I think that it is at the that time of year where we should discuss possible draftees and delistings. The first round of U18 champs are finished and we are half way through the second round, and already draftees are being identified.

This year we should possibly only use 3 picks with a weakened draft, unless we trade for an earlier pick. I still think that we should look to possibly get 2 mids, inside and out, and maybe 1 key position players.

PS. Could the Mods possibly make this thread a sticky?

Boards have been told to keep stickys to a minimum. We might look at stickying it later in the year when there is more interest.

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

Far too early IMO. You could argue that Harding might be on the chopping board, but he could have 2-3 good games in the next 2-3 weeks. Rounds 18-22 would probably be better.

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

We need more class and speed in the middle - the teams we have struggled against have greater depth and class through the center of the ground - more midfielders please :)

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

I would use 5 picks. 2 mids 1 kpp and a ruck. And a spare just in case with our first 4 picks we can't get those players or something like that.

I like the look of Kane Lucas!

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

kane lucas wont be there, hopefully koby stevens will be there though, cant see that happening either however.

5 picks is too many IMO. The depth is much less this year because of the change in draft age eligibility. A rookie or two might also need upgrading.

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

I guess it's a bit hard to tell until we know which players are cut at the end of the year. For instance, if it comes down to a choice of cutting one of say, Hawksley or Tyler, I would imagine it would then affect who we would pick up in the draft. The same goes, if we were to elevate Tippett or Murray onto the senior list at the end of the year (reducing the need to pick up a ruck).

Looking at the list, it's hard to know how many places we'll have available come draft time. I believe the minimum requirement is three. If we continue to play well, even that might be a stretch for us to achieve. If we have players who drop off, or if Voss decides to make some harsh decisions on mid-range and older players, then we could have more. But it's pretty hard to predict at this stage.

Personally, I still think we need to be drafting some quality midfielders. Although we drafted the likes of Redden, Banfield and King (who are yet to come in to the side) who offer some midfield class and pace, I'd still like to see the number of these types of players increase. Perhaps even a player who has the capacity to play as a small forward in his early years.

Despite our injury "crisis", I think we're probably covered for key position players and even for rucks, if we promote Tippett and possibly Murray (if he proves to be any good). I also think teams that have exceptional midfields are more likely to be able to get away with a few injuries (or deficiencies) in the ruck and key positions, so on this basis, I'd make the midfield and small/medium forwards our priority.

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

We still have an inssue with our small forwards...we should look into this.

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

Yeah I like the idea of a small forward/midfielder with our first pick. Small forwards are known to be big sliders come draft day and with our need for pace and goal kickers I think we could nab something exciting. Jetta's someone I'd be looking at especialy as i do not think we'll be getting a early first pick (hopefully).

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

I hate the idea of getting a small forward with out first pick. Most of the better ones are failed midfielders anyway.

Why waste a first rounder on that?

Agreed. Teams are going to burn themselves if they are too focused on finding the next Cyril. He is a one in a million.

Versatility is so important these days.

First pick... best available. :thumbsu:

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

Every year up until this year I have agreed with the best available no matter what, but this year if the best available happens to be a ruckmen do we take him? I'd be happy for the club to go best available with our first pick as long as it is not a ruckman.

An extra ruckman would be pretty handy right now ! I agree but I feel that in a lot of instances there are a number of variations on the 'best available' theory i.e two similiarily rated but entirely different players (Key Back/Midfielder). So maybe best available in the first instance with the second guiding thought behind the selection as to how best complement the current list.

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

Yeah i will always back what the Lions go for in the draft because they undoubtedly know a lot more than an average big footy poster like myself.

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

Christensen could be a good target for us. An indiginous player who could start off as a small forward then move into the midfield as he increases fitness. Supposedly he is very talented although on the short side 176cm? and could slide because of his height. Would probably be a first rounder.

Allen Christensen: Prolific ball-winning midfielder who hurts opposition teams on the scoreboard. Wins plenty of contested possessions and is extremely clever around the goals. Best-on-ground for the Geelong Falcons in the opening three rounds of the TAC Cup.

Another player who could be a potential target may be Mat Panos, a CHF/CHB prospect who is a good mark, good skills and has good pace. Possibly a late prospect although he has been named in best for champs each game so far, overlooked last year as a bottom ager.

I agree that Koby Stevens and Kane Lucas would be great pick ups, especially Lucas who has great skills. Think that they both will be picked up earlier than our pick, although Lucas may slide.

Mate if the lions don't need a ruckman than it won't be our best available.

Yep mate Lucas will do a Rich almost. He will do a Rich in the way that he will fall to the Lions but he won't go at pick 7. He will go at pick 16:D

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

These days though 176cm would be enough to automatically rule someone out from the first round and a half, and is often enough to rule someone completely out of an AFL career (unfortunately).

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

If I understand the rules correctly we cannot rookie Joel Tippett again. I would elevate him, on what I have seen here and other media. A KPP would have to be pretty good to go past JT, IMO.

I think Hanley, Dzufer and Tippett are the third year rookies that we either have to promote or delist. Garner's a second year, and Smith is a first year. Not sure if I missed anyone and I may have gotten people wrong.

Hanley is in his second year. After this year he can be retained for a third.

Smith is gone.

Murray and Spackman are both first year rookies.

why not? what if jack fitzpatrick slides than all of a sudden he wont be best available? and nathan vardy is automatically not best available either?

also, aside from the fact that kane lucas won't slip to 16, what good would it do us anyway? we will be picking well before then.

Re: Brisbane Draft Discussion

Drafting a ruckman is not a quick fix for the present problem and the emergence of Clark in that role helps a lot....Charman's injury situation is a bit of a wild card/worry as he gets older.

Elevation of Tippett or Murray seems to be the way to go if warranted - I think both can stay as rookies for another year.

Best available has served us well even including Wood but right now I hope the best available is a mid.
