We are still in our era, but in the twilight, and some of our team may end up as coaches, like Brisbane is well represented. Who do we see as future coaches?

Ling jumps straight at me. Good communicator, clever, tough.

A lot say Mackie has the credentials.

Bartel's much improved media interaction combined with his onfield nous and ability to direct suggests a future in coaching... It would suck to see him in another club's colours if he were to follow the traditional rookie assistant coach pathway.

Yes Harry is pretty much a lock to be a defensive coach the moment he retires. Selwood is head coach material. Enright & Chappy must have brilliant footy brains and could do the job. I don't see Ling's career as a tagger and nice guy as coaching material - he'd need to be trained in a role.

Jimmy is a dark horse, every club in the league will offer him some type of role but it remains to be seen if he is off field leadership material.

Heard from a few people that as much as he is a larikin James Kelly does a lot of on field coaching so wouldn't be surprised to see him slip into a role somewhere

The ones who are naturals on TV will prbably not do it. Look at Lyon, Healy, Dermie etc. Big dollars , no care factor but....

SJ , its been said that he is a footy brain and could be a coach later post footy.

Ling , will be much better as grey haired coach than a Redheaded footballer. Anyone with his shape that has kept up with gun mids for so long has to be switched on.

Bartel , could see him as Capt.coach @Bell Park to a flag before he hangs them up

The one who Id love to see at a local level, is CamM. Can you imagine being coached by this guy. If he got those eyes going , not one player would dare put in a short step

No mention of Joel Corey? Understated player certainly, and maybe not the first the comes to mind as the 'public' side of coaching, but has a great brain for the game, and never gives less than 100% - perhaps not at AFL level, but would be a brilliant coach.

I'm sure there was a story in the Addy last year that said he actually does do some coaching.I think it was with an U/16 team somewhere in Geelong [St Joeys ???]

I remember seeing an article about SJ coaching a team in Geelong also, cant remember the team though???

I've heard our players asked this question during interviews, and the most common names coming from them as potential coaches are SJ, Kelly & Mackie :thumbsu:

Harry Taylor

^ What he said!

Harry is a real student of the game, and I understand he's really bright too (ie high IQ). He's worked hard to get where he is and I reckon that the best coaches come from hard working (ie not supremely gifted) players. (cf Gary Ayres)

Can anyone think of a great coach we have produced in our history?

I guess you could say a couple who have coached us, (Reg, maybe Bobby) but we have never produced people like Sheeds, Hafey, Ronald Dale, Jock etc.

I cannot think of any coach of note that has come from our club. Bit sad really. On top of that, I am not sure I see anyone in this lot either.

I cannot imagine Harry Taylor as a head coach - he just doesn't seem to have the presence, and would seem more at home as a stats man or game historian.

Lingy is too likeable.

Harley will do admin.

SJ isn't disciplined enough.

Selwood maybe - strong leadership and character, but I don't think he is too bright from all reports - including his own assessments re school.

Someone might surprise, like an Enright - don't know much about him though.

I don't see us providing coaches like the Tigers of the 70s, Bombers and Hawks of the 80s, WCE the of 90s, or Lions of the 2000s.

We just haven't given birth to coaches in the past, and I don't see it happening with the current squad/era.

SJ the dark horse for mine. Lingy will end up in the media. I seem to remember Jimmy talking about maybe wanting to go into politics (with Tim Callan?) at some stage, although I doubt it'd be straight off the bat.

On that note I'm surprised more hasn't been made of the concentration of ex-Lions on our coaching panel - Scott, Lappin and Carracella. Would have thought that's a bit of an oddity, having three guys from the same premiership(s) on the same coaching panel.

Both Scott and Thompson are on record as saying SJ as the one most likely to become a senior AFL coach.

interesting thread ... i've wondered this given there's now three ex-brisbane premiership players coaching.

selwood is the obvious one. someone above said he may not be bright enough, but i've heard a story that geelong interviewed him before being drafted and he pretty much nailed the game plan word for word to the coaches.

i never really pictured those brisbane thugs the scott brothers as coaches, so wouldn't be surprised if someone from left-field ends up coaching ... josh hunt? cam mooney?

would be great to see one of our current players as geelong coach one day .... preferably recommended by CEO tom harley to president cameron ling's board .... to much to ask?

Depends on what you think a "great" is. Premierships? Then no, nobody of note. But I was around the club when Billy Goggin coached, and he did have the ability to extract the max out of most players. Obviously David Clarke and Garry Sidebottom may dispute that.

This current era of players is surely unique. 2 flags, 5 consecutive years finishing top 2 H & A season, that kind of success and confidence must lend itself to a few being able to make it as a coach. Milburn, Scarlett, Chapman to name a few more. I'd be amazed if there isn't a popular demand for Chappy's services when he retires. EVERYTHING about him is success, and he has done it hard as well.

Well we all know that you are not called great as a coach if you don't win a few flags. Goggin could never be called great as a coach in any ones book. Handy player though.;)

The current era of the club is great. I don't really know the players inside out, but none of the ones we know thru exposure seem to be the head coach type, let alone potential great coaches.

As i said, someone might surprise, like a Hunt or Enright etc (not Scarlett, Chapman or Milburn I don't think). I have heard Thomson and others thought SJ most likely - I don't see it, does anyone really think it likely?

I agree that Harley could be a potential CEO, and Ling a potential President.
