The upcoming week is going to be verrrrrry interesting.

For what it's worth, I don't think Clarke will be the horrible captain some are suggesting. The problem is his form doesn't warrant him being in the side.

I agree somewhat.... i think in terms of using bowlers and field positions etc he will be an excellent captain...

However my concern is more his bad form with the bat and moreso his perceived 'lack of ticker' when the chips are down... we've always been blessed with captains who will make the runs when the team really needs them... Clarke just doesn't seem in that mould.

Same could be said for for T20.

My problem is anointing someone so they could get it in their head that they're untouchable.

He's no Steve Waugh, or even a Ricky Ponting, but he's not a Marcus North either.

Let's just hope it doesn't get into a situation where he has to dig us out of a hole.

Tactically he should be fine.

Let's hope Clarke's test batting as captain follows his ODI batting as Captain:

Average when not captain - 43
Average when captain - 51

If we are to uses stats, then he should not be batting at #4 in the Test team. He got his average to over 50, then he moves to #4 and his average there is 20.09.

Hopefully he uses his captain's prerogative to move himself back to number five, then.

I hope so. Assuming Ponting comes back for the next Test series

3-Koala, 4-Punter, 5-Clarke (c), 6-MHussey, 7-Haddin (vc)

1. Marsh (should have come in before Hughes as actually in-form)
2. Hughes (deserves another chance on home deck)
3. Khawaja (is the future - needs to play now when confidence high)
4. Watson (more suited in the middle order)
5. Clarke (best position)
6. Hussey (bat after Clarke as better batting with the tail)
7. Haddin (c)
8. Smith
9. Johnson
10. Hauritz (though selectors will choose Beer)
11. Siddle

3 quicks/mediums & off/leg spinning options for Sydney. More balanced batting line-up - pressure off Smith being too high in the batting order & with Watson in the side as a genuine 5th bowling option in case Poms try to get at Smith's leggies.

If Punter was fit, I would have played him lower at 4-6 & replace Clarke in the line-up.

Wow! Just Johnson and Siddle... hopefully Johnson is having a 'good' day...

I don't know if the objection to Clarke has anything to do with his tactical skills as captain. More his personality and style of play.

Harsh time to come in as captain when the newspapers are running polls which suggest the vast majority of Aussie cricket fans don't want you though....with 3 kids in the top 6 and probably a grade standard spinner to work with. Plus MJ so that is 5 potential liabilities in one side. Ugh.

Looks like 6 of the top 7 will be NSWmen. I think last time that 6 batted together they were extremely lucky to fight out a draw against Victoria after getting smashed in the 1st innings.

bollinger or hauritz for harris, on their home ground. usman -> ponting. be interesting to see where he would start, younger players normally put down the order. would not be surprised to see hussey 3, clarke 4, ussy 5 or 6.

I dont really count him, already in the test side when he came here and has played two games for us. He plays for us but not really a new south welshman.

I think
3-Khawaja
4-Watson
5-Clarke
6-Hussey

is a much more balanced batting lineup than what we've seen(although expecting alot from a debutant batting at 3), but then it leaves the obvious problem with openers, with Hughes not exactly demanding confidence at this point and the other position then up for grabs (although, Katich and Katich as captain would be a good short term option, even if just for 12 months. Get a tough bastard up the top and get our side fighting again).

Lets move Hussey to open, its effectively what he has been doing all Ashes and there are no alternatives, let Watson go to 6 & Glory boy needs to stay at 4 if he is FAC

1 S Marsh
2 Hussey
3 Koala
4 Clark
5 Fat Boy from Tassie
6 Watson
7 Haddin
8 Hauritz
9 Siddle
10 George
11 Bollinger
