Why 25? Hawk and Danger and Duncan another year closer to the end.. has to be 24. Why not btb then? I think if we win it this year, we will see multiple retirements(well, at least 3)
I think when the young blokes (Bruhn, Clarke, etc.) have another season's worth of games into them is when we'll hit our straps. But as I also said about 2024, who knows? It could be this year! :D

Can we just pump the brakes on Conway a little?

I thought he played well for a second-game ruckman, but let's keep it in perspective - he kept Meek honest and had a few good moments, but Meek did win the ruck battle overall... and he's Lloyd Meek, not Sean Darcy, Max Gawn, Tim English or Jarrod Witts.

For my mind, he did enough to keep his spot, and has a really good set of hands, but there's a fair way to go as well.

This board does this all the time - wanting a much-hyped young player to succeed so badly that an ok performance must be talked up as excellent. He was decent, and that's more than enough at this early stage in his career.
I don't agree that Meek won the ruck duel. Meek dominated against SDK and won against Blitz but I thought by eye, not looking at numbers, Conway got clean taps to advantage and hood ground level involvement was good.

He tired out, and I would rest the big tyrannosaur rather than fly him to Adelaide. But I thought he won for his time on ground

Game was a bit meh but im glad we gave hawk a win.
Our good patches were really good our bad patches our midfield got owned and defence didnt handle it well.

Some postives i liked were
Bruhn was really good when its hot his clearancr work is what we need and hes developing more class away from the stoppage. Just needs to keep building the tank.
Dempsey was very impressive and is looking like hes here to stay. Interesting to see him play wing more-whether thats to solve our fwd line squeeze i dont know but he looks good as a link player.
I was very happy with clark (albeit he probably gets rested next week) and stengle looks like finding his old form.

Conway still clearly doesnt have the tank to be a full year first ruck (and thats a problem for us) but some of his ruckwork and skills is really promising.
I liked parfitt and kudos to him because i thought it was done. Its still a problem because as i said earlier in the week we still have too many similar mids and in particular parf and atkins are very similar..im not sure they can both fit together (and i doubt atkins is dropped)but we will see.

Negatives were sdk still looks very out of sorts, at times close was lazy and needs to lift or get dropped. Mullin was ok and we probably cant judge him until hes had 30 games but i dont see it.
We will need to rotate players given the 5 day break i wouldnt be surprised to see 4 or 5 changes again next week.
Breaking news: Guy who started playing the sport 2 years ago doesn't look like a star in game number 8.

Love your work PO, but if there was a game to criticize Mullin this one wasn't it.

First time he's actually shown athletic traits at AFL level IMO. Played a little bit more on instinct rather than just trying to not to make a mistake, and used his speed and strength to get himself out of trouble.

Made a top 10 draft pick in Watson look silly on occasions too. Side note, looks like second coming of Paul Medhurst that bloke.

Tiny body, giant head, and about 15 of his 75kgs are in the backside. He looks like a Lego man.

He reminds me of another ruckman who wore the number 6.
He was in the rooms to celebrate with Hawkins. Fantastic Ruck, genuinely lovely guy. Has the most massive hands I've ever seen. Need him coaching at Geelong again.

The curious case of Jack Bowes..

Looked very good once again coming on late (as per each practice match).

Surely next week he is unleashed for a full game.

It’ll be interesting to see if he can keep that form up for 4 quarters or is coming on late and being fresh enough of an advantage to make someone look better than they are.

Tune in Saturday night to find out!

You must not be around here often. If anything it's the opposite.

Bruhn was written off before he even pulled on our jumper. Clark was called a bust in his first VFL game. Holmes was heavily criticised in his debut year, and Knevitt's already been written off by many.

Henry's somehow on the verge of missing out on the side in the eyes of many on here, and the Dempsey hype was only legitimised beyond doubt two weeks ago.

SDK's been called a soft pretty boy on many occasions, with his hair being the focus on many occasions.

Pretty sure 50% of the activity on this board over the last two weeks has been about why Mullin isn't ready, and shouldn't play until next year.

I'm not pulling these out of my arse either...you can go back and check for all these posts. The Jhye Clark thread is a ripper.

We're guilty of a lot of things on this board...but over-hyping our youngsters isn't one of them.
Good post Kobe.. spot on 100% I'm not sure on the poster either

Meek was a massive reason Hawthorn got back in the game twice.

Again, I really liked Toby. But if that game came from Stanley, we’d be disappointed again.

I would like Parfitt to keep getting games while he’s playing well. At least while Guthrie and Danger our out.

Even if he’s not best 22 come finals on the dry larger grounds, I do see a role for him playing the wet winter games, especially at KP.

He should allow us to rest our younger and older mids throughout the year.

Assume he/she means we're another 25-50 games into the youngsters and maybe a Bailey Smith (Or player of similar ilk) away from contention.

Wouldn't guarantee it, but I can understand the premise if that's the case.

Benefit of having so many kids in the team is we can use the "We'll be better next year" trope which everyone else seems to use.

I broadly agree but I thought some of his ruck work was instrumental in the third - got the footy moving forward and outside Hawthorn’s structure.

Some arrogant (or, to be kind, overconfident) coaching leaving our best extractors out of the centre at the start of the second and final quarters. Surprise, surprise, we got smashed in the clearances.

Some practice in a wet ground wouldn’t go astray also. Bowes was one of the few with clean skills (obviously helped that he was fresh),

Overall our first quarter got us the win. Hawthorn threw everything at us and we held on.

Give the kids experience and bank the wins.

Just glad we got the job done for Hawk.

Thought there were really disappointing periods of that game where the team and several individuals didn’t do what was required. Just needed 10 minutes of intense footy in the 2nd quarter to put the game out of reach and make it an easy kill.

Could you elaborate on that point or aspect please

Im a freelancer/contractor thus Public holidays are just like any other day , if you want to get paid you have to work , and thats what i did today , just finished , so i didnt see the game

But reading this thread/review of the game , alot of players are having said about them that they played well

Thus just 2 points - what were the poor/dissappointing aspects of Geelongs play today , and who were the poorer players for Geel today

When i looked up this thread title to see who had won the game , i wouldnt have been shocked ( given the outs ) if Haw had beaten us , so im very pleased the Cats have banked the 4 pts

Played well for 2 quarters badly for 1. Did enough but not exactly convincing. Parfitt continues his good form. Stengle getting some form back. Jack Henry had another game he'd like to forget. He got easily pushed aside multiple times giving up goals. Another time he just wrestled with his opponent leaving another Hawthorn player to take an uncontested mark right in front of him. Then he looked around at other players as though there was nothing he could do. Really poor effort.
Wasn't a great day for defenders but Jack and SDK had moments they would rather forget today. That said they both also did some really really good stuff. 3rd quarter there was a moment Hawks were going to go forward Henry reads the play, drops off his man and breaks up the play and either hits Hawkins on the chest or gives it to someone in the clear who does. Hawkins misses, but we lock it in and Conway kicks one.

SDK took some crucial marks and made some key spoils.

Wouldn't mind him just going head to head with Bont like he did last year.

One of the few we have who can match him physically, and he managed to get his own ball while doing that too.
