Burton is a depth player now. I don't think he will ever fulfill his potential or maybe he already has and we have simply been overrating his ability for a while. He is a far cry from when he first came to Port Adelaide.
29 next year his career has quickly come and gone without ever finding another gear. Just another Tom Clurey.

He was more than just serviceable, he played well. He had 26 disposals, including 19 kicks at 77% disposal efficiency, 7 marks and 452 metres gained.
Rory Atkins got dropped with that stat line.

I must be in the minority but I thought 2 rucks worked ok. Thought we were just as efficient in the forward line, not any worse off than having Fin or Lord in there with the form they're in, but didn't lose momentum with a second stringer in the ruck. Plus our rucks stayed fresh all game. Not something I'd do against every team but be happy to go with it again this week vs Grundy.

So did everyone else.

Stop making it out like every single possession by everyone else is a hard ball get.

He has been poor for weeks - no doubt about it. But he was serviceable against Melbourne.
Agree he was serviceable but so was Liddy. Relative to his total possession count of 19 it’s proportionality higher than our others (bar Liddy).

Mead is 50 games and counting in and has shown little upside.

I'm backing Jackson & Moraes in for a full game this weekend... Liddy, Lorenz or Mead can be sub. Then we'll almost be there with the team, until Jones & Lukocious are back.
Especially since we have a bye in SANFL, Jackson and Moraes need to be in the best 22.

So over the Mead bashing.

His ceiling may be lower, but his consistency makes up for it.
One goal assist in the last quarter was a standout for me, and made me appreciate the leadership he provides to a forward line that lacks it.

Just my two cents worth: Persist with the two ruck experiment (no need to throw up your hands up in despair after just one outing with this combination)
If Aliir is out then in comes Logan Evans
If JHF is out (I bloody hope not) then Hugh Jackson comes in from the sub
Lorenz, Moraes or Boak to be the sub
Regarding Mead: Yes it’s time for him to stop playing like an apprentice as he’s now served his apprenticeship and it’s now time to be the real deal. I think he can as his old man’s genes must be swimming around inside of him!
The emergency to be Finlayson
I reckon BZT will be ok

I think we have to accept our forward situation.

To me just play Lord, at least there is a chance of gaining experience and upside. All other configurations are just stop gaps until we get our kpfs back from injury.
I was with you - but his last few games for the senior side were absolutely nothing games. Can't continue to reward that, so dropping him was the right move.

Rory Atkins got dropped with that stat line.
Different circumstances. I think when we recruited Atkins it was mainly to get the Houston deal through and that he was only ever going to be a "break glass" option in the AFL team but mainly to offer a bit of experience & leadership in the SANFL team. Atkins came in to the side against Freo when we were decimated with injuries and then lost his spot when we got a couple players back. Whereas contrary to popular belief Burton is classified as a best 23 player and actually hasn't been too bad since he came back into the side. He is also 2 years younger than Atkins.

His last 6 games, he's had: 16, 8, 5, 20, 11, 7 touches. How's the consistency.

He's 9th at the club for ave goal assists and 19th at the club for ave score involvements. How's the forward leadership.

Errol Gulden and Tom Papley remain on track for a return against Port Adelaide on Saturday. Joel Amartey will return from suspension.

With Wines likely to miss a few weeks, an opportunity presents for Liddy, Jackson, Lorenz to stake a claim in the midfield.

Bergman is gonna either play more midfield minutes or move back to the back if Aliir is ruled out.
