Thurlow has a good record on smalls, he was rated in the comps best small defenders in 2015. If O'Connor was so good against the hawks why did he get chopped. Are you related? There is no comparison Thurlow is in form . O'Connor averaging just 11 off a wing half back in twos is not, I'm not sure where you are coming from pushing his case.We have enough backs out of touch in the AFL Bews Kolo Guthrie... BUT i guess whoever Scarlo picks can't do any worse than those three on Saturday.

Thurlow in 2015 is irrelevant to Thurlow in 2018. He is a very different player now to the one he was pre-ACL.

Personally would set up a little like Richmond and have the following changes
Out Stewart, Guthrie
In: McCarthy, Jones

To have a forward line of Fogarty, McCarthy, Jones, Narkle, Parfitt would be equivalent to having Castagna, Rioli, Butler, Higgins Lambert
Then they have Reiwolldt and Caddy and we have Hawkins and Menzel
Put the same non stop pressure on their backs as they put on everyone elses and see how they stand up to it.
Run 4 smalls on Astbury, Grimes, Rance and Vlastuin. Keep the ball moving, keep tackling the big lugs.
I reckon they are as fallible as anyone else, it just isn't tested against them enough
Then throw further pressure by throwing Danger up there or Ablett, or Menegola
See how they run with pressure

Bews Blicavs Henry Blic on Reiwoldt all day
Tuohy Henderson Kolo Henderson on Caddy all day
Kelly Selwood Duncan
McCarthy Hawkins Parfitt
Fogarty Menzel Narkle
Stanley Dangerfield Ablett
Menegola Jones Cunico S.Selwood

S.Selwood on Cotchin all day
Let Martin and Danger run to see who dominates

Get Stanley to use his speed to trouble Nankervis

Although they have a more available team, I think we could stand up to them playing them at their own game

Tell Kelly, Parfitt, Narkle and Jones to bring on the magic and bamboozle them

Have Fogarty and McCarthy around Rances hips all day

Excited for this one, I hope they select well
You are proposing to drop another small defender and replace the two defenders with two small forwards! Rioli and Butler will be licking their chops at that side. I do not think McCarthy is fit yet after his injury, and I would expect at least 2 full games in the VFL before he is picked, unless you are happy with 3 on the interchange after quarter time.

Putting all of Fogarty, McCarthy, Jones, Narkle, Parfitt into the forward line, will drag five Richmond defenders with them. Hawkins and Menzel will have no space to lead and we will lose our most important forward asset at the moment.

Richmond is 100% due a mental letdown following a hugely hyped game against Collingwood, and WCE’s unexpected loss yesterday basically confirming top two for the Tigers.

If you went back over the last decade I’d wager that most teams a game or two clear of most have some kind of slip up about a month before finals - and in the long run it’s a beneficial thing to happen.
Love the confidence. If I buy a lotto ticket can you give me a 100% assurance I'll win? Please, pretty please?:)

I'd have Kolo as such.

In fact, I'd put him on the fringe of the Simpson desert if I could.

Friday night is the sort of game where your fringe make themselves known. Anyone with half a clue know who they are.

Menzel and Menegola? No.

ATM its Fogerty, Narkle, Kolo, Guthrie (forever fringe) and probably Bews.

Your bottom 4 is the difference in big games, not your top 4.

Kolo cost us 2 goals in the last quarter last time.

that is a list of our fringe players ????
Menzel struggled at the MCG and we can't afford his opponent to run off him because we will get killed. He needs to contribute on the scoreboard AND nullify his opponent from having an impact. His fitness is a worry so keep an eye on his second efforts and opponent. In terms of our midfield Menegola is definitely fringe - he also had a shocking final against Richmond last year and needs to not turn into a ghost. Want to see him have an impact.

Who will do what Dan Menzel did to Swanny in 2011? The moment that the world knew he was going to be a serious player (the world didn’t know what was going to happen 7 days later...)

Menu and in turn the team showed that in the big moments it was us that were going to be the man.

Love to see that happen on Friday. Henry to quell Rance, Kelly to bring down a Dusty don’t argue. Something to take ascendency and March into September with.

Menzel averages more possessions and goal assists at the McG then at Kardinia park. His goal average is the same at both grounds. Not sure where you are getting your facts from.

Think you have mixed up your collingwood games. The game where he beat swan in the one on one was the thriller early in the season. In the last home and away he kicked 5 goals and we spanked them.

His tackle average is less at the MCG versus Kardinia Park. Its also difficult to measure the impact his opponent has by running off him. I'd be happy with a few goals and nullifying his opponents impact on the game.

Jed Bews is nowhere near fringe. Absolute lock

For a forward tackles are just a means to an ends. That end being goals and goal assists. As long as those stats are high it doesn’t really matter how he gets them. Whether taking marks, roving packs or turning the ball over from tackles.

Some people look at Bews' disposal count and assume he's borderline best 22.

I prefer to look at the fact it's been a loooooooooong time since a small forward kicked a bag on us.

On what basis? can you state some facts as I'm sick of people posting he can't play on smalls he isn't the same post acl. Explain please.

My opinion is that he hasn't had an opportunity to play in defense post about May 2017 and that doesn't mean he can't play there, he was recruited as a half back yet doesn't get an opportunity to play there.
The problem with opinions are many are ill informed.
FACTS (please dispute if you think they aren't factual)
1- when he came back from the knee and 12 months out of the game at start of 2017 he played defense from round 1 (no vfl to find touch after 12 months out) for about 5-6 games (he didn't look right , he played on talls and lacked confidence from the knee, he played on Brown NM and Wright GC in 2 games I recall. Was dropped, and rightfully so. I don't think he's the first player to come back from a acl and struggle to start with.
2-Late last year he played 4 games on a wing and averaged 20 possies inc high pressure games v Richmond and Sydney and was dropped for Blitz. Unluckily and was emerg for weeks after and had good vfl form.
3- Was overlooked for O'connor rd 1 and Z Guthrie early in the year?? Played reasonably well in 5 games averaged 16 possies good contested numbers and 63 fantasy points after 5 games unlucky fall guy after ess loss. At this point after 35 odd players used he is ranked 16 highest at geelong in fantasy points which are stats based including pressure acts clangers etc etc these are the closest we have to measure a players output. So he is ranked 16th out of everyone but can't get an oppurtunity? Is it VFL form?
4- His vfl form has been outstanding, I have seen it first hand he has been first emergency (carry over for 3 out of the last 4 weeks)
So summary is he is in form and is ready to go and has fully recovered from an ACL for quite some time. and by the way I found that link regarding him as Geelongs top small defender in 2015... http://www.portadelaidefc.com.au/news/2015-08-05/afl-the-best-defenders

I rate Menzel - not worried about his ability to kick goals - more worried about his fitness going up against a team with speed to burn and how we deal with their spread on the rebound.

Fogarty out Murdoch in
Stewart out thurlow in
Fogarty ain't going nowhere sorry. Unless he's pulled up sore again he's in to stay. We bitch and moan about forward pressure on here all the time, and there are a few players who provide zilch. So we aren't flicking one that provides it in spades.

It is a good thing going into a game like this knowing we have the advantage in the ruck. Midfield can plan with a much more attacking mind set. With Danger in the middle, we can score from centre bounces easier than any other side (as we have seen in bursts last two weeks even against good rucks).

We could really dominate that part of the game this week.

Dear coaches,
I look forward to watching Z.Guthrie, Parsons, Murdoch, O’Connor, Buzza and Simpson on Saturday...in the vfl. Please do not bring these players in for the rest of the season. If there are mass injuries we can reavaluate. Otherwise let’s put the best team out to try and win.
Best wishes
Geelong fans
