Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?

How did they go when matched up against superstar Worpel? None of them got more clearances, and they barely got the ball inside 50, scoring 29 points for the game. Worpel doubled Taranto's clearance count.
You know if football careers were 1 game long against one side you might have a point.

I actually think Worpel is/will be a gun and is great value from his pick. But your argument is completely stupid and the fact only biased Hawks fans are giving it credit should tell you something.

Taranto is the better of the two.

This is terribly overrating Worpel.
If given the choice between the 2 no one is taking Worpel over Taranto right now. He might get there eventually but that's speculation and Taranto still has improvement too.

No one is picking Worpel over Taranto, Hawks would make that trade tomorrow.

I would take Taranto over Worpel, but I do wonder how much of that is just my bias weighing the expectation of where a #2 draft pick will end up versus a #45 draft pick.

If you gave someone all the footy knowledge in the world, but somehow removed from them the knowledge of where the two were drafted, I imagine he wouldn't have too much separating them.

Stop feeding the trolls.

Trying to goad blaisee into starting a thread on the topic of Worpel. Last time he tried to talk down a Hawthorn player in a thread he'd started, said player went on to win the Norm Smith later in the year:

blaisee is our lucky charm, and I take his stance on Worpel as a good omen for the future.

That was 1 game out of many great performances in the second half of the year. Teams were tagging him by the end of the season. Tagging the 20 year old. Hilarious.

Didn't Burton finish 2nd or 3rd in the Hawks B and F in his second season as well?

If by 2nd or 3rd you mean 4th. Then yes, and it was by far his best season so far, which I guess is your point, but 4th is not 1st and Worpel probably got a majority of his votes in the second half of the year when young players are often starting to drop off. Will be interesting to see if he can maintain the impact he was having in the second half of the year once Mitchell is back in the side.

This was a truly prophetic thread, that is now proven pretty much spot on.

Thank you for bringing it up

middle of the road club, few decent pickups might scrape them in the 8 but they will never be a premiership team with this playing group... I see clubs like St Kilda as a club who ignores the draft for the next few years and really benefit from it with a top 4 finish next season

I'll give you that for sure as likely an influencing factor. This is a very intelligent response that's considering a few factors, a lot better than some of the other stuff posted.

You do realise that's also an indictment on Hawthorn's midfield quality rather than praise of Worpel....

Do you think Worpel would be tagged in the Giants, Tigers, Pies or Cats teams? No, because they have better players.

And I haven't once said Worpel is no good, he is. Just Taranto is better.
