since the selectors have basically stated publically that they're looking for players that are the future of the team

ie. no more picking blokes in their mid 30s who can only give us a couple of years

Test cricket should be treated like a Grand Final, where you pick your best available team every time to win every time. We shouldn't be picking guys based on whether they might still be around in 5-10 years time.

Lyon bowling potatoes and South Africa will carve him.

Pakistan have no trouble with bland offies - we need a LEGGIE for those 3 tests! :straining::mad:
Fawad Ahmed
Shield bowling record - 29.36 average, 52.90 strike rate, 3.33 economy rate
2016/17 Shield record - Yet to play

Cameron Boyce
Shield bowling record - 49.85 average, 80.10 strike rate, 3.73 economy rate
2016/17 Shield record - 80.00 average, 91.00 strike rate, 5.27 economy rate

Kyle Gardiner

Shield bowling record - Yet to play
2016/17 Shield record - Yet to play

James Muirhead
Shield bowling record - 83.50 average, 114.00 strike rate, 4.39 economy rate
2016/17 Shield record - Yet to play

Liam O'Connor

Shield bowling record - Yet to play
2016/17 Shield record - Yet to play

Mitchell Swepson
Shield bowling record - 44.10 average, 63.35 strike rate, 4.17 economy rate
2016/17 Shield record - 79.00 average, 92.61 strike rate, 5.11 economy rate

Adam Zampa

Shield bowling record - 49.71 average, 71.82 strike rate, 4.15 economy rate
2016/17 Shield record - 41.71 average, 59.14 strike rate, 4.23 economy rate

So given each of those bowl plenty of hitable trash, and either have rubbish records and/or a total lack of form rule to them out, who else do you have in mind?

Whilst the panic button has been mashed mercilessly - if indeed the imprimatur is to revamp the side - I can understand all of the decisions... except one.

Matthew Wade FFS. Unless he is batting in the top 6 and Handscomb (not much chop as a keeper) is keeping - he has no place near the Test side.

Nevill can keep and at least valued his wicket - and if you want to take a punt like Renshaw, bring in Whiteman.

Well he clearly was ... sarcasm not your strength

Vaughan loves to troll on twitter, especially Aussies.

Australia picking an English born player was too good an opportunity for him to miss.

Not to mention Renshaw & Khawaja make 2 non Oz born players where England only have Stokes

I think what the Ferguson axing shows is that they made a mistake, he was the wrong call. Right call has been made now with the younger guys givin a chance.

Not really. Ferguson has been one of the leading batsmen in the Shield for 4+ years. Maddinson screams of desperation from the Australian selectors. Not to add the hypocrisy of Trevor Hohns. Callum had the chance to push for runs in the shield but didn't so we didn't pick him. Nic, although hadnt made runs has shown nothing but we are giving him a go on our gut instinct.

These blokes for real?

how max klinger hasn't gotten a game at some point i'll never know

There have been worse batsmen picked for Australia in the last 10 years than him, if he can't get a call up now I doubt he ever will.

The Maddinson selection has Mark Waugh's grubby paws all over it. He's had a hardon for Maddinson for years.

Yep. And when the hypocrisy between two selections is so bloody vast, it screams of despearation somewhere.

Cal Ferguson is told he hasn't been picked because he didnt make a run in the latest shield game and is dropped after one test.

Nic Maddinson does't make a run in the latest shield game and is picked because he has heaps of potential.

Pretty sure Cal is one of the best performed state batsmen of the last 4 years. God I ****ing hate Mark Waugh

Plus four Pakistanis, if we're counting parentage ;)

Seriously though, have to wonder if Australia's influx of Indian and Middle Eastern migrants will produce some international cricketers in 10-20 years time.

Did we choose Maddinson over Patterson due to their batting styles? From what I gather, Maddinson is more of a basher, and Patterson is more of a grafter (by comparison).
Maybe Patterson getting out twice playing back to spin (LBW Holland both innings) was a consideration given we're playing in spin friendly Adelaide?

Keep an eye out for a kid called Arjun Nair. A top order batsmen from ACT/NSW. Kid seems likely to be a very good player. Only 18 but showing plenty in grade cricket in NSW.

Career Shield average of 39.67 (18 centuries, 33 50s). His best seasons always seem to have coincided with someone else playing better (eg. 2014/15, when Voges had a monster year in the same WA side), or when there wasn't a spot available.

I know he opened the batting one game for the CAXI in the Matador Cup, but I thought he was a bowling all-rounder?

if head had been selected instead of maddison would there be the same outrage? are they viewed as being more or less on the same level?

interested to hear opinions.

I'd view them at both being on the same level yes. And that level is not test standard (or temperament).
