Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

They will really struggle.
Unfortunately, the Hawthorn way is redundant.
The Hawks are not a go to club anymore.
But we've been told we are all wrong and are missing the genius at work who's about to surprise us all because Clarkson is 10 steps ahead of the rest of the league

Well, evidently by that result, the shortcut drafting while having pluck a few decent player is not going to stop the middle of the table stagnation.

Clarko is the most overrated coach the game has ever seen, look at the players he had at his disposal, I rate beveridge and Hardwick miles ahead.

never coach of the years so how is that? And here’s a tip, through Clarko tenure bigfooty mos certainly has not rated hawthorns list. But now they are gone they were champions?

so why is bigfooty posters ratings of current players worth a flying feck?

It’s called nailing the draft picks, you end up with some of the best players the games seen, you’d wanna capitalise, and clearly he did, but even Mark Neeld would have landed 2 or 3 cups with those side.

rubbish theory lions win a spoon before lethal arrived. Coach just ‘lucky?’

Would anyone take Hawthorn's list over the Gold Coast's? Besides the usual deranged Hawthorn supporters.

Not in a millions years and I’m a hawks supporter. Rowell, Anderson, king, lukosus, Bowes, Ainsworth and Weller would all just about make our current side. Rankine who’s injured is going to be a jet as well....I’ll tell you a secret- they were all top end talent...

I quoted seven teams here who have gone through a rebuild via draft. If even three of them get a flag before hawthorns next I’ll concede to all of you

they won’t of course

I also see in ladder predictions from the usual suspects that up and coming teams like Carlton and Melbourne don’t rate many finals mentions either.

I found if you have two or more Consecutive seasons with sub 80% percentage, you are at least seven years off being a threat. And that’s when a team actually become a threat, it’s by no means guarteed.

Carlton have had more sub than over 80 recently. It’s University-Fitzroy territory. Huge respect to blues fans who’ve stuck fat.No other supporters have ever been asked to endure that
On my seven year rule, look out for these teams:
Team (sub 80%) first flag threat
GWS (2012-14) 2021
Melbourne (2012-15) 2022 (but in another slump maybe)
St Kilda (2014-15) 2022
Essendon (2015-16) 2023
Brisbane(2014-17) 2024
Carlton (2015-18) 2025
Fremantle(2016-18) 2025

other teams rarely have sub 80 these days especially non vic clubs and Geelong home ground advantage perhaps

then there’s the Gold Coast

‘that’s not the point. Gold Coast won’t win one till 2028, if at all. they only just bottomed out. And I rate Dew as a coach

Unfortunately I don't think Hawthorn are going to do too well this year.
They will really struggle.

Unfortunately I think you're both right and, as much as it pains me to say it, I think it's all downhill from here for Hawthorn and it will be a rough few years.

Your aging mob just got thrashed by an aging Geelong side. Wouldn't be on my high horse if I were you.

Gold Coast's array of players in the 18-22 bracket is so much better than Hawthorn's it's scary. I wouldn't be surprised if they surpassed Hawthorn this year, and if it did, that would remain the status quo for a pretty long time.

I always overrate teams I hate. Even when their lists outright suck, I tend to pessimisticly convince myself they are much stronger than they really are.

That I have absolutely no concerns about Hawthorn whatsoever should be a massive red flag to Hawthorn supporters. If you've stopped me from being worried, you are in big trouble.

yeh nah. I think succeed means flags and these bottom out teams just don’t seem to, so why pick a failed concept? Gold Coast just another team we have the wood on

Hang on the Suns 18-22 talent is better than most clubs? What point are you trying to make? We should bottom out for a decade so we can have the same number of young players? No thanks.

Clarko isn’t going to pull a rabbit out of the hat, and he hasn’t previously. Hawks got their draft picks right, and they all peaked at perfect times. They have a weak list full of overrated players now.
In the past he got the best out of his players, but when the best he can get out of the current ones is average, what is he going to do?
They’ll be useless for a few years now.
I don’t think it’s too early to critique Wingard, 8 years in the system, teased us early days, will likely play another 80 average games, retire and be forgotten about.

Nail on the head. Still think he is getting the best out of most of the current players. The best just ain’t as good as it used to be.

Without Franklin, Hodge, Roughy, Mitchell, Gibson, Lewis (need I go on?) types on their list it was never going to be the same.

Clarko can still coach but this list management strategy is fast catching up to him.
