Burgatron's Carlton Picks

http://www.afl.com.au/News/NEWSARTICLE/tabid/208/Default.aspx?newsId=70169

6 – CARLTON – CHRIS YARRAN
Swan Districts, WA, Medium forward, December 19, 1990, 180.3cm, 83.3kg
(Draft range: 3-13)

The intrigue continues at No.6. The Blues have been strongly linked to Hartlett and Hurley, but there are no guarantees they will still be there, with Rich, Hill, Ziebell and Trengove also in Carlton's mix. There is a school of thought the Blues will select Yarran if available regardless of who slips through to 6. He could be taken at No. 3 by Fremantle or slide through to No.12 (Sydney Swans). Some recruiters believe Yarran is the most talented player in this year's draft and considering Carlton's small/mid-sized forward options need bolstering, he fits 'best available' and 'needs'.

40 – CARLTON – WILL YOUNG
North Ballarat, VIC, Tall forward, August 3, 1990, 191.6cm, 83.2kg
(Draft range: 29-not selected)

Recruiters are split on Young. Some believe he is a top-30 pick, but others aren't convinced he will be selected at all. The general consensus is that he will be taken because of his size and his ability up forward. In recent days, he has been strongly aligned to the Sydney Swans at No.30, with Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs also in contention. The Blues will also keep watch on him as they look to add to their forward stocks. O'Keefe and Motlop will also be right in the mix for the Blues.

65 – CARLTON – BRAD MANGAN
Murray Bushrangers, VIC, Medium forward, April 27, 1991, 186.7cm, 87kg
(Draft range: 22-80)

Mangan's draft prospects are a matter of considerable debate. Some recruiters believe he has shot up into the top 30, while others say he could be claimed in the last 10 picks. Mangan has even been mooted as a Port Adelaide smoky at No.22 or No.42, with Collingwood also keen. Carlton is also a strong tip and it would not surprise if the Blues took him at No.40. Hawthorn is also believed to have sounded him out. Pearce, Shiels and Zach Sengstock are others who have been linked late with Carlton.

80 – CARLTON – ROBIN NAHAS
Port Melbourne, VIC, Small forward/midfielder, November 10, 1987, 174cm, 63kg
(Draft range: 65-not selected)

Nahas looms as a late pick after a fine year with Port Melbourne in the VFL. He has been closely linked with Carlton late in the draft, with the Blues looking to add some nip in attack. If Carlton overlooks him, otherwise expect him to become a rookie

85 – CARLTON – PASS

Like Port Adelaide, don't expect Carlton to use the last pick in this year's NAB AFL Draft, as it has former Demon Chris Johnson ready to become a Blue. Johnson didn't nominate for this meeting, meaning he is almost certain to join Carlton. The only twist could be if West Coast or Fremantle passes on their final selections, hoping to lure the Western Australian home. But Johnson has firmly indicated he wants to remain in Victoria and start his new life at Carlton.

That's because he think Hurley will go to Essendon. I wonder which recruiting manager ranks Hurley as top 2 in the draft....

Don't know anything about Will Young....or Brad Mangan....

I'll be more than happy if that happens but just as happy with any in his top 10 really.

I would not be at all disappointed with Yarran. He fits our needs and seems like he could only get better with increased fitness. The ceiling is huge with Yarran.

Interesting to note he has us taking Robin Nahas either in this draft or as a rookie...

80 – CARLTON – ROBIN NAHAS
Port Melbourne, VIC, Small forward/midfielder, November 10, 1987, 174cm, 63kg
(Draft range: 65-not selected)

Also, Tom Rockliff...seems he could last to our 2nd/3rd selection if that is anything to go by. There's something about him i really like and would like to see him in a Carlton jumper.

Someone with a pick outside the top two. I will guarentee whoever Essendon picks, they will have ranked them as the best in the draft. Patrick Ryder as an example.

He Almost makes me think Carlton are looking at recruiting a whole new forward division!

It's a massive weakness and i really hope they do look at recruiting several ranging forward types from, talls, smalls, marking types, speedsters, etc.

Very interesting read. Just reading the small snippets of the Carlton picks, O'Keeffe, Motlop, Pearce, Shiels, Sengstock are players he says we seem to be interested in.

A few surprising slides for me, players such as:

Rhys O'Keeffe at 50
Paul Cahill at 78
Ben Bucovaz at 72
Tom Hill at 68
Michael Walters at 35

then Michael Still, Charlie Sharples and Chris Hall all not even drafted.

Agree. Everyone seems to think it's the big key position players that are needed for carlton to have a good forward line. Whilst it's important to have them, players like Betts, Walker, Yarran and Nahas rotating through there would make it a very dangerous forward line capable of kicking many goals.

According to Burgan, these are the players that he has mentioned are linked to Carlton, are a chance to go to Carlton or wont get past Carlton's next pick:

Hartlett
Hurley
Yarran
Hill
Rich
Luke Shuey
Rhys O'Keefe
Steven Motlop
Clancee Pearce
Liam Shiels
Zach Sengstock
Rohan Bail
Robin Nahas
Chris Johnson

Wouldn't mind Cornelius at 40.

I'm a bit concerned about Yarran. He just doesn't do enough. Ziebell would be a much better option.

We must select Rich if he falls to six. I rate Hartlett and Hurley, but would stay clear of Yarran

Re: Burgatron's Carlton Picks

If recruiters wheren't so obsessed with how tall players are, Nahas would've been selected when he was 17. He had a good a national championship that year playing on the wing for Vic Metro racking up over 30 touches in two of the games. It seems to be the pattern now that if you're 179cms and under, you need to play state football before recruiters will risk their job on you. Matt Campbell is another example.

LOL, love your sig Banga, very good !! :D

Just a question, What are the Burgen's credentials for doing a mock draft ??
Does he go around and watch a lot of under 18's and such or is he just an investigative reporter that sits in an office and makes a lot of phone calls to clubs recruiting departments ??

I just seem to get the feeling it is more of the latter and not much of the former. Just my thoughts anyway!!

picking up 30 touches against kids is a bit different to doing it against Afl players, the issue is his weight, but he has developed well at port melbourne in the past few seasons..so hopefully we pick him up late, would be handy!

What dont you like about Yarran? I think he's the most gifted footballer in the draft this year. Can do amazing things with the football and has great pace. One of those players that can turn a game in the space of 5 minutes. Could be a ready made star once he gets into the AFL system.

I guess living in Toorak makes it hard to see Yarran live.

Please explain what Yarran should do more to improve? Does he not kick enough goals in the WAFL against men? Does he not set up enough goals in the WAFL against MEN?

Does he not play a highly important role in getting the Swans into the WAFL finals? Is he not quick enough for you?

Have you ever seen Yarran play? Do you find it strange there are a number of people that have a heap of information, that rate Yarran in their top 6? Miss Emma "Everyone's Man Crush" Q has him rated as the second best player.

So please go ahead and explain where did Yarran go wrong?

Stoked to hear that we are interested, I just hope Port don't nab him 2 picks ahead of us, they already have 2!

I would imagine that our interest in Motlop will increase if Yarran is not available at 6.

I don't think I will get my wish of Jackon wearing navy Blue, but I would still much rather Hurley or Ziebell at 6 and Motlop with 40 or 65.
