/2 of 2010 is going to be especially hard. If we can somehow hang in there as our young side adjusts, we'll set ourselves up for a good season. :)

Of course out of the whole interview, the Herald Sun takes two lines out of the whole article and makes it seem as if Ratts is sooking about not recieving a call from Fev

its like clockwork, hey? When I saw the interview on AFL.com.au it was easy to see which part would be picked up by the tabloid media!

Have you seen the comments already on that Herald Sun article?!?! The Herald Sun have done well to make it seem like this is Ratten randomly going off about no phone call from Fevola, when it was actually one question in a wide ranging interview... in which I think he answered very well.

Yes i did see the comments, the line "it's pathetic how Ratten has come to the media to sook about Fev" just reinforces the amount of spin they added to the AFL.com article

Yeah i saw that stuff and went looking for the real interview

Unpredictable in every sense!

On one hand with everything going right there is no reason why we can't win an extra couple of games and make top 4.

Conversely, things could go wrong and we win only 8 or 9 games and finish 12th.

Unlike 2008 and 2009 where natural improvement was almost guaranteed in terms of total number of wins, 2010 will be very very different.

It was great seeing Rattens interview today and saying everything I was thinking and this is the way I think we will go
Also everyone forgets that Murphy,Gibbs ,Jamison, Joseph, Kreuzer,Hampson and Betts are all going to be better players this year

Backs: Joseph, Jamison, Thornton
Bower, Waite, Russell
, Austin, Armfield

Maguire, Carrazzo, Johnson, Browne

Midfield: Gibbs, McLean, Walker, Simpson
Judd, Murphy, Scotland, Hadley, Griggs

Rucks: Warnock, Hampson, Jacobs Kreuzer,

Forwards: Yarran, O’hAilpin, Houlihan, Robinson
Garlett, Kreuzer, Henderson, Betts, Hampson

In to our best 22 McLean, Warnock, Henderson
Out of the best 22 Fev and Stevens
We also have Walker, Waite, Jamison all coming back into the team

This will be 32 players that we will be picking our team from
we also have
Pick 12, Zach Tuohy, Peter Labi, Anderson and Tiller to prove that they can play

I don’t think Wiggins will be on the list, I hope Cloke leaves and Fisher is not up to it

I love the way he changes the tense he speaks with... Makes me happy.

"Our season was really positive when you consider that early on we lost Jarrad Waite, Andrew Walker doesn't play much"

He still makes sense to me!

Edit;

Oh Oh! The rhetorical questions! They're great, aren't they?

"Just on that, if you can actually reduce the opposition's score do you need to kick as many goals? So that will be the other task for the team."

Good read. Washed with nostalgia at his words:

We haven't played games here for a while, but I can still stand out in the middle of the ground and almost hear the floorboards of the old stand getting pounded by supporters with the whole thing almost shaking.

Those were great times...

Yes Ratts; they sure were.

I love how he speaks of the many possiblities that surround our club structure wise as opposed to the old norm. It's exciting.

Thank you for posting. :)
