Vader, tell me how van Berlo leads us on the field on game day because I just see his opponent/s to run rings around him.

See this is just wrong.

I'm not a fan of taggers, negative run with players or any of that sort if player but VB was very good yesterday.

He didn't acclimate high possessions yesterday but he did shut down Hartlett in the second half and this was very pivotal in allowing us to get back into the game. He was on Boak in the first half and Hartlett was almost BOG. Second half, VB moved onto him and cut him out if the game.

Without him, we don't get back into the game.

Credit where credit is due.

The fact that our captain was tagging their captain, is, in itself, an embarrassing symbol for our club.

At least when Port tagged Ricciuto and McLeod they gave the jobs to Carr and K. Cornes. No chance of mistaking those two for superstars.

Not really.

It is if you believe the hype that the captain has to be your best player.

But it's not if you view it as simple as one player playing his role in the team and doing whatever it takes it win. Leading by example is making sacrifices to allow others to be successful in their role.

Both Allan border and Steven Waugh were never our best players but have been our best captain in the past 30 odd years.

The problem with this post is it assumes the club never gets anything wrong.
I think it's hard to assume that posters here on BF know more than the coaches & players, who work with the man on a daily basis. Actually, it's the height of arrogance. Doubly so when I have yet to hear a single person (who has actually met VB) speak with anything other than reverence about his leadership abilities.

The only place where his leadership credentials are doubted is on BigFooty.

Untrue.

I can think of at least one non-Adelaide sycophant in the media who thinks he should be replaced.

And I reckon there's a few more who just don't want to say it out loud.

Mark Ricciuto said on the rush hour a few weeks back that Patrick Dangerfield will more than likely be the captain next year.

Did you read the article that Ricciuto wrote? Nowhere did he question VB's leadership abilities - on or off the field.

We have the luxury of not having personal relationships get in the way of sound decision making.

I thought we lacked on field leadership in the last 6 minutes on Sunday. We should have maintained possession at all costs once we were 20 in front. There should have been no easy possessions for them, or shots at goal. Even 8 points in front with a couple of minutes to go and them with a run on, someone should have steadied the ship. VB, Rutten, Danger, I'm looking at you.

The proof is in the preseason runs. He leads them.

No, you're not reading what I'm writing. I'm not disputing that he's a leader on the track. We all get that.

The point is, you are asserting (by implication) that he is not a leader anywhere else other than the training track, and in particular on the footy field. I am saying you have no proof that this is the case. The only evidence we have to go on in terms of his on-field leadership is the reverence with which his teammates speak of him. I don't mind you having an opinion on this, but don't try to present something as fact when you don't actually know.

Or am I misinterpreting you, and you actually do think he's a leader on the field? If so, I apologise.

I hear his teammates speak highly of him and he is well spoken and he may be a good leader on the field but I don't think he has what gives the team inspiration or a "lift" as he did in his early days as captain.

I would not be surprised if he relinquished the captaincy to try and return to being the player he was (good gritty midfielder).
This was discussed with mates last night, some agreed, some strongly disagreed.

People say this because they were never the prettiest batsmen to watch, but Border and S. Waugh sit 2nd and 3rd respectively on Australia's all time leading test run scorers list, and both maintained an average of 50+ for over 150 tests. Using these two as an example in a conversation about Van Berlo is just wrong.

A captain need not be the best player in the team, but they should at least have the ability to provide inspiration through their acts on the field. Mark Bickley certainly wasn't our best player, but his sheer desperation and ferocity of attack on the ball is the kind of thing that make your team mates take notice. I just don't see this kind of stuff from Van Berlo.

You can do those thing without having the ball in your hand.

Look, I'm not advocating VB continue on as captain next year and am in full support to hand it over to Dangerfield or Sloane but to say VB doesn't lead his team mates in an inspirational way is just wrong.

The player, our players will see his gut running to prevent the best players from the other team from getting the ball and this will allow Crouch, Dangerfield, Sloane and co to receive it going the other way. He creates turn overs by the applied and implied pressure to the ball handler. He doesn't need to get it 40 time to be BOG.

Of course he wont, Roo is part of the group that mentored VB in his earlier years and is an ambassador of the club.

There's zero chance for a club man like Roo to come out and be critical of VB being captain. I would imagine (just as Cornes found out) that you're not allowed to be 100% honest in a public forum about certain aspects of the club.

That is the other problem with VB, he is too straight laced. When he gets into scuffles it's embarrassing, and no one is intimidated by him. It's a poor symbol for the club. Figure heads impact organisational performance. We are hurt by having a captain who most would imagine sipping a mug of cocoa in bed by 9pm every evening.

Agreed. Van Berlo is a total soft ****.

I didn't see him switch off Boak in the second half, that was just something BACCS claimed.

He went head to head in the first half, and did ok. Less well in the second, and failed to tighten up when the run was on

I seem to recall him being voted one of the worst captains in the league.

I don't recall him being spoken highly of by interstate media, coaches or players?

My memory might not be perfect, but my recollection is that its only the AFC that talks up his leadership. And well, they would wouldn't they?

Mark Ricciuto said on the rush hour a few weeks back that Patrick Dangerfield will more than likely be the captain next year.

Why would that happen? If VB is really the best leader & unanimous choice?

Nope, was certainly on Hartlett in the second half.

I loved it when Thommo ripped those two Freo dickheads off of him the other week.

Also loved Crouch giving it to Port on the weekend.
