IT was back to business for the Cats yesterday, the Christmas break a memory and the first round of the NAB Cup on February 25 pencilled in.
The Cats trained in the morning, missing much of the steamy 37C heat, but it was still hot enough to make the cooling sprays welcome.
Assistant coach Ken Hinkley said all the players had reported back in good shape and that the fitness levels were high.
``They really attacked today, I was really pleased with the way they went about it,'' he said.
``The boys trained much harder than they did pre-season last year, the skill sessions were longer and you can tell their running ability is a lot better.
``The recruits are all going really well and they have all fitted in well.''
Hinkley said one of the most pleasing aspects of the training was to have former captain Steven King back in full training a week before he was scheduled.
``There were a couple of players who we didn't expect back until next Monday, including Kingy, and it's a bonus to see them fit and working hard,'' Hinkley said.
``The game these days says you have to be able to run so you have to have running types of players.
``We aimed to recruit the best possible players we could and Tom Hawkins would obviously have been taken high in the draft and Joel Reynolds is a good player and our other recruits have all got good leg speed.''
The Cats will continue their training regimen with plenty of game action scenarios until practice matches begin in early February.
Some of them will be competing in the regular coastal ocean swims over the next few weeks and there will be a large contingent of Cats taking part in Amy's Ride tomorrow.
