Autopsy Cats lose to Saints by 7 points - should have been more

An interesting stat, if it exists, would be a player-by-player "possessions per CBA".

Gotta say, too, that over the past year we must be leading the league for most wild momentum swings. I suspect that has a lot to do with mid-field fragility, too.

Yes, and no - I think there are a couple of complicating factors here.
  • If we had a fully fit and available list, does he actually make the team? With Smith, Bruhn and C Guthrie in, I'm not sure that he does.
  • You can't go into a season just assuming that Guthrie will pick up another injury and burning a pick on a veteran on that assumption
  • We would have had to give up our first draft pick for him.
Absolutely, he would have been a perfect fit last night - but whether that made him a perfect fit in November 2024, is another story.

And the fourth point - $$$$$

Macrae had 3 years left on his contract, with the reported remaining salary between $2million & $2.2million; so if looking at an annual salary of between $700k -> $750k, based on the figures released by the Herald Sun, that would put him in the top 5 or so paid players at the club... But would be rank as a top 5 player at the club?

I know Bowes was on like $800k for his remaining two years at GC when we signed him, but he was "only" turning 25 the January of his first year with us, so extending his contract to a 4-yr deal, smoothing out his remaining money from GC with a little extra thrown on, was something of a gamble but one most teams would take on a player that age - who also comes with a top 10 pick

The problem with Macrae is that he turned 30 last August, is going to be 33 by the end of his current deal and trying to smooth that over an extra year or two can be a bit of a harder sell for a player who'll then be 34/35 at the end of that contract, and already looked to be slowing down before they turned 30

IF Macrae was out of contract last year, or only 1 year left on his contract where it wouldn't feel as big of a hit to extend by a year or two on top of that, knowing VFL may be his role down the track, then maybe we show more interest

But it doesn't sound like Macrae was interested in moving down the highway, so it's all kinda moot anyway

At centre bounces, we often got first hands on the ball, or near to it, but then it shoots out to one of their players who is clear by a few metres.
I suspect you'll find that's a competition-wide trend and it's been true for quite a while.

In - Mannagh, Stanley, Smith
Out- Mullin, Stewart inj, Bowes

Duncan sub

Not sure we're going to drop 3 players who'll drop into our defensive rotations without bringing at least one defensive option in

Stewart out is obvious, calf issues tend to be more then 1 week unless it's purely a corkie so Smith may not be back this week - and with it being a 6-day break to the Melbourne clash, they may hold him back a week

Mannagh is the only one I'd be thinking is assured of returning if he gets through today unscathed

Agree to disagree... we are allowed to

One things for certain, when Conway returns, De Koning's development has been fast tracked.
He wasn't getting near it last year.

We will probably see a player completely control the air when he goes back to defense.
Let's hope Conway can get games...

Lol Conway reminds of a bloke who i played footy with the day.. We Nick named him tampon. He played 1 game, then out for 3 😁 😁 as he couldn't get his body right and kept getting injured

😆 🤣

Where does Reidy sit in the pecking order of state league rucks? Noting Reidy had a 65 hit out game against Swan Districts in the WAFL finals last year, then backed it up further finals appearances with 51, 44 and 36.

If you parked SDK in the ruck in a state league, how do you think he'd fare?

At the end of the day we have three players who can generally be relied on to average 20+ touches when they play in the middle - Smith, Holmes and Stewart.

With Smith and Stewart effectively both missing it made it really easy for the Saints to limit Holmes' effectiveness. I thought Max worked through the tag well and had a big impact in the last.

We all know our midfield is paper thin and if a single star is missing as Bailey was last night, it's deeply felt.

I was keen for us to chase somebody like Matt Kennedy last year - he ended up at the Dogs for #38 and has had 20+ in both of their games.

Poor coaching on our part by not having Danger (or Stewart) start in the middle when we knew Holmes was getting tagged. At stages during the game we were running CBA attendances of Knevitt, Clark and Atkins which is unlikely to beat any team in the AFL.

Are you judging a bloke against 1 game against each other...
Let's see what he does later the season...
If your talking about Reidy game
Then let's talk how good Meek being since he was a state league player for Fremantle..

There is good and bad in every story

I was very impressed with O’Sullivan yesterday, after being concerned with what I saw of him in the vfl last year.
If we bring in Stanley which I don’t mind for games against bigger rucks then I’d keep O’Sullivan back and play Dekoning Forward. I think we could’ve really used him forward last night particularly with the reluctance to move Jezza deeper for whatever reason.

I know absence makes the heart grow fonder but we should remember Stanley was so bad in games last year we had to sub him out for Blicavs. So those thinking he’ll solve all our problems will be disappointed.

Technically, bringing Stanley in is a defensive option, assuming that means SDK goes to fullback.

I was looking at Brisbane's team for today, especially their forward line:

  • obviously there's Hipwood as their focal point, and I expect Henry will renew that matchup
  • Sam Day, at 196cm is their next KPF; could be Blicavs on him but I wouldn't be surprised if it's O'Sullivan who gets a run on him instead
  • Logan Morris at 191cm is there only other forward over 190cm, so there's you're Guthrie match up

They're surrounded by a fleet of small forwards - so I can see there being a need for the likes of Bowes, Mullin, O'Connor may drop back also etc, to play on those forwards

Not sure is necessarily a game where we need to go extra tall down back, and doing so could well work against us

Sure, but again Lloyd Meek was drafted in 2017 and had 6 years in the system before becoming a best 22 ruckman at his 2nd club. We don't have 6 years.

Could Dempsey work as a defender?
He's got speed and high footy IQ.
I think Mullin is going to take some time.

With Mannagh to come back, we are spoilt for small-mid sized forwards
If "defender" is the operative word, possibly not.
Imho, classic winger.
What about Atkins?
Someone who can stick a tackle, concentrate for long periods of time....

Jack Macrae is a good pickup for them.
I reckon he would have been the perfect replacement for Guthrie. He should play strong footy for at least two more seasons.
Killed us on the inside last night 😔
Yeah but didn't they take on his contract, on a big stack $$
