Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?

Just need to trade in Kreuzer and get Tom Boyd out of retirement and they’ll have the full set of broken down Pick 1’s.

We've got 2 at the moment and aren't even scratching the surface of the club that has had 1/3rd of the Pick 1s in the last 15 years.

In short NO they have squandered up to 6 r1 picks in recent years , o router , o meara wingard and beyond tom Mitchell you’d be hard pressed to convince Anyone but an ardent head in the sand Hawk that the rest of the acquisitions are any better than B grade talents

Bottom 4 next year?

I do love how supporters of clubs which win a flag crawl out of the woodwork after the season is over.

LOL

Why are you overlooking Sicily and Worpel? They are the equivalent of first round picks!

this team is about to fall off a cliff

7 players turn 30 or more in 2020
4 more in 2021

2 of the 22 didn't play a game in 2019

thats more than half the 22, and the team peaked at finishing 9th

This is so over

They’ve certainly helped make you competitive I’m not convinced a top 4 spot beckons though which is what the op was posing

Who said anything about top 4? Hawthorn have a fair way to go before they build a list good enough to challenge for the Premiership, but the Hawks have got some nice pieces to build around like Sicily, Worpel, Lewis, Hardwick etc. Hawthorn will get Maginness this year as a F/S and Downie next year who’s touted as a top 5 prospect.

There is every chance Hawthorn rebound strongly in 2020. Now that doesn’t mean “Premiership contention” but Hawthorn did beat the majority of the top teams all without Mitchell.

Tigers have proven that you can win premierships with a great game plan, some A graders and a big bunch of B graders!

What do you think of Taranto?

Put a decent 22 together (question the depth) and are coached well.
Would depend on the definition of success though

Can they win a flag - not any time soon would be my prediction. I think far too many teams are ahead of them
But they'll stay competitive.

The op posed the Q could they succeed by ignoring elite talent , I made it simple aNd equated That to at least top 4. I’m sorry you can’t understand that

Top 4 twice in 4 years. only looks poor compared to 4 straight grand finals before that (and top 4 twice in the 4 years before THAT)

Hawthorn success: three premierships and 4 grand finals in four years
Hawthorn mediocrity: one premiership and two prelims in four years
Hawthorn failure: two top 4 finishes, no winning finals in four years
