Changes v Melbourne

Been good apparently, listed in the Royals best players last 2 weeks.
May need some more fitness as was injured for a while.
Hill has been ok but with Jk,Jd,Nic Nat in the forward line do we need another leading/ marking forward?
A good goal sneak may be the icing on our cake next few years so let's find out if that is Newman or do we trade for one?
As confident as I am in beating Melbourne, the season has shown you just cannot take too many chances. I would only like one change. Scooter out, Hutch in as he seems to be doing well also.
If Lecca needs a break, then maybe Newman.
Welcome to the Bigfooty mad house by the way! :D

Cheers Double the fist,
Mad keen Eagle since their inception.always read all the posts on here so I thought might as well contribute.

I understand the backlash on Selwood after his first couple of games but as he acclimatises to AFL again and our improved game style, he'll become an asset and is an absolute must for a finals tilt.

OUT: Selwood, Sinclair
IN: Butler, Lycett

Butler in for Selwood allows Yeo to play more midfield time.
Didnt think Sinclair offered us much last night, apart from relieving Nic Nat in the ruck
I'm a bit surprised Sinclair hasn't been copping it on here, the sooner Lycett finds some form the better.
His kicking last week against the Bombers would have got him dragged in a C grade amatuer game.
Didn't have many kicks against the Tigers so it wasn't as noticable but his decision making and excecution when kicking is deplorable.

Newman had a finger injury so would have still been able to do all the running required to maintain a fitness base. Ball handling might have been a bit rusty though

That said I think hill is playing well enough to keep his spot at the moment. Newman just needs to keep performing at WAFL level so if a spot does open up he's ready to jump in and take his chance

nima is to gaff as domo is to priddis

Might be part of some weird anti leftie cult

hey man, im a lefty myself:) nothing personal, its just my take on his game and my opinion of him footy whise before i class him as a star. in any sport lie footy, soccer or basketball, once you are one sided, forget about ever being considered a star. period. unless you are some sort of a freak like messi.i have high expectations, my bad:)

Selwood has a spot in our side if he is tagging

However we don't seem to be playing one this year - rather a team defence focus

In which case it is hard to find a spot for him

Nervous about the Melbourne game - wet humid conditions can throw up some odd outcomes, and then be zapped for the game the following week

Wet humid conditions? Wrong season! We would have to hang in Darwin for about 3 months to see a drop of rain.

No rain but can be a lot of dew

And whilst it won't be humid by Darwin standards it will still be more humid than the players are used to

Good thing is that Adelaide come off a 6 day break when they play us (compared to our 7), will probably nullify any sort of issues we have playing the week before in muggy conditions.

The fine dew or humidity or whatever the reason makes the ball like a bar of soap and know from North Pilbara night games this time of year the yellow ball can be a nightmare to hold on to.

He'd struggle in the WAFL at the moment such is his form.

Next year we will have Cavka, Waterman, Newman and hopefully Maginness all legitimately pushing for another spot in the midfield. Going to be interesting seeing how his management unfolds.

absolutely i am a critic based on what i have seen from gaff when he is not getting tagged when he is not getting 30 touches, when coaches somehow decide to not tag him. but hey, when we play swans and freo then you will see how gaff will handle it. you are right about Gaff being important to our game plan, i agree 100%. he is one piece of a puzzle. but dont say he is star, cuz to me i expect more from a star. to me star is an all rounded player, for starters he can kick both foot ( sam mitchell, pendelbury or kiren jack or luke parker to name a few). he can lay proper tackles( most elite teams have unreal tacklers), he can shrug off a tackle( pendulbury and mitchell). now you might say he is only 22. thats no excuse, he has been in the system long enough to work on that. his avg tackling has gone up from 2 to 3. not good enough to be labelled a star. i like him for what he brings but believe me if you sit down and watch the games and analyse them he is not tough when t comes to 50-50 balls. once he gets tagged he does struggle, mind you he did cost us against north game if you watch the replay. its all happy days right now and im not complaining, but i will have to see him do it against teams who tag him and see some grunt and toughness to say he is a star category. once again I'M NOT BASHING HIM, ALL IM SAYING IS ITS IMMATURE TO CALL HIM A STAR WHERE HE HAS CLEARLY GOT A LONG WAY TO GO. I hope he does that, why not:)

He is an outside running wingman currently leading the league in uncontested possessions. He is basically the best in the league at what he is in the team to do. Not sure how you can ask any more than that.

Yeah it's a bit like complaining that Naitanui needs to take more uncontested marks to be elite.

Put it this way when port had an impressive running game going last year they were one Gaff off making a premiership !!

re: Gaff

Why do so many people pick on the things a player doesn't do - and try to make out as if it's the most important part of their game?
So he doesn't tackle? Good - it means he's waiting on the outside of the pack to be the release player.

You have 5 players all lay a tackle on 1 guy, and you're being inefficient.

Kicking on his right - yes this is needed, but there are a number of players I'd consider stars who are one-footed, kicking well off his right would not make him a star, it'd make him elite. His precision kicking was on show Friday night, he's got some good penetration on his kicks, and for mine, his left is so good that it makes up for being one-footed.

Gaff is not a complete footballer, he has deficiencies and weaknesses, but for the role he plays, on current form, he's probably the best wingman in the league, or at least the equal of Smith/Ellis.
