how shit would it be if he joins another club as a DFA and has a breakout year?

Not really bothered tbh. Probably his only chance of forging an AFL career at the moment.

As much as I love Butch....it's over guys
Too many chances...too many floors....to many missed opportunitities
I'd rather pick up a #89 pick an chance getting a gem than spend another year of wasted effort

Out to stud for Butch

the thing I agree with Butcher optimists on is that he probably didn't get enough chances here at afl level.

I get the point Butcher optimists make about Butcher's early goals/game stats and the long shallow learning curve of KPFs. thing is the KPFs that fail never turn the curve upwards, so the point is a bit moot.

and the thing I agree with Butcher pessimists on is that those times in recent seasons when he hasn't taken his chances, he looks out of place at AFL level as well as being unable to reliably execute one particular core skill that's a fundamental requirement of the job. our field and set shot kicking has been bad enough this year.

if it was as simple as him learning to kick set shots sure it would have been fixed or at least mitigated a little by routine and or technique coaching. there are multiple layers of issues here including chronic injuries and confidence and who knows what else. the whole set isn't likely to be fixed at this stage, not unless he wants a significant pay cut and to go to the rookie list or something to buy another season at it.

KTs comment re money being tight in all areas is likely a signal to members, supporters to expect some 'disappointments' at list changes time.

Highly unlikely....has the heart of a Lion but the skills of country B grader
Have to disagree.
Potentially he is our best KPF but his kicking has let him down. The gap between his best and worse is way bigger than it should be but his best is very good.

EDIT: Before too many jump in boots and all, think of Schulz and Butcher with their kicking ability reversed.

Yes but can probably identify at least one player in every team that has had challenges. chronic injuries, confidence issues etc but they have underlying skill and eventually star at lower levels and get their chance
If a player consistently misses goals from 10-20 metres at SANFL including out on the full I don't think that player deserves anything

If we can't sign players because we are over the cap then that's just disgusting work by the club.

slight over-reaction IMO. most years with trades & FA there's a balance between who arrives and leaves

last year basically +ryder, -newton... on top of a few years of improved performance and of not losing young stars, says we probably increased our spend. this year +????, -Kane Cornes, so IMO KT means that if we want to make a decent trade, we need to make 'room to move'.

Given front page win-win trades like Hartlett for Carlisle are rare, strong 'movement' out of our mid-tier seems likely to free up $: Moore, Butch, O'Shea, Mitchell, Young (best trade value IMO). Krak stays rookie. Logan retires. PStew 'encouraged' to retire. Lowball on Schulz and Redden.

simplistically, it's bloody Supercoach: replace a few mid tier price players of modest output with a mix of cheap draftees and - trade/FA in a star if you can afford to or trade in someone you hope will be a 'bolter' if you can't. the risk is you gut 'depth' on the hope of an injury free run from a star or on the promise of a 'bolter'. I just happen to think Butch will be caught up by his lack of progress, that we want to invest the $ elsewhere.

"Too many chances" is a new one.

My big hope is that Butch has a ridiculous deal so we can free up some money.

When he signed at the end of 2011 it was reported as a 4-year deal, but the club has him down as re-signing with Carlile, Trengove and Moore at the end of 2013.

Either way, I'm not sure he'd be on the sort of money he was in 2012.

"Too many chances" is taking the piss at a pretty high level.

So if the Schulz contract negotiations do fall over and he goes to Freo or Brisbane as Rucci suggests, does Butch survive?

Be silly not to rookie him. I mean how many other options at rookie list spots do we have we couldn't spare a spot for butch?

Is there a better key forward option in the sanfl ready to come in? If you anwser yes you probably should be taken out and shot.

Good question Ford. I agree with the suggestion that we could Rookie List Butcher. However he will be out of contract at the end of the season and if he decides to go we will not get that chance.

As for Schultz I think we need to make some contingency plans because he does not look to have more than a couple of years in him. On current form I cannot see anyone offering him big dollars. Despite Rucci my gut feeling is that Schulz will stay.

At one stage it was rumoured that Mason Shaw may return to WA. I have not heard any more on that one.

If the Rooch is correct we are paying 105% of our salary cap this year!!
You may get what you deserve BUT you certainly don't get what you pay.

KT made it sound as if we may have front loaded some contracts. We keep getting linked to players, that also must mean we will have room next year.

The on field spending will not be an issue for mine, however the off field spending may be the opposite.

I remember hearing at the time it was 4 years, 400k a year in 2011 - which at the time was unders as carlton was circling pretty hard and his projected output was through the roof. This year was a 1 year contract from memory ? I'd imagine it would be a pittance - The win for butch last contract was staying on the list....

To rookie list Butcher we have to delist him and he enters the draft pool. If we were to lose Schulz and decide we might like to keep Butcher would we risk delisting him and waiting for 80 picks (say) over National, Pre-season and early rookie drafts to select him? And what if there was a young player in the first round of the rookie draft we loved?

No.
Would pick up Majak Daw as a DFA before allowing Butch to stay on the list. Plus Butch would need to want to stay and I can't see that he will be picked up by someone if we delist him. It hasn't and obviously won't work here for him. We need unpredictable players off our list. Would also trade Pittard.

Majak Daw? Is he any better than Butch?
