Matty Davies - Could be anything as a player always has plenty of time, space and is highy skilled - Just needs to work harder than ever on the track.

A surprise packet may be Jed Burgess - can get a heap of the footy but needs to improve on 1 grabbing below his knees. - Has struggled to balance life between owning a bar and committing himself to footy.

Johnny Mai could be anything - But where is his head today??

Trent Morpeth will be totally honest in his quest to play seniors, but his skill level will let him down.

As is the case with the famous scribe - He will be running rings around the blokes at training at the moment - but as we know sometimes being superfit doesn't mean you can get it and use it....

I'd expect 4 or 5 OT guys to start in the senior line-up in round one. Mind you there are another couple of not-so-recently ex-OTs who might also slot in, so it could be more. Injuries will probably determine whether any others will join them.

I'll return the favour (as in previous posts) and wish the T's all the best, as I hear there's plenty of young lads working hard and looking to fill whatever gaps have opened up from last season's senior sides.

Oh, and I've been pleasantly surprised that there are a few Reds fellas who I'm finding it very hard to run rings around on the pre-season running drills. Guess I'd better focus on getting the leather and using it ASAP, eh?

As well as working on getting the leather and using it, you should also perhaps start working on a few speeches, given your predecessor was a speechwriter by trade.

However, that said, while the speeches were well written and delivered with a pleasant enough speaking voice, I'm still struggling to find the relevance the 19th Century French thinker Alexis de Tocqueville, American agricultural scientist and Noble laureate Norman Borlaug, and the Flaming Lips have with C-Grade football.

Best to perhaps keep it a little more simple...

I'm sure Scribes messages will be most entertaining given his writing last year. I'm also confident they will be more sophisticated than one of his newly appointed opposing coaches. This guy is no stranger to reds fans after being sent off in the 1st semi and then reported for striking thus missing the Grand Final. Not that his presence would have made any difference to that result! (red doesn't think he was worh 15 goals)

Is this the sort of ecample you would want set? Not exactly the best foundation to lay for a coaching career, here is an exerpt of round 1:

Dont know about the rest of you but it seems typical of the week-willed reds to be complaining about something that happened last year! Hopefully these new recruits can put a bit of lead in the red's pencils, cause the team i saw last year were scared of the hard ball.

Anthony does have one more game out, so he will suit up in round 2. Might drop that OT's influence back to 3 or 4 then - again this is only a very early "guesstimate".

Now that's something I can agree with, with some authority.

Last year the Reds' ball-looker-afterer kept supplying match balls that were pumped up beyond belief. They were like rocks.

If the Reds were scared of those balls, it was with good reason. One good kick and it could have gone off like a bomb. No doubt they didn't want any of their guys carried off with blood spurting from what little shreds of meat were left below the knee.

In fact one memorable match I was at, when SBMT beat them by 100-ish, both captains grovelled to the umpires at half time requesting some air be let out of the ball, as it hurt to kick and was pretty uncontrollable in the wind.

Definitely afraid of the hard ball. I would be too.

For the monders to be a serious threat they needed to recruit well in the big-man department. You can't win premierships with one ruckman [especially one in his mid thirties] and and undersized goal-to-goal line.

DG Man continues to avoid this thread, he ran D1 last year, it is now clear he has a multiple personality and Geeves is no longer is in his persona. Either that or he is shutting up. Good to hear from OC 37 though.

Not sure if the names can be revealed at this stage.

Hi KB,

I still have a read every few days. I just dont have much to say. I will be at all 18 games this year (hopefully 20 or 21!), but until season starts i do not head down to the club. I officially jump on the bandwaggon Rd. 1.
Geeves has spent the summer with his uncle in Italy and will not be back for another few weeks. I will send him down to a few preseason training runs and hope to gain a little insight then.
Have been interested to read some of the possible ins and outs at OC for 2007, but as yet cannot add to or confirm any of these.
A bit like you KB, am just looking for my club to firstly improve and be competitive in C-Grade. Anything more than than this would be a bonus. I do not know much about any of the clubs bar Rupo, Old Camberwell and ourselves. So will need to watch a bit of footy before i get my head aroung C Grade 07.
Will start up a tipping comp if people are interested. I know OC37, Hansie, yourself (and hopefully Sandra Sully) will be takers!

I would estimate at three would be on line for senior selection early on as flanker pretty keen on them. Understand a few will bob up at Parkdale as well! They also tell me a real good one gone Balwyn way to play ammos.

As yet I haven't seen any Trinity players at Parkdale training. Just a couple of local school players coming back to play with mates. All under 23. Halved the average age at training to 37.

Love to hear from the Reds or Ormond on how big the jump to "C" grade is. The thread in D1 mentioned Reds and Ormond were way ahead of other sides in 2005, both sides performed OK in 2006 but was Reds below expectations? OC was in the end the standout last year while we come from the heavans to pinch promotion. D1 was very even.

I will attempt to answer that for you KB. In 2005 Reds where by far the best side in D grade and won the flag by 15 goals - making Ormond look second rate at best. Ormond where IMO very reliant on Mick Miller and Simon Keleher. They had 2 or 3 key position players that (again IMO) where rather keen on themselves and played for personal joy as opposed to team success.

Having also seem Uni Black dominate D grade in 2004 - then C grade in 2005 I would rank the past three D grade premiers in this order:

1) Old Carey 2006- Grand Final performance was extremely impressive - very big and hard when it needed to be - and no one could deny Steve Collins being the most dominant player in D grade over the past few years (perhaps with the exception of team mate Al Parton).

2) University Blacks 2004 undefeated and unbeatable that year (and the next year too from memory) but probably had a softer run against up and coming Reds and Banyule who where loaded with older blokes- from all reports added significantly to the team in 2005 that went back to back in C grade.

3) Fitzroy Reds 2005 - plenty of stars in this team BUT I firmly believe would not have beaten OC last year or Blacks in 2004. Someone could tell me if they believed Reds where stronger in 06 than 05- i.e. would the 05 team have beaten the 06 team??

Momentum is the key to a club rising up the grades and history if full of sides getting on a roll and bursting through D grade and C grade and into B and A:

Mazenod early to mid '90's
Old Ivanhoe mid '90
St Kevin's late 90's
Old Essendon late '90s (not quite to A yet but surely not far away)


And I am sure I have missed a few.

KB, the point being, that once a club can develop the winning culture and excitement associated with success and promotion then the rise up the grades will almost certainly follow. The absolute beauty about ammo football is that you can play against a team (and enjoy and beer or 3 post match) one year and then watch their progress with great interest (or great jealously as will be the case with Rupo in 2007) for the next years to come.

As I know you from last year I hope this has been of some interest to you. If Rupo can pick up by about 10% - Ugly could almost certainly guarantee you a spot in the September action for this year. And that would be a great effort.

In regards to the Reds performance in 2006, it was very similiar to our year in 2002. After going thru undefeated in 2001 in D3, we struggled to gain our feat in D2. Survival in the higher grade was a priority. We made it, laid the foundation and went on to defeat the Peninsula (Bottom) Pirates in the 2003 D2 grand final. I would like to hope this scenario will be repeated in 2007.

From the numerous posts in the last month or so relating to the Reds, things sound very promising at the BSO. With no disrespect to the likes of Peter Hille, Burgs et al, the best thing the Reds could have done was to get some new people to the club. The only negative I have found at the Reds is a perception of cliqueness, but then that is found at all footy clubs.

I certainly enjoyed playing against the Reds in 2005 - from the outdside I thought the place was run better than most other clubs at "our" level. Shows what can be done with a committee of go getters.

Having viewed the 2006 C Section GF on DVD, does this give you an ability to assess how OC & Rupo will stack up in 2007 in C Section?
