Changes v Melbourne

Well I'm looking forward to the boys coming up here next weekend. A world first for me watching two Eagles games in a row, flew down to Melbourne last week.:)

As an update the weather here is perfect dry season. Currently 25 degree at 9.30 am and getting nice a cool (freezing for us locals:D) overnight, down to 18-20. Low to no humidity so great dry weather footy conditions.

Previously its been a bit grease after dark but it pretty damn good this weekend. Our tall forwards should have a great night out. Much better than playing in damp winter conditions down south.:thumbsu:
Yeah good news ...I'd been to Darwin a few times and it was humid but that was later in the year around September and went once in April also.

What is the ground like? Is it big or small oval

Simmo confirmed we've got a full team to choose from.

Means only 3 of Selwood, Sheed, Butler, Rosa and Duggan will make the 21.

Will be the toughest decision the MC have made in a while.
I'd like to see Sheed and Duggan play a full game. They just had a week off and have earnt their spot.
Rosa sub.
Butler plain unlucky. He seems to have been replaced by Ellis already and they are very similar players.
He also deserves a spot based on form this year.

Been to a few games of footy at Marrara years ago(lived in Malak for 11yrs), also saw ACDC perform there, it's a small ground, may be no breeze at all or just a very light wind.

Just watched tonight's episode of On The Coach (Foxtel ch 504) where Gerard Healy gave his insights into the WCE team defence. He has called it the Weagles Web and gave insights into how it works. Good analysis and worth watching if you have Foxtel.

Given that, it may help explain what changes are likely to be made. Based on what I saw, I believe the backline will be unchanged with the exception of possibly Butler coming back.

He's also more versatile.

I'm not a big Sam Butler fan but he's been pretty good this season. With Yeo, Duggan and Sheed doing good work in the middle Selwood just seems like a bit of a square peg at the minute.
We need the extra defender ...he fills that role well

Prefer ellis.
Butler goes missing when it counts and causes turnovers when under pressure imo.
So far in 2015 Butler has been there each week and delivered consistently. Ellis has had 1 good game but his first game back was a little suspect.

In the thread " who you didnt rate now impresses you " butler was praised by many , for good reason the white elephant dung in the room is Selwood . Dont care who is picked I believe Selwood is not deserving and should tidy his skills at wafl level.

Probably break that down a bit further

With Hurn, Schofield, Sheppard, Wellingham, McGovern, Ellis in the back 6 - we only need one other defender at most

I think Butler deserves that role and Rosa who filled in for him goes out.

That leaves Selwood, Duggan and Sheed fighting for two spots (inc the sub). Shannon Hurn came out and said that our team defence doesn't really allow a tagger. If that is the case - then personally I don't see a role for Selwood. As a run-with player, he has shown he is very pointy end in the league. But as a ball winning mid - he is significantly down the food chain. I have a feeling Simmo will stick with him liking the extra hard body and tackling. So I think Duggan will miss and Selwood sub

I agree. If I had to choose between selwood and butler then butler is the obvious choice right now.

If that's the case we are one player away from vanilla midfield that might start losing games. Rosa for sheed. If that happens and we don't play duggan or sheed we have returned to the dark side as I think one of the reasons we have done well is our young players.

The formation and line up that we have traditionally seen listed is defunct and tells you little about who is playing where. After watching "On The Couch" last night, I have tried to use the Weagles Web (as described by Gerard Healy) to have a new way of listing the team that I see for Melbourne:-

Tall Defenders: Schofield McGovern
Defensive Line of 5: Butler Sheppard Wellingham Hurn Ellis

Outside Mids: Gaff, Masten
Centre 4: Naitanui Yeo Shuey Priddis

Forward Line: LeCras Hill Cripps
Tall Forwards: Kennedy Darling

Interchange (T M M): Sinclair Sheed Rosa
Sub: Selwood (prefer to see Duggan here but Scooter seems to be preferred)

There's going to be 3 or 4 players genuinely unlucky not to be playing

And with nearly a full squad available (waters, Mckenzie, brown, tunbridge, mcginnity, lamb the only ours), there's going to be a few playing ressies for East Perth as well

I think one of the reasons the young guys have done well is, apart from their skills, they have not had to erase Woosha's game plan from their memories. The only game plan they know is Simmo's, this surely means that they follow structures and direction better. Some of the older guys, those that have come back from injury (Selwood & Rosa), still play the bomb it long & hope style of game. If they get games before the kids I reckon it's because Simmo sees an upside once they are used to his tactics. In saying all of this I'd prefer we played the kids and build to a flag next season!

Isn't the whole point of WAFL alignment to avoid players having to learn the gameplan in the AFL?

Alignment is only partially working. EP are still wanting to be a mother and not a surrogate mother. EP are a nag of a club and may be getting a little ahead of themselves because they are carrying an artificially planted thoroughbred!

Only seen a couple of EP matches and their defensive structures are a long way off what we see played by the Eagles. To me it feels like a compromise with EP. We get some alignment but the EP boys who came through the system together still look like they want to kick to their mates and not the Eagles ring-ins.

The word vanilla means shit to me to be honest

Luke Hodge would be the epitome of vanilla at the moment

The main improvement I have seen from our side is the ability to cleanly collect loose ball under pressure and deliver it to advantage by hand to someone under less pressure

I don't care if they are vanilla, chocolate or neopolitan - if they can add to the gamestyle - then so be it.

Simmo said a couple of things on the radio yesterday. Duggan has done nothing wrong to warrant not being played this weekend. About 40 blokes trained and the kids who stepped up to get us to this point shouldnt be automatically cast out for seniors with runs on the board. Im thinking that is him breaking the ice for a few seniors that they might find themselves playing in the WAFL if the new kids on the block are bringing more to the side.
