So Eddy comes out and White goes in to add more defensive pressure - that's where your overload comes from - from your small forwards/small backs.

That's not where the Crows overload came from.

We didn't seem to have an issue with defensive pressure in Sydney or against Freo.

Our defensive pressure wasn't bad against Adelaide, we just didn't react quick enough to the Crows throwing numbers around the contest and we lost too many 50/50s in the last quarter.

Pittard is a quality player and Eddy has not done a thing this year for him to hold down his spot. He was always going to be a break glass in case of an emergency type player. Guy is a 27 yr old rookie and very overrated on this board

5.4 in the pre season game.
The Freo game he kicked 2 in what was a goalkicking feast for our other forwards like RGray and Dixon.
A steadying goal in a Showdown in what is a tough game to stand out and stake any sort of claim.

I just reckon he's performed his team role up to this point without much to fault.

I hope we bring him back for the Carlton game.

IMO the overload came from when we lost our structure and the Crows were able to dominate by having 1-2 close behind the contest to mop up the spill out which they did time and again until we wrestled momentum back. I don't think it was a 'talls' issue per se although it would have helped if Eddy had more than 51% TOG and was able to effect more contests.

I don't care where Pyke gets his extra player from - he's got Talia and Lever down one end and Walker and McGovern down the other so he can afford to pull players from elsewhere because he's playing a different system. I'm saying where we would have to pull it from. Hinkley wants to play heaps of arc to arc forwards/mids/defenders to swarm all over the ground.

Sydney was at the smaller SCG.

Fremantle wasn't able to exploit anything.

I never said our pressure was bad - but it wasn't what I saw against the Dockers. Part of that was their pressure coming back the other way, but part of it was us playing too many immobile players in key posts that they could exploit. It's why we put Trengove up forward and went with Hombsch, Clurey and Jonas - for that extra mobility down back.

Now we've got Houston who IMO is playing better than even Byrne-Jones did last year and is a lock to play every game this year, we don't even need Clurey when Hombsch comes back. I'd rather play Hombsch/Jonas/Houston/Byrne-Jones/Pittard/Hartlett/Broadbent as our back 'seven' (but going by traditional structures it would look like a back 5).

He had one good quarter in a trial game against a team that is struggling big time. He's not crap, just don't think he is the great white hope that some here think he is

This is bullshit.

If this is the case, Eddy and Clurey never would have gotten a game this year.

In other posts you've talked about our depth this year. If we're so deep, why did we play inexperienced talls when that's not the kind of player Hinkley wants to play?

It doesn't matter how many contests you swarm to if you're not in able to win them.

Adelaide's system allows them to play tall and maintain structure while still applying defensive pressure better than any team this year. They played 7 talls and applied that defensive pressure against a really good team last week.

GWS are going to swarm the living shit out of us on Saturday and they aren't going to sacrifice talls to do so.

If we can't apply adequate pressure without sacrificing talls (and I already know we can, I saw it in round 1 and 2), then we need to change something about our list or how we put our team together.

In terms of making finals, he is the great white hope.

Who knows when our next win will be now? I'm not looking forward to Carlton given they beat us last year and have added more talent. Marchbank will have a field day cutting off our poor forward entries.

We've had 1.5 bad quarters this year. Our ball movement and forward entries have been really good otherwise. On exposed form we're a significantly better side than we were last year and i'd expect us to absolutely whomp Carlton unless we fall in a hole.

We could still win this week, we've just made it really difficult for ourselves. Austin coming in late for a small could be enough to even up the contest.

Was one of the criticism of GWS in their loss against Adelaide the fact they didn't run both ways hard enough? I guess we are trying to beat on the rebound/out work them. Our short backman really bites us when Trengove has to play ruck. I take it Westhoff will be rucking some on Saturday.
Trouble is our back line not only is short, but not overly quick.

Round 3
- Tall (Hombsch, INJ)
+ Not Tall (Hartlett)

Round 4
- Tall (Eddy, OMIT)
- Tall (Ryder, SUSP)
+ Not Tall (Pittard)
+ Not Tall (White)

So....... we're heading back to the structureless/systemlessness that cost us a top-4 berth in 2014 and two wasted seasons in 2015/2016?.....
Unfortunately selections this week confirm Ken isn't one for structure.
Replacing Ryder with a flanker continues the last couple of years of replacing the injured Trengove, Carlile, Schulz with short people. He's just gone a step further and dropped a tall and replaced with a flanker as well.
I'm really dumb founded - our form has been really good, with a reasonable system bringing the ball forward. Surely Frampton (looks like he played ok for maggies tonight) or Austin for Ryder, and Pittard for Amon / S.Gray is all that was needed?

Young
r1 17 disposals 3 goals 1,
r2 16 disposals 1 goal 3,
r3 (smashed into the astroturf in fist qtr) 5 disposals.
Young is the last of our issues. I reckon Dixon will play up ground and ruck more than we think. Isolating robbie and Chad. But that only works by a) winning midfield battle and b) fast ball movement with c) precision. When ever one of those three fail we revert to impersonating Kane Cornes passes into our forward line

This

The Spill out behind the pack to their 1-2 extra players is the simple reason why we lost

How easy was it for their coach to organise this?

Why didn't our coaches negate it?????????????????????

What this means to me is that our pkayers weren't that far off winning if we hadnt been slaughtered in clearances by this very simple garden variety center set up tactic
so we should be right this week

Oh wait .. We still haven't worked it out and have dumped Eddy instead
Now we also have F50 problems

ABC how to beat Port Adelaide
Drop a couple of loose players behind the center contests and then don't worry about their excellent midfield
And they won't notice or change up ha ha

Game over

When we play short, Dixon gets double teamed, plays shit, gets frustrated and is likely to either belt someone and or get injured.

See my previous post above^^^

You are right
They beat us by dropping 1-2 players behind the ball ups so we instead go and fix what wasn't broken ( our forward line) and yake Eddy out and hello double triple teamed Dix

If these selections come off, Ken will be the genius and it wouldn't surprise me if we do well but if it's a massive fail, i will turn my focus to 2018 and what coaches will be available, if i were KT i would be bashing on Clarko's door and don't take no for an answer.
Too early in the morning - I read Choco's door and nearly choked on my all bran.

Ah Chees performance last night is living proof you need to see fringe guys like himself have multiple good weeks in a row for him to be up for selection. Very glad we didn't bring him in this week as the guy needs to show some form of consistency.

No wonder our players get confused and miss targets. Feels like we're constantly robbing Peter to play Paul. Our West Lakes 'ugh brothers' play the same structure week in week out year after year. No wonder they look so well drilled and skilled whereas we often look kamikaze. I must be missing something, I don't get it.
