Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

Okay and lets be fair here and say Carlton are on the right track, have a good core group of players to build around and are set for the future. Chances are they won't win a flag. This is not a shot at them it is just a fact that most rebuilds don't work. Look at the Giants they have looked ready to absolutely dominate the AFL for years now and are still yet to win a flag.

Look at Adelaide they looked set in 2017 to win one or at least be well set up for the next few years, no flag.

Freo from 2012-2015 were a very good team and yet no flag.

Collingwood post 2010 have built the list again and yet no flag (possibly time for that to change)

Winning flags is bloody hard and IF the Hawks go down a full rebuild, we bottom out, hit the draft and look to blow up the entire list the chances are we won't win one. That is just how it is, criticizing the Hawks for attempting it when they had credits in the bank is stupid.
Good post.
Even with the best planning and systems implemented, premierships are elusive. All teams can reasonably do is put themselves in the best position for a crack at it.

I know a few players agents and I can tell you that Clarko wants Ben Brown and could give up and future 2021 to get him.
You've mentioned Ben Brown being on Clarksons radar a number of times. Don't know about anyone else, but I've not heard this from any other source/commentator

Suggests a light serving of BS though happy for you to back up your rumour

For the record, I've seen 8 Carlton premierships, there are plenty of Blues fans who have witnessed success.

This wasnt directed at you.

I dare say you dont post ridiculous crap to the same level as some, who are so used to not winning that they gain more joy from others not winning than they do from their own wins (primarily because they are few and far between).

Keep premiership coaches until the end of time? Parkin should still be coaching us to this day?

Point is even the super coaches over history can’t polish a turd. Barsssi at Melbourne in the 80s, Alan jeans Richmond in 92, Blight at st kilda, malthouse for Carlton etc.

Essendon supporters will tell you sheedy from around 2003 onwards was doing a similar variation of what Clarko is doing now.
All the hallmarks of an impatient Carlton supporter.

Ive heard this from a close friend of mine who is a player manager. I couldn’t care less about making up a rumour about it. It does make sense the way Clarko operates. He wants quick fixes and willing to give up valuable draft picks in doing so.

Every player has limitations though. Mitchell can win ball and distribute by hand. He's not the piece thats going to break lines, kick bullet passes inside 50 or kick the match winning goals when needed.

Maybe but give Mitchell time to get over his injury, it's not something you'll come back in 5 weeks and be fine, might take a year

At his best pre-injury, he still wasn't the player I described, he's not going to become that line breaking, goal kicking, inside 50 midfielder.

Anyway it's not meant to criticise how great he is at what he does, just that every player has relative strengths and weaknesses to others, and Mitchell is no exception.

Nothing wrong with that sort of player in fact it's the area Hawthorn have gone backwards this year- getting the ball out of the middle...what were the clearance numbers yesterday? They were abysmal because Mitchell can't spend long periods in there yet.

What Hawthorn need is some speed because JOM aside they are turtle paced in the midfield.

Strange comment

Hawthorn have won 4 flags since Carlton's last in 1995.
While Hawthorn have 13 Flags Carlton have won 8 in the same period

It was more a comment on the maturity of some posters. And how they give away their age (or mental age).

Mocking a team and supporters of that team despite their team having been a basket case for 15 years is beyond ridiculous.

Yet, about right for BF.

Interesting
If true, wonder how Jon Patton be thinking

I don't think the system allows you to bring in enough elite talent without bottoming out. We drafted elite talent then topped up, Tigers did the same.

We have brought in some very good players in the last couple of years but they're not as good as the champions who have departed.

Clarko has been blown by media and hawko supporters too long and is now not angry dwarf but ARROGANT dwarf too.
Thinks he's so good at coaching he can get Ty Zantuck to a premiership, as if! All because steward due (aka The Human Doughnut) won a flag for him in 2007?

Hawks gone from pinching all australian stars like james frawley to potatos like sam frost. Their recruiting is like when mum can't do the groceries, dad goes instead and if he sees weetbix on special he comes home with 5 boxes even though everyone in the house thinks weetbix is shit, ie: why recruit " RUNNING MAN!" tommy scully when your gameplan is to stand still and play kick to kick? they don't need tom scully. they need someone who is not a total ****ing squib. Some skills wouldn't hurt too.

Madness to think they were close to a flag after going out (straight sets!) in 2018 finals. So they top up with showponies (Chud Wingehard) and "fixeruperers" in Spud O'merea, "GENERAL!" Patton, Scully, Sam Frost, and some other crap players no one else wanted, all to complement a bunch of soon-to-be-retirees like "Burgers" burgone (solid 10 possies yesterday!) and puppola puppola. Don't get me wrong, I think chud is nice (cream!) but even then they overpaid- how is that even possible? Losing trades to Port Adelaide..? They took Timmy Toumpas and ****ing Jack Watts from Melbourne for gods sake!

On-field leadership is "bucket of shit", Pinchy Stratton wouldn't be best 22 at any club in the AFL right now.
Development rubbish. I remember when Dingley was sprouting superstars like Hodge, Sam Mitchell, Lance Franklin and J Roughead all over the park. Now their best talent is some flog named "Worpedo"(?), won the Rising Star award and now the only thing he is in contention for is the Mr. Invisible "can't see him because he's not doing shit" award for being invisible.

(also just for completeness sake hawthorn are old and their list management is shit)

Go the Dees!

Hawks success was built entirely on the draft
It's an odd thing to say about a premiership team with the fewest players acquired via the National Draft than any other premier of the past 15 years.
