Because Mennie was the leading wicket-taker in Shield cricket last year.

FFS it's one of the least mysterious selections in recent memory if you pay a modicum of attention to the domestic scene, yet people paint it as some bizarre unjustifiable head-scratcher. He didn't even bowl that badly against South Africa, just didn't take wickets.
Hobart November hooping wicket.
Back of a length plodder v genuine swing bowlers

Most of the selection decisions have logic behind them its just that Rod Marsh in particular communicated with the media poorly and the media ceased on any comments they could.

The chairman himself said birds batting was a factor, the fact he hasn't put a foot wrong at test level and took a 5 for in his last innings before the WACA test didn't seem like factors they were willing to consider.

Well we have for a while now been picking our number 6 for their bowling ability and it's been 4 out all out so yeah lets select our frontline quick based on his batting.
I think its a lot more relevant now than it was for in AUS. Our attack is not pace centric, bird might hardly bowl if the pitch spins & doesn't crack up, starcs batting basically won us the 1st test.

3 x #11s isn't great, the fact that # 6 & 7 are problematic also makes it relevant, if we had hussey & Gilchrist at 6 & 7 we probably aren't having this conversation

It's not that he's done anything wrong, but he offers a similar skill-set to Hazlewood.

and that skill-set is pretty good.

Bird has 38 wickets@27 that is all that should matter, there is no like for like starc replacement anyway so you pick your next best bowler on tour.
I would say that Patto is basically a right armed Mitchell Starc.

It certainly makes Ussie's inclusion less likely.
I thought that initially, but all judgements on his ability to play spin aside hes a batsmen if they play bird he almost has to be at 6 to strengthen the batting as much as possible.

Mennie looked quite unthreatening on a bowler friendly wicket, it was a terrible selection and looks even worse in hindsight with Bird performing well when he was subsequently selected while Mennie has dropped off the selection radar completely.

Rod Marsh deserved to fall on his sword for that stuff up alone.

It's mystifying because Bird was the better option and was overlooked.

When you only have 2 pacers you cant afford to have one of them either break down mid match or not have the fitness to bowl a lot of overs or else hazelwood carries too big a load.

For this reason cummins behrendorff and partinson shouldnt play and bird should. He is at least less likely to break down than the others and he is capable.

If bird doesn't play one thing is for sure and that is stoinis will bat at 6, if we go 3 frontline spinners they will argue they need stoinis for his bowling if they go a dodgy fitness history quick they will argue they need stoinis for his bowling.

And they will forget to tell Smith that Stoinis can bowl

Far out first cartwright and now stoinis picked for their bowling when neither can bowl.

Selectors should retire to the senile old people's home.

How is Patto bowling in the shield? Hope he has ramped up from the Big Bash where he was very ordinary, though somewhat understandably since it was his comeback.

Stage is set for the great white hope of Australian fast bowling to make his mark.

6 years in the making, unleash Cummins.

This is his time. 10-Fer on the way, series win in India off the back of his bowling.

Lock it in fellas. Cummins will rise.

If you play 3 spinners, surely you don't need extra overs cover. It's not like the medium pace option is actually going to get anyone out

Khawaja & Agar would be my pick assuming the pitch will turn, but that'd be a pretty safe bet

To be fair to Cartwright he had the second best FC average of any Australian batsman in 2016.

I'd let Behrendorff loose. Has the potential to be an absolute star on the world stage, provides the left arm option we've lost with Starc injured which in turn helps Lyon out.

It'll be Cummins, though. Not even sure why people are debating it.
