Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?

Gunston (27) and Breust (28) are “elite” for their respective positions then you’ve got, Wingard (26), O’Brien (25), Lewis (20) and now Patton (26) who gives Hawthorn a big marking target. The forward-line doesn’t lack “talent” it’s just the overall structure and gameplan that made it ineffective in 2019.

Hawthorn can for example can trade pick 11 for a key defender or draft one.

There will be some big surprises this trade period down at Dingley. Coming in and going out. :(

Gunston doesn't seem to play forward much anymore and I could be wrong but I don't think Breust is as good as he once was. As for Wingard, same problem as Gunston as he doesn't stay forward much. O'Brien and Lewis are not really proven yet though Lewis has shown some good signs and Patton, well given his injury history you can't rely on him, though I very much hope he gets over his injuries and forges a proper career as I feel really bad for him.

whats next?

Are we going to compare Dustin Martin to Worpel?

You know you want to

Mate this started out as all you ‘successful’ clubs fans telling us hawks fans how it works, and like ‘worpel? Is that all youve got?

Fact is we do have arguably the premier mid in the game, and hes not called worpel

I'll give you that for sure as likely an influencing factor. This is a very intelligent response that's considering a few factors, a lot better than some of the other stuff posted.

You do realise that's also an indictment on Hawthorn's midfield quality rather than praise of Worpel....

Do you think Worpel would be tagged in the Giants, Tigers, Pies or Cats teams? No, because they have better players.

And I haven't once said Worpel is no good, he is. Just Taranto is better.

Again, the hawks midfield without mitchell head to head went OK against those teams, probably any team except richmond or brisbane

Good thing with the style you play you don't need a ruckman. Doesnt really matter too much

but the tigers had two proper ruckman in the grand final and pretty much all year?

CCJ looks alright to me.

He might look like one to you, but he's still playing seconds football and averaging 15 touches, 17 hit outs.

In fact, he got beaten 45 hit-outs to 8 by a VFL lifer in the last game he played. Superstar.

Oh dear.

He is playing 2nds due to Nankervis, Soldo doing a decent job and being behing Lynch and Riewoldt fwd

ccj was a key part of the vfl premiership and had a huge grand final

chol was mostly in the ruck, the contested marks ccj took around the ground was game winning.

With that many problems you’d think we would miss finals

they did ?

I meant good ruckman. You have 2 pretty ordinary ruckmen let's be honest. There's a reason you're close to bottom in the afl for clearances.

they are battlers but they do a good job at nullifying the star ruckman usually. playing about 50% each they are a handful fit and fresh - it works well as long as there are not injuries and the rotations get wrecked

soldo has pretty good potential due to not playing football until recently. He is getting better at an alarming rate and is huge and fit

they was the original point i was trying to convey - CCJ seems to have genuine top upside as opposed to being a work horse. could be wrong of course. hopefully adelaide stay away from him.

Does he though? From what I've seen he's just Ok.. not much to think otherwise.. Bit undersized compared to a lot of modern ruckman

I know he is a good player but Worpel really does look like he is from rural Alabama and enjoys spending too much time with his sister.

Bannockburn is probably a little worse.

Lmfao hahaha

6 years?

Based on what? What is limiting Worpel's ceiling? Can't for the life of me figure out what will stop him from having the ability to be an elite inside mid in the AFL.

its not really my opinion but there is a perception strong body inside mids type sometimes have lesser upside hence they slip to picks 25-60.

warps is obviously a good player itll be interesting to see what the finished product looks like
