Cal Twomey's 2017 Phantom Draft

No one is going to select Kelly and move him and his, soon to be, family of 5 anywhere across the Island, i see the Eagles selecting him with pick 37.

So that's one mid, I would also be supprised if they dont select at least one other inside 30 though!

Some clubs will as there isn't huge depth in outside mids in this draft, Geelong in particular who are in a flag window are probably happy to have kelly for 1-2 years even if it means he requests a trade when his first contract is up. WCE will probably have to take him at 21 if they want him. Ryan is the one they can let through late, non WA clubs will be spooked there.

Would love Bonar/Clark/Stephenson at 10
Houlahan/Miers/Petruccelle at 30

Agree with this but reckon Twomey must have the inside word if he has Richards #10. Would much rather take a punt on Bonar/Stephenson there and use #30 on a Garner or Stoddart if he gets through.

uhhhhh..... who knew Josh Battle would go pick 35+

To be fair undersized 3rd tall fwds have a long history of sliding. While i agree we need to wait until after the draft he loses a bit of credibility suggesting the eagles will spend a top 30 pick on a ruck when they already have Naitanui Lycett and Vardy.

Closest draft in years though. Pretty much only top 3 are almost certain to go the way he has them

Richards looks the Bolter this year. Looking at some previous bolters would give you confidence. Oliver McRae and Bont. Maybe Bont wasn’t a huge bolter but from memory I think he was.
Huge bolter in the last half of the year

Hope he ha the word. That'd be a great haul. Although this year seems really rubbery for predictions. usually the top 15 or so are fairly set. this year after about 3 it gets all over the place.

he's very dangerous, don't know how Daniels is rated a better small than these two. I just feel petro has the versatility to move off half back and his pace is exciting. Doc out and Kade in his last few seasons wouldn't be surprised if they choose him over Miers

Miers is good around goal and a smart player, but he really lacks pace and overall isn’t a great athlete. Assuming that he becomes a small forward, I think that his lack of speed will lead to struggles to apply defensive pressure inside F50, clubs need that from small forwards.
Daniels on the other hand has neat skills, can kick goals, very quick but he also has demonstrated ability to do the defensive stuff, he can also take a decent mark for a guy of his size. Haven’t read this comparison as yet but I could see him playing a Paul Puopolo type role for a team.
I would be drafting Daniels before Miers (just my two cents worth)

Cal Twomey has been going on about Patrick Naish being a #10-#15 selection all year when most people even here said after #20

Now he has him at #27 bid on by GWS , With all the Richmond people at GWS in Campbell ,Cameron etc cant see them making their former club match with them having no chance to get him.

Some of the stuff on his phantom dont make sense

I think Richmond will be lucky if he goes thst late. As you said he’s rated higher than 27 so unless there’s a couple of handshake agreements in place I doubt he gets that far.

Twomey thinks it's possible for Stephenson to fall to Tigers at Pick 17. To me that sounds absurd, but, it isn't much of a stretch from there to say that he might fall 2 more picks and land at Gold Coast with pick 19.
I think it's highly unlikely he'll be taken that late, but if he does end up at Gold Coast after all this Pick 2 for Weller stuff, I'm calling 'funny buggers' on the AFL...

West Coast at 21 are the only team I can see bidding on him before 25.

His Q&A on the AFL website he said he wasn't very confident about anything this year so I wouldn't read too much into any of this past about pick 20

Sure, but most of those picks he 'missed' were taken within 1-2 spots of where he predicted. The only ones well out were SPP and Graham - and while SPP clearly deserved to be selected earlier, as he was, so was Graham - so it's hard to fault his judgement of talent and his inside info regarding club rankings.
Yeah it's a good guide as to the range they'll go, but not necessarily the clubs, so as I said, there's no need to get all in a tizzy about who he has specifically going to your club, because it probably won't happen.

As for his "judgement of talent", this is a phantom draft, so it's about predicting where they'll all go and to do that he's asking all the clubs who will go where and they'd be telling them the ranges they're likely to go in, so this isn't his rankings, it's where he's being told the clubs generally rank them and where they're telling him they'll go.

His phantom is where is thinks they will go, his form guide where he puts naish higher is his personal rankings.

Yeah the variations in some of the phantoms is telling me there’s not many certainties.

He got the first 7 right last year, but then missed with 18 of the next 23, so I wouldn't go getting my knickers in a twist over who he has going to your club if it's at a pick after about 7 again this year. Lottery after that.

I had a look back and about 6 or 7 late phantoms I was following at the time all had the exact same top 7 phantom on the final day(s). This year is looking much more unknown.
