Unofficial Preview Changes for week one of Finals (Out: Madgen, Murphy, Ox : In: Treloar, Howe, Goldsack)

Fun Fact:

If the popularly predicted changes of Howe and Treloar in for Oxley and Murphy are made, our most likely back six will be: Maynard, Langdon, Crisp, Howe, Madgen and Greenwood.

Collectively this starting back six will have a higher over-all average height than the starting back six of the last two premiership sides.
Great stat. I’m assuming that’s because our “smalls” aren’t that small... we’re still really light on for size.

Interesting-but it all depends upon your opposition. We are going to struggle to cover Vardy, Kennedy and Darling if they bring the pill in quickly. Upfield pressure is the key. By the way, stats can lie. The two premiership sides may have had at least one big key position defender, but a couple of short flankers. We have a spread of players who are all within an inch or two of each other in height.

So Moore and Reid confirmed as no show.

Which leaves us Goldy off two games and two touches or we stick with Madgen (which will be a disaster IMHO).

I'll revert to my "last resort" move of Faz in and Checkers back. I can't believe that our selectors will sacrifice Madgen against another star forward after seeing him in recent weeks against ordinary opposition.
Faz is done and dusted. I think he is already daydreaming about how cool he will look in the navy blue. He looked slow and disinterested on Sunday.

Yeah - I pretty much agree , hence the "break glass" vibe of what I said. In the end I suspect you're right but (without knowing Fazzy boy) I also suspect that the prospect of playing in a premiership might get him focused on the Pies for a few weeks. It's difficult however you slice it now that we know we have no Reid, Moore, Dunn,Shaz.

Goldsack aside I couldn't think of a better way to get Mihocek back and keep the talent quota in the forward line up there. I just really fear what will happen to Madgen and am not convinced that we just make adjustements if he gets taken to the cleaners. It could be too late by then.

PS You could possibly run Treloar/Sidey through there in place of Checkers but I would prefer to replace Mihocek with someone who is a bit more of a lead/marking target . We already have the Swoop Squad.

I only saw parts of the VFL game, but what I saw suggested that the seconds play the same style as the seniors, and are vulnerable to the same chip and switch tactics that bring the seniors undone. Whoever we play on Saturday, the on field leaders will have to be prepared with methods to deal with this when it starts.
The heart of it for West Coast is the kicking of Hurn. He needs to be tagged out of it, or he will direct the ball too well too often for our upfield players to manage. Perhaps Greenwood. The problem is that this placement upsets our forward line a lot. None of our forwards are suitable for the role other than De Goey who can probably do anything, and we really don't want to lose him to a negating job. I don't have the answer, but the coaches have to find it.
The defenders have an awful task in front of them. They have somehow managed for weeks, indeed all year, but perhaps this will be one mountain too many. Howe will come in, but we will still be heavily overmatched for height and experience.

You might be surprised if there is a Langdon v Darling match. Langdons contested aerial ability is very good and may trouble him if wc bomb it in. Why would they bomb it in you say?

That all depends on what happens upfield, if we can beat em around the stoppages and stop their transition game they'll be forced to bomb it in. JK on the other hand is another problem and we'll obviously have to double or triple team him enter Howe.

Winning the midfield battle is always going to be the key.

That is why we lost to the Eagles at the G, as Grundy, Sidey and Pendles all had stinkers. We were already without Treloar and Sier injured himself.

Massive room for improvement in the middle...contrast that with the Weagles who won’t have Gaff.

We also have Maynard and Crisp, who could play on Darling if he is pushing up the ground like T.Lynch for the Crows...as Darling himself is only 191cm, and it is his athleticism that is his biggest weapon.

I’d back us in to go small and hurt them on the rebound, hopefully just like the Adelaide game...where we made them look slow as we ran the ball out of D50 with all the big blokes being unable to chase.

I'll be very concerned if Madgen plays. Id rather take a punt that Goldsack has enough kms in his legs.

Moore has had full training now for all of last week and yesterday but still not right ....Looks as though Murphy or Madgen play, but l think Madgen stays in because of Darling and Kennedy. He also can free up Howe to play his normal intercept role.

I agree.
Goldsack in for Madgen
Howe in for Oxley
Treloar in for Murphy

Watching this is getting me more excited...…...what a game...….three more sleeps :)

Didak in that game!

No Goldsack please. He's borderline best 22 (probably just outside in truth) even when he's fully match fit. Magden has played several in a row and should only be replaced by Moore (if fit) at this stage. It's amazing how crucial Dunn had become before getting hurt. He's a gun and is massively underappreciated.

Otherwise. Howe and Treloar in.
Murphy and one of Oxley or Mayne out. Probably Oxley.

I’d much prefer Goldsack to Moore. You can trust Goldy not to lose his bundle and single handedly lose us the game. Unfortunately I don’t have the same faith in Moore.

Goldy has resilience in spades while Darcy comes across as one of the least resilient players I can ever remember playing for us.

I would pick Treloar, Howe and Goldsack. Magden, Murphy and Oxley out.

If they have been fully training for at least a week they are good to go.

It happens to be a final game. “Saving them for next year/week” is not smart management. We are just as likely to have someone else injure themselves for next week’s game anyways.

It will be 5 weeks to the day on Saturday since he did the strain against Sydney.

5 weeks.

Other guys return in 3. 5 he's not ready. Makes no sense.

I hope we take Reid, Goldy, Moore and Treloar as emergencies if none of them are picked and I'd even fly Appleby over too.
Keeps the Eagles guessing and keeps the "Finals Group" together.

There was mention just after he did it that the club would look to change his running technique to avoid future hammy issues in much the same way the Hawks did with Cyril. Can't imagine that'd be achieved overnight so I'd assume the time is more about ensuring his long term future than anything about our immediate need.

I think the 26 announced tomorrow will be

IN: Howe; Treloar; Brown; Reid
OUT: -

Anyone omitted will travel as an emergency.
