Changes: Round 8 Vs Richmond

It would be great to see what guys like North, Bewley and Dixon could do at AFL level but who should step aside to let that happen? As a consequence of having a lot of young talent on our list, we have a bunch of guys who will have to force their way into the team. Giro and Crowden did enough last year to suggest they might make it but they haven't got a look in.

Does Logue have to run around at Peel until someone gets injured or has a couple of shockers? Does it make sense to have a #8 draft pick (or #2 or #5) who's fit playing in the WAFL? Should Sandi come straight in if he's fit? What happens if Harley kicks 15 goals in three games at Peel but we're on a winning streak averaging 100 points a game?

Is our objective right now to win as many games as possible, or are we still developing players and seeing who fits? The answers depend on your perspective of what we need to get out of this season.

I fully understand supporters wanting to see how guys go at AFL level, and the thinking behind wanting certain players to play at WAFL level to improve parts of their game or build confidence. Personally I wouldn't send Cerra or Brayshaw back to the WAFL unless I thought their confidence was down and they needed to get their hands on the ball. Maybe Cam Mac would benefit from that. A fit Logue is best 22 for me based on his preseason form but who makes way for him?

I'm just an outsider looking in but given how we're travelling so far this year I'm confident that the match committee will get it right more often than not.

I do think Logue probably has to wait for an opening OR force his way in with irresistible form. I think Blakely has had to do that too. Both these guys have a strong argument as best 22, so they will find their way in sooner rather than later.

Doesn't have to be like for like, but yeah I think they have had quite a while out and need to show form while the team is for the larger part also performing. We have quite a bit of positional flexibility now so them coming in won't be difficult to achieve. Blakely will be in this week.

These are good things, and the management should be looking at trying to build selection stability.

Is anyone else concerned that Pearce has been pumped up as the best defender this year, and Lynch is being hammered as a liability, in the week they play on each other?

Yeah, this matchup could be the canary in the coal mine metaphor for our season in general..we lose to a banged up Richmond at home and all of a sudden our optimism of finals is dented significantly.

I expect Brayshaw to develop and improve with a potential ceiling of Cotchin/Jobe Watson. Of course, Cotchin now has Watson’s Brownlow, so that’s a bloody big ceiling! But if his kicking doesn’t improve his ceiling is Conca/Josh Carr. Which is probably acceptable, but below my expectations of a pick 2.

I think he can be a lot better than Conca, even with kicking flaws. Plenty of top players (past and present) are poor kicks, although most of them tend to be massive bulls. O'Meara, Shiel and Prestia ... a few shorter players who were also drafted very high and dodgy kicks.

It is also worth noting that the other options like Dow, LDU and Stephenson also have questionable kicks. Stephenson can often kick straight enough at goal (often from close range, and at a much bigger target than hitting a lead) that he can get away with it. Cerra is the clear standout from the options we had. I think we'd be talking about poor kicking no matter who else we drafted.

I haven't taken much notice of Dow but I was listening to the radio broadcast of Carlton v North on the weekend and David Parkin was absolutely tearing into him, Parkin is usually measured in his comments so for him to be so negative about a second year player surprised me, the way he was talking he is not up to scratch.

how's things fremantle?
Its all fine and dandy....
We have this odd situation whereby we have to many players to choose from......Its new to us........We dont quite know what to do with them all, bar asking the AFL to increase the interchange to 8 players :)
Whats your thoughts...Conca out?? ;)

that’s very good to hear. im never quite sure where freo are on my terry wallace premiership clock. breaky bongs or beer o’clock? but from the outside looking in I think you should definitely rest david mundy, it’s mother’s day and he deserves a well earned day off. or at least bench him for the last 2 minutes so we can throw flowers at him

Whilst this would be nice for David, I believe he would rather play that last minute or so....hopefully however, his accurate goal kicking wont be required this time :)

Did you see us play GC last year? Pearce well and truly had his measure.

Tom Lynch is decent speed agility wise for a guy his size; hes more mobile than most 200cm key defenders who tend to mostly be punch it out of bounds types. But AP could be a revolutionary key back with his elite speed and size. So theres that

To hear that from Parkin is quite surprising. I got free tickets to that game and as harsh as it sounds, he isn't exactly wrong. They're only young and I like to give kids time, but I'll be very surprised if O'Brien justifies a top 10 pick. Dow is inexperienced and it really shows, his kicking is poor, his decision making is poor and he dropped an easy mark because he thought contact was coming, which the Carlton fans noticed. If he can burst from packs, he'll be good, if he can't then he'll just be an ok player.

SPS and Fisher can play.

The Lynch match up will be a great contest, but this will not determine the game. We should be able to stifle their delivery. The main concern is Martin having a blinder. If he has a great game, then it is every chance that Lynch will get good delivery. They rely on their small forwards a lot and make no mistake although they have 3 players out - they have most 19 of their starting 22 available - if Rioli is fit.

This is a good test. It is somewhat season defining as we are favourites to win this game. We win this, we are on the right path to make the 8, we lose and we are rebuilding.

I am not sure how good we actually are. Considering last year against the tigers in round 7 we lost 33-110, at the MCG - losing to Adelaide in Adelaide by 17 points is not so bad - especially considering we could have won it. If we go in tall at home, and we win then that solves part of our puzzle going forward at home. On the road - we need to have a look later.

For now, team line ups will be very interesting - but I do think if we try and match them at the mosquito squad game plan we will lose. THey have no option to run with that. We need to play our game and our brand of footy and win with it. Otherwise it is still a work in progress.

Richmond have alot more than 3 out of their B22.

Riewoldt
Rance
Cotchin
Grigg
Graham
Short
Vlastuin (50/50)
Rioli (50/50)
Astbury (50/50)

They will most likely have 7-8 out of their Best 22.

Grigg
Graham
Short
Vlastuin (50/50)
Astbury (50/50)

These guys cannot get a game - Vlastuin and Grigg maybe. Would you put them in our team? I would say none of them would get a game for us. Maybe I over-rate our list.

Just to extend on that - they have Stack, Baker, and Bolton and others - they have overtaken these guys - yeah Short will be close but Graham is done. Grigg, Vlastuin and Astbury - where the hell would they fit in at Freo let alone any other team - even Richmond would struggle without injuries to place them - I suspect now they have the problem of finding the new best 22. I think Richmond are following the Bulldogs - win a flag, then back to the drawing board.

Until McCarthy improves his ability to half contests, or quickens up a bit (For leads but also defensive pressure), he might just be too much of a bad-at-nothing, good-at-nothing type. Looks good when we're up and about and using the ball well because his forward craft is exceptional, but he has a bit of a way to go in these aspects. Key-forwards (even 3rd talls) shouldn't get outmarked and he's not defensively great enough to play a 4th tall.
Looks like this year he may be a guy that goes well when we're doing well but struggles otherwise, however his accuracy in front of goal and field kicking mean he can still have an impact. Probably has to be the first to go of the KPF's until he starts holding some parks for peel. (Has to learn a brand that stands up in big-moments and contested games). For this reason Im sticking with my earlier changes -
Out - Cam and Trav
In - Darcy and Blakely
