I love Taylor Garner. He has all the skills. His burst in the 2015 final vs Richmond was the full panoply: leaping back into a pack mark & goal; round the corner wrong foot drill onto the chest of a forward (bit of arse, but look at his balance, high and mighty, like all the best players); the full monty matrix conjure & Boomer goal assist.....then look at him dig in here - man, get in the way of that beast! He's a GTFOOTW player.

I see Thompson is getting slammed a lot around here this week. What about Taz? He was just as accountable.

The way the ball was being delivered, even SOS wouldn't have been able to scrag.

Yep, he's just about become BF Whipping Boy #1, has Scooter. I do believe he's overtaken Gibbo for that honour.

Touch of facebook about the changes thread tonight.

Quite the show, hey?

I would have thought that a more rational person would....oooh, I dunno....maybe give the committee a chance to actually establish some kind of selection pattern for the season before fast-forwarding straight to 'conniption'. Particularly when the first Round saw a clear willingness to blood noobs. But, hey, pitchfork-wielders gonna pitchfork-wield.

It's staggering just how carried away some people are getting with this shit. It's like Logan's ****ing Run around here at the moment.

The best part is, even as we speak you just know that the Footy Gods are arranging a BOG performance for one of this forum's favourite whipping boys on the weekend. Wonder who it will be.

I don't understand much of this post. Maybe I have a looser mentality than I should.

Hear ye ya, Hearts.

If my mentality was any looser I'd have to nickname it 'North's Back 6'.

Surely the only reason for any angst is that two taller defenders whose poor JLT form carried into round 1 stay, while Durdin's strong preseason is still unrewarded.

I think EVW probably not too far behind Durdin on that but agree with you.

EVW had a bit of a mare in JLT 3 but then I also saw our backline get demolished last week by 2 players... not easy being in a backline under significant pressure.

Haha, nice rant.

You 30 year members can laugh at BigFooty reputations, I'll just laugh at your poor spelling and inability to put a point across without raving like someone has shot your dog.
Wait, we have bf reputations?

We were all new here once. We just didn't all act like dicks.

Speak for yourself. When I look back at my old posts....

(I will not be fielding questions on where I sourced this image of Horace)

On a more serious note: who is actually on the selection committee? Brad, Jack, Tudor?

Scotts admitting that if he'd allowed Boomer and Drew to play on this year, then he would be forced to pick them every week essentially tells you why Scott Thompson is playing. Scotts does not have the gonads to tell any of the senior players that they need a stretch in the VFL.

I might be wrong but I think Brad thinks that's because they'd have the best chance of getting it done. The problem is, they don't. The worry is, that's what him (and the match committee) are paid to assess impartially.

Good to see young Jy getting another run I get the feeling that he will put on a bit of a show for us now that he has got that first game out of the way. As for the rest of the selections, pretty standard really, though I would have liked to see either of Ed or Durds get a game ( not both at the same time yet) and ando could probably have slotted in as well.

It is a concern that somehow the game has again gotten faster in 2017, therefore those that don't have the leg speed will get exposed more than ever this year.

However, I'm of the opinion that you can forgive one bad outing, its when it becomes a trend it needs to be addressed. Back the old blokes in & see what they can do. The writing will be on the wall if any of the whipping boys have another shocker.

Garner in. Great.

Cunners in. Great.

Daw in. Logical.

Mullett. Meh.

Could we have given Durds a crack? Maybe. Bloke did have 8 touches last weekend in the VFL. I wonder how the coaches saw his defensive performance? If he spudded it up in a VFL praccy does that mean any JLT form is void? I should think so. Happy to back in Taz, Thompson and Hansen against Geelong. The defence will likely be under the pump so going with the guys who have done it before ain't necessarily a bad thing.

B: Thompson - Tarrant - Williams
HB: McDonald - Hansen - Macmillan
C: Gibson - Cunnington - Higgins
HF: Garner - Brown - Thomas
F: Simpkin - Daw - Hrovat
R: Goldy - Ziebell - Dumont
Int: Gibson - Atley - Turner - Mullett

In: Cunnington - Garner - Daw - Mullett
Out: Preuss - Hibberd - Waite - Mountford

Good changes for the most part which will make us better. Not sure about Mullett over Mountford (who I think would be a great assett for midfield spread) but we need that extra option for the back flank. Would be happy for Dec to be given that opportunity however.

Preuss just ain't a forward at AFL level yet so will need to wait for Goldy's spot to open up. Hibberd didn't do too badly in his first hit out and will smash it in the VFL. Good kid.

Not a bad team at all. Hope Garns kills it. Love the kid.

I know it might be logical to bring in seasoned performers, but at some point you have to give AFL time - and not just one game - to young players and see if they can step up, even a little bit. I want to see all of the debutants play again at *least* this week. I can't imagine anyone's confidence can be managed well if it's 1 game and then "oh sorry, we've seen you at the highest level and we don't think you'll make it - see ya later". That might be the implied message, despite what the football department says to them IF any of them are not named this week.

There is no way that is the implied message. None whatsoever. Each of these guys earned their call up but they will know that they aren't close to the finished product yet. They will each get more games this year, as will Clarke, as will Durdin, and EVW, and Wagner, and Anderson and maybe even Zuhaar. If they drop their heads after being dropped after they got a taste then they are made of some pretty flimsy stuff. Which they don't appear to be (I actually think Preuss is made up of concrete for the most part, particulary his head, so he won't suffer much in the way of mental let down).

Plus there is a lot of form in doing this. Give them a look, get the debut out of the way, send them back to work on shit, make them more determined. Well, I think that's the philosophy anyway.

I'm sure it is.

I wonder if those who complain about it are the same who complain that early on in Scott's tenure young players weren't made to earn their stripes so it fostered a culture of complacency?

Reckon the amount of high impact run required at AFL level would have been a real eye opener for all four debutants last week. Those who do get chopped should take this to their VFL games and run the shit out of their opponents.

The main reason I think Durds should have been selected is for match ups. Harry Taylor is obviously playing forward for Geelong and by playing Thompson or Hansen on him will likely play him into superstar forward form. Selecting Durds and playing him on a forward yet to have solid form but with a name like Harry Taylor could have seen his confidence really improve if he did a solid job on him. I would have dropped Hansen this week for Durdin. I thought Thompson was worse last week but for match ups this week I think we might need him.

Good points but there is a continuum between gifting games and giving kids senior opportunity.

Denis always have debutantes a standard 2 game stretch and that would seem a good approach generally. One to catch their breath and a 2nd to try and perform with the benefit of some continuity at that level.

Thats all well and good but we have Cunners and Garner to get into the team. I'd rather look to win the game with Garner and Cunners to come in over playing guys who we know aren't there yet but who will have had a taste.
