It's actually amazing he took the job on. Definitely chose the harder task. Yze and Mitchell have premiership cores to guide kids.
Club loyalty I suppose.
North was the club that gave him the break into the VFL.
I think he had some personal hardship that he’s always been thankful to the club for supporting him in .

I just want to illustrate something.

Here's a thread on the Hawthorn board from the first week of May 2006, in Clarkson's second year as Hawthorn head coach. It was complaining about Clarkson selecting/leaving players on the ground who were getting smashed, in games where they were getting smashed

Tell me if you see some parallels here.

(PS BigFooty Mods/Admins - yes, I'm directly quoting posts from another team's board here. The posts are from 2006. Please don't infract me for this!)

Two years later in 2008 they won their first of four flags under Clarkson.

His methods work. There's pain in the early days as he seeks to build his system, his philosophy, and his ideology into the young kids.

.

(PS check out the actual nostradamus post in that thread ;) It's the entire reason I remembered those posts from disgruntled Hawthorn fanssome 18~ years later haha)

Lol

In 2006 i remember one of our passionate Hawks mates going off his rocker screaming at Ian Dicker from the top Level of Docklands in a game against us. I think they even had a mantra for that season of being a “paid up and passionate member” and he was telling Dicker to stick it.

It was also an awful game where Laidley was just flooding.

Exactly, in what parallel universe did anyone have us returning any different outcome down at the cattery than 10 goals??

Its been obvious all week , the bookies quoted pretty much that as the line was 58.5pts, yet everyone is outraged.

….ummm yes

We had one vocal screaming from the BF roof top we were going to win

We won’t be sacking him.

Unfortunately, he’s not the god we thought he was.

Team selection, lack of noticeable game plan and lack of game day moves.

He’s tracking at a 2/10 so far.

Clarko has been a disappointment. Not saying he won’t or can’t turn it around, but he hasn’t done much to date on field.

It’s not like he was able to get TT back on track or anything. What a waste that was.

Off field, he’s probably been good for morale, despite the negative attention he has brought to us.
Correct - we won't be sacking Clarko - we can't afford to financially (or non financially) after what we have been through in the past 5 years.

'Bye bye Clarko' to me refers to Clarko 'sacking' us ie if things continue as they are through to the bye next year there will be a carefully orchestrated hand over to Patch or Lynch with Clarko staying on as consultant through to the end of the year to ensure there is a smooth transition.

I am not saying that will happen - Clarko will fight tooth and nail to get this team performing better next year - but there is no chance he will continue to coach into a 4th and 5th year if he feels he can't get improvement in the team and we are still languishing in the bottom 2.

As our neighbours to the east would say, what a duckhead

Clarkson isn't the mahdi, messiah or saviour. He will not just flick on the magic switch and everything falls in line.

Clarkson will bring a sense of stabiliyt and professionalism.

Clarkson will also implement a blueprint for the type of people we need at the club.

Clarkson's prescence affects not just the playerse about also recruitment, development and management.
Any explanation for signing D Stephens on a 4 year deal?

Not bad Chad but he'd given tangible glimpses of hope by beating a grand finalist in his 1st year. Apart from hope and patience, we haven't seen that "belief" style win under him as yet.

He also lost to Port to the tune of 117 points (still the biggest win and highest score in Ports history) in his 1st year. I wonder the levels of belief on the Hawks BF board were that week 🤔

Yes, i can explain. Stephens is a very useful link up player that we don't have too many of. Also he just at an age where he's getting into his prime.
getting into his prime ?
Is this when goes from being a kitten into a cat ?

Percentage depends on what both teams score, given we couldn't kick 10 goals in many games last year the oppo dont have to score a lot for poor percentage our way, so say a 10 goal oppo versus 4 goal us ( 40%) is worse percentage than 10 goals versus 20. ( 50%) and that not even taking into account our first 5 games have been against 5 of the top 7 teams with the only one out being Brisbane that played off in last years GF.
Yes I understand math..... For north to have a 10 goal avg losing margin with 71% = oppos avg score had to be over 200....

didn't sheedy and cameron get that with GWS...? yet we can't afford that with clarkson? if you go too hard too early on the margin of games the coach will just try and be competitive but not actually win, and we'll just be an 'honourable loss' team.

plus norths % last year was 71%, that's not a 10 goal average losing margin....
... and let's not forget that Damien Hardwick didn't turn Richmond around in one or two seasons either. He endured a lot of losses over a few seasons and was on the verge of the sack when Richmond's fortunes finally began to change. He suddenly transformed from a feather duster into being regarded as the ****-of-the-roost among the AFL coaches.

As I recall they got belted by over 100 points in the last game of 2016 by Sydney, to follow up three straight EF defeats. Look at him now.

Similarly Melbourne had a 93 points loss and four 60+ point losses (including one by an injury riddled GWS who were still a bottom side at the time) in Paul Roos's first year of coaching in 2014. A lot of people questioning whether the guy who was suppose to be a saviour could really help this 'lost cause'

I wonder if Clarko is a “Ross the Boss “ type that he’s a control freak & puts his nose in everything in the whole footy club or is a more modern coach who empowers his assistant coaches…

Love Clarko for all he did for us but he seems cooked. Racism saga has smashed him.
Winning that game last year to lose the greatest player West Coast will ever have was beyond crazy.
