So, Hawthorn offered CC a three year deal and he knocked it back. Love him or hate him, this speaks volumes about Chris Connolly as a person.

He could have:

(i) Gone back to Melbourne - his home town - taken himself and his family back to a zone more comfortable than here in Perth, and had the back up and support of family and long-standing friends (many not involved in AFL) while he continues trying to do a pretty tough job.

(ii) Escaped from the fish-bowl that is a two team town, given up all the media scrutiny, the million and one questions about his ability to do his job, his face (of late with something negative plastered across it as a headline) splashed across the paper every second day.

(iii) Given himself job security for the next three years, probably on a higher salary than he is on here (no secret that Hawthorn has a fair amount of capital in the bank).

(iv) Had far fewer expectations on him as he works with a club that has just finished 15th - even finishing 9th next year would be a huge achievement.

Instead, he has stuck with the FFC, and as a result:

(i) could be out of a job as early as the middle of next year if things don't improve significantly (see if he gets another 3 year deal offered to him by another club, as a coach sacked mid-season).

(ii) may not have his contract renewed at the end of 2005

(iii) kept himself in the "discomfort zone" of media scrutiny, fish-bowl, two team town, dunno where I'm gonna be this time next year....

(iv) has said with his actions that he is prepared to absorb the crap in an effort to finish what he started

(v) committed himself to our club, the players that play for our club and the supporters who will expect a serious improvement next year... or there will be riots, and a public stringing up of CC from the Town Hall, by his nether regions.

He could have bunked and run - but he didn't. And whether or not you think he can coach or not, for that I reckon he deserves some respect.

I reckon he is seeing the critisism as feedback and anyone worth their salt can use these critisisms in a positive manner, commonly known as learning from your errors.

I'm not one for "throwing the knives", I think he can learn and come out stronger from the "errors" he has made. Next season he must re-direct the train onto the correct path.

Hands up those who have never made a bad choice ....

Correct. I liken it to when you first start in small business. You trust people too much and you get ripped off through various ways (whole thread there). After a bit the penny drops and you toughen up.

CC has trusted too many players and they have let him down. That will change if he is as astute as I reckon he is.

I agree with both you guys... but my point is that he is a person of integrity, and deserves respect for that. The easy option would be to head back to Hawthorn. He chose the harder, far more closely scrutninsed option. I hope for his sake he develops a thick outer shell as he is going to need it over the next 12 months.
I also hope that the players repay his faith in them by pulling their fingers out next year!

Yes, very courageous decision. No one can accuse him of being a pansy.

I would not have blamed him if he shot through.

Agree.

His wife loves the Perth climate and lifestyle, maybe she is one who told the Hawks that they do not wish to return to the "Bleak City".

He is preparing to fight and has been honest with where he is at.

I wasn't even aware he had been made that offer.
Good to see he is staying. Although I wish the media over there would let up a little.
