Reality is that plenty of people with a full tertiary education and a decade of work experience probably have no hope of ever earning anywhere near what even an average AFL player earns annually.

We place so much emphasis on education and qualifications in the job market, yet many of the country's highest domestic-based earners are for all intents and purposes overgrown school children kicking a ball around for our enjoyment.

It's a bizarre world we live in.

Hatlett on huge money too, Theres quite a few overpaid players at Port, hence why they couldnt get involved in any player trades. To trade them theýd probably need to pay some of their wages, which defeats the purpose of freeing up cap.

I cant imagine there was any way imaginable they could have landed Gibbs. Even if he was uncontracted!

This is exactly what happened, and it wasnt only his mrs wanting them to move

Carlton knew the circumstances and knew that Gibbs was happy in Melbourne which allowed them to play as hard as they did on the trade

There is that one choice that Bryce could make, if his personal issues are really hitting home. Not play AFL. Leave his contract behind and look after more important things.

If things are really at the level where your life is getting damaged and degraded because of an AFL contract requiring you to live in Melbourne ... then just say thanks, I'm done. We'll see, and I hope he makes the right decisions for him and his family ... but it's not like he is serving a sentence in a prison and Carlton won't let him out. He can walk away whenever he wants.

The talk about the Power not having salary cap room is another furphy imo. Drop your contract down to a rate they could afford and move ... unless it doesn't mean as much as the higher level of pay you have become accustomed to.

Not trying to whale on the BG here, but to say he was "let down" by Carlton OR Adelaide is a real stretch imo.

The bottom line, due to circumstance the crows got a fair deal for dangerfeild, the crows didn't offer a fair deal for Gibbs.

The crows offered what they considered to be fair for Gibbs - which the blues as is their right knocked back as they wanted more value than Dangerfield.

Pick 13 and Lyons is the bottom value for Gibbs. We wanted two first rounders which would have been late first rounders. We weren't asking for two picks inside the top 10, both picks were outside.

You get a player for bottom value when

Player has off field problems/issues and needs to go (mental or behavioral)
Player has a serious injury
Player has had a sustained drop in form
Player has personality traits that are concerning
Player is out of contract
Player is not valued at his club

A Players value increases when

Player is 27 years or under
Player demonstrates good form
Player is fit, healthy and passes a medical test and doesn't have a long history of injuries
Value increases for every year under contract
Player has leadership qualities on and off the field
Player is highly valued by his club

Gibbs ticks all the boxes to increase in value and none of the ones to decrease. He was not strong on leaving. Losing Gibbs would have caused significant short term damage that could equal long term damage. He's valuable to our rebuild. Crows can not force us to sell.

As I said, Hawks and Cats happy to travel without round one picks for a while, they operate pretty well from what I have seen, some clubs take the next step, others done. Dogs sure made a few sacrifices to get there with the players they lose and the whole Boyd thing.

Adelaide did not evaluate Gibbs well. Wouldn't want them selling your house, just give it away.

Carlton didn't want to let him go but didn't want to appear insensitive to his wishes so they asked for a price they knew we would be unwilling to pay.

That's their right, he was contracted but to suggest Adelaide "didn't offer anything decent" is just wrong, we offered what we (and by many reports, what most industry professionals) felt was a fair deal.

They refused it and that's fine, again, it's their right to hold him to his contract.

When you guarantee him that you will get him to Adelaide and your best offer is Pick 13 and no more (swapping future 2nd to future 3rd is a 2-4 pick upgrade), Adelaide did do wrong by Gibbs.

You wanted to pay the price a player that has 1 more year on contract get (his current club would fear FA the next year).
You thought you can take advantage of the situation and it back fired.

The simple fact that had Bryce walked out as a FA, Carlton would have received better compensation than what Adelaide offers tells you everything you need to know about the situation. Carlton were not going to be punished for having Gibbs with 3 years of a 5 year front loaded contract.

Pick 13 and Lyons (who's going to a damn good player) should've been enough. I guess we'll wait and see. My feeling is that Carlton have recognised their mistakes in offloading the likes of Betts and Jacobs to us, and didn't want to be perceived as poor negotiators - basically saving face.

That is not true either. Ross Gibbs basically said that Adelaide have come to him several times. And you don't think that his ex manager and now your list manager there wasn't conversations there?

It may be a case of you were not expecting him to say yes, but the door was always there for him to come knocking at any time. So technically, he approached Crows is like me walking into Myre to buy something and then a salesperson asks can I help you and me saying the "salesperson approached me".

His old man absolutely hates Port through the SANFL old days. Salary cap or not, he wouldnt ever play for the club. Plus we've got Aaron Young. Only enough space for 1 man bun in the salary cap.

I don't think many understand the genuine hatred from some between Adelaide and Port that goes back generations.

Yeah he we get to deal with his bitterness at least 3 times a week. With his sons playing nearly 600 games between them you would think he would have mellowed. Nope if anything, the angry old fella hates us even more.

I seem to remember an interview with him years ago while his sons were playing at Port, he was asked if he now follows port. He essentially said he still hates port and just follows his sons and hopes they do well.
