So, Hawthorn offered CC a three year deal and he knocked it back. Love him or hate him, this speaks volumes about Chris Connolly as a person.
He could have:
(i) Gone back to Melbourne - his home town - taken himself and his family back to a zone more comfortable than here in Perth, and had the back up and support of family and long-standing friends (many not involved in AFL) while he continues trying to do a pretty tough job.
(ii) Escaped from the fish-bowl that is a two team town, given up all the media scrutiny, the million and one questions about his ability to do his job, his face (of late with something negative plastered across it as a headline) splashed across the paper every second day.
(iii) Given himself job security for the next three years, probably on a higher salary than he is on here (no secret that Hawthorn has a fair amount of capital in the bank).
(iv) Had far fewer expectations on him as he works with a club that has just finished 15th - even finishing 9th next year would be a huge achievement.
Instead, he has stuck with the FFC, and as a result:
(i) could be out of a job as early as the middle of next year if things don't improve significantly (see if he gets another 3 year deal offered to him by another club, as a coach sacked mid-season).
(ii) may not have his contract renewed at the end of 2005
(iii) kept himself in the "discomfort zone" of media scrutiny, fish-bowl, two team town, dunno where I'm gonna be this time next year....
(iv) has said with his actions that he is prepared to absorb the crap in an effort to finish what he started
(v) committed himself to our club, the players that play for our club and the supporters who will expect a serious improvement next year... or there will be riots, and a public stringing up of CC from the Town Hall, by his nether regions.
He could have bunked and run - but he didn't. And whether or not you think he can coach or not, for that I reckon he deserves some respect.
