Good additions. Finlayson as tall (most ruck and forward) back up.

The Rat has been our SANFL best. Moraes and Bergs have doubts - makes sense to get a guy that can run. Equally I would prefer the Rat being the travelling emergency and missing both games than say, Lorenz.

And DBJ can play forward or back.

Nothing too crazy or left field. Actually pretty safe and sensible

^^

Smacks of lazy coaching to me

Worked once so lock it in forever

That went well for Finny in defence / Rat up forward etc. etc.

Better off keeping it as an option not a guarantee
He does this every time.

Can 100% guarantee if you see something work, Hinkley will go to it the next week.

The Hinkley criticism is 100% jumping the shark if we're referring to "something worked in our last game so he's trying it again in this game" as a negative, somehow. **** me we just need that bloke gone to lift the mood in this place if nothing else.

I recall David King making a comment about Butters, JHF and Rozee all being together in the midfield.

All A graders in the midfield, if you win the ball, you are kicking inside 50 to B graders, if you lose the midfield contest, you have B graders defending.

If Butters was in the midfield, JHF forward sometimes, and Rozee half back, you are spreading the quality all around the ground.

Also a ball winner (Wines) and defensive mid (Drew) don't have to be shoehorned somewhere else or put on the bench as much.

One of the signatures of the Hinkley era has been that he makes a change that works but because he doesn't actually understand why it worked he undoes the change. Persisting with something that worked is not in the Hinkley playbook.

Yeah Wines and Drew on the wing is ridiculous.

As he would say, spread the wealth and maximise your assets. Don't need all three in the middle everytime. Two of either Rozee, Butters or JHF at most . Playing JHF as a resting forward when not in the middle since he just plays crazy and even gets free kicks because the opposition is afraid of what he can do and Rozee down half-back predominately and have a pinch in the middle every now and then would do wonders.

Itll be DBJ for Cockring/Berry and thats it.

If bergman is a late out, dare I say Ratkins lmao. Might just keep Cockring/Berry both in if Berg drops.
If Bergman is a late out then it's just DBJ in for him. Play Burgoyne back, Boak continues on the wing with Berry as sub.

Although if it were totally up to me I'd play Berry on the wing and Boak as sub and try to get Berry involved in the game a bit more

It’s always about team balance, personnel available, and game style.

Before the emergence of Butters, Rozee and JHF, we were a really slow team, with average kickers, and forced to play a front half press game. Like Melbourne. Demons are trying to adapt to the modern game, but don’t have the players across the whole ground. They’re stuffed.

When AFL suddenly changed rules to open it up, standing on the mark, etc, I think we lost 5 games in a row at beginning of season, when Kenny tried to open up game plan. He then went back to the defensive front half press game, cause we didn’t have personnel.

Again this year, we tried opening it up, and lost the first few games, but this time, I think we finally have more speed across the team, good kickers, and there is a need for multiple good HBs to break lines, and generate that energy. Rozee going back is part of it. I think this year, it’s more about finding connection and balance, with a new game plan, and we don’t need to go back to the old ways. It’ll just take half a season to get fully into the swing.

Our side is bloody young. Almost a third of them haven’t played 25 games for PAFC, and theyre trying to adapt to a new game plan. Also our SANFL wooden spooning makes it an even bigger gap to develop in. People will bag our recruiters for being a bit lame on not bringing in key defender or forward in draft, but really they have done a pretty good job with limited draft capital (top 4 finishes) to turn over our list, and into one that can be competitive in the modern game.

The next 5 years the recruiting is the biggest challenge for us. This is where the Vic advantages will be at the biggest for the next 5 years. Vic teams who are on their way up, have a much greater pool of recruits to fill missing gaps in list with established players, role players and even securing free agents. Interstate teams really struggle. Qld and NSW teams get academy benefits so can go about building their list in a different way, Brisbane also got Charlie Cameron in the end using bonus picks for being at the bottom of the ladder. But Brisbane’s trading in of players has been excellent (and they’ve won a flag for it).

Port, Crows, Freo and West Coast have to get everything right to get a shot at it, and then hope they don’t play a Vic team on their home ground MCG.

Anyway, rant over, and I went a long way round to saying, yep we have holes in our list. Hopefully we can snag Wanganeen Milera. He is absolutely elite.

It has been a negative now for 12 years. Yes Rozee out of the middle might be the right call, but it doesn't change the fact this is how he always operates.

Connor Rozee was close to bog in 2018 sanfl grand final off the hbf under Josh Carr. Drafted and debuts under daddy. Played in the forward line then transitioning into a mid 2019 through to 2024. Now all of an sudden it's Kenny's masterstroke to put him back? Yeah. Sure thing. 🤔
