Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?

No different to other clubs who are linked to plenty of players.

Freo not included, of course.
Maybe its just the boards I've seen but there is a distinct difference with the Hawthorn board and others with you guys thinking you can get a whole heap of elite talent that's basically impossible to bring in short of trading a valuable player or two. I suppose you did trade Burton so there's every chance you would trade a Worpel.

For what its worth, I think Hawthorn absolutely can succeed without going to the top end of the draft. They have arguably the best development system in the league with Clarkson able to squeeze every bit of ability out of role players. They then aim to trade in the elite talent so its not a gamble.

I like how the Hawks rate draft picks, as a lottery. They are not afraid to trade a whole heap of picks for elite talent which is how it should be because statistically, there is every chance your top 10 pick is a dud.

List wise, even with Patton next year, they need a better spine. Patton has never actually shown to be that good and the defense is going to struggle to consistently hold elite KPFs, especially if their midfield is getting beaten but I think the Pies and others have shown you can go far without elite KPDs (Moore is injured all the time)

Yeah, Hawthorn are tracking well. Bottom 8 with one of the oldest teams to ever play AFL.

Just did a quick check because I was curious and this was the average age for all teams that have played so far this round

1. Sydney - 24 years, 0 months
2. St Kilda - 24 years, 1 month
3. Fremantle - 24 years, 5 months
4. Melbourne - 24 years, 8 months
5. Essendon - 24 years, 10 months
6. GWS - 25 years, 1 month
7. Port Adelaide - 25 years, 8 months
7. Richmond - 25 years, 8 months
9. North Melbourne - 25 years, 9 months
10. Geelong - 26 years, 10 months
10. Adelaide - 26 years, 10 months
12. Hawthorn - 27 years, 1 month

Just browsing stats noted here. https://afltables.com/afl/stats/alltime/misc_players.html#11

Hawks 2015 grand final not only the oldest premiership team ever, but also the greatest total games played ever in a single game 3670. Well ahead of the other teams in the list

I don't know if it's in Ron The Bear's capacity but I'd be interested to know how many games that 22 played. Probably about 15 given Frawley is in it but teams like Hawthorn, Brisbane and Geelong who has sustained success with old teams had a lot of continuity.

I remember when Hawthorn were no chance of being able to bring in O’Meara and Mitchell in the same period.

“You’ll have to choose one or the other! You won’t get both!”

Helps that both were uncontracted and Sydney need to shed cap space. That’s not the case with Whitfield and Hill and while you guys think GWS are going to let Coniglio walk for pick 15, the rest of us interpret the words differently.

Any bet you want to do that you don’t get two of Coniglio, Hill and Whitfield this year

Are rated so financial they donate soft taxes to prop up the rest of the competition
Pokies arent great socially but if thats unsustainable, so is the victorian govt who reels in substantial amounts of cash

Nice try
Try?

Try what?

Everything I wrote is true?

What has the government have to do with the income that is relied on by hawthorn to stay afloat?

How do Hawthorn plan on satisfying GWS with trades for Cogs and Whitfield (who I believe they are after as well)

Both are worth two low 1st round picks each with Whitfield probably being worth more than that he is probably the most in form player in the comp

Don’t let the facts get in the way of the story

The answer is Clarkson, it always is

Why are you talking about Hill?

Amusing.

Maybe you can provide a list of times where a FA contract has been matched?

It shouldn’t take you long.
A lot of that stems from the situation for example a higher team poaching a lower teams asset for example T Lynch and Rich. The asset Rich could offer wasnt better than the AFL listed compo so that made sense. Your first pick is better than the AFL listed comp so that would be going to GWS in any potential trade. That would be the starting point for the trade and you would be throwing more than that into the trade IF coniglio chooses Hawthorn. If you think you are signing him without giving away compensation you are delusional

Greater Western Sydney CEO David Matthews said the club wouldn’t hold Coniglio against his will if he requests a trade at the end of the season.

“Matching theoretically makes sense but you would never want it to come to that,” Matthews told the Herald Sun.

“If there are reasons they want to go, you would let them.”
