I'd bring in Cockatoo for Rohan... His the only one that can play that role as a marking pressure forward. Even if he's slightly underdone, he looked good with his tackling.

Parsons deserves another game.
BOG in VFL, and was good enough in his Swans game.

The club has already advised it's only VFL for at least a few more weeks, and potentially 4 more weeks

He's very underdone for AFL level, and when you consider he seemed to be more midfield than forward in the VFL - he doesn't seem to be in line to play a marking pressure forward role

I’m going to be a wreck if they throw him into the finals after a few VFL games

Another injury will destroy any confident for next year imo

I know some here have said to bring him in for the Calton match, but doing so forces him to have the pre-finals bye off.

If he is to be considered for the seniors this year, I'd rather he play VFL through to their first week of their finals which is another 4 weeks at that level - it means continuity of games which feels like it would be better for him then a week off after a couple of full games that follow a couple of partial games.

If he's needing week off only a month into playing then he probably shouldn't be considered for senior selection this year

Why would that be? Is this min amount of games 4 to be eligible for VFL finals?

Why would that be? Is this min amount of games 4 to be eligible for VFL finals?

The first week of VFL finals falls on the AFL bye weekend, so is covered by the following VFL eligibility rule:

(g) Despite any other provision in Rule 20, in circumstances where:
(i) an AFL Club is participating in the AFL Finals Series, but is not playing on the weekend of the AFL bye weekend after the final round of the AFL home and away season; and
(ii) the AFL Club’s VFL team is playing on that weekend,
any AFL listed player who did not play in the AFL Club’s AFL team in the final round of the AFL home and away season will be eligible to play in the Club’s VFL team in the AFL bye round after the final round of the AFL home and away season.

So any player who lines up for their AFL club in round 23 is ineligible to play in the first week of VFL finals - that one seems to be to somewhat counter resting senior players from AFL duties in round 23, giving the next tier of players an opportunity because that next tier has to rest the next week.

VFL finals eligibility can get confusing - but these 2 clauses could also have an impact on Cockatoo & VFL finals depending on how the senior side goes:

(b) A Player who has played in an AFL Home and Away Match after 1 July in the relevant season will be ineligible to play in VFL Senior Grade Finals Series Matches unless that Player has played in a combined total of at least six (6) VFL Senior Grade Home and Away Matches in the same season.

(c) Despite any other provision of this Rule 20, but subject to Rule 20(d), where a Club has both its AFL and VFL Senior Teams engaged on the same weekend, any Player may be selected to play in the VFL Senior Team so long as that Player has played in at least one AFL or VFL Senior Grade Home and Away Match in that relevant season.

As long as our senior guys are still playing finals, players who meet VFL finals eligibility will be fine - but say our senior side is knocked out early (we lose our next 4 games or go out straight sets etc) while our VFL side makes the GF, it would mean that if Cockatoo plays against Carlton he would then be ineligible to play VFL finals once the senior side is knocked out.

I'm thinking that the MC will be asking themselves over the next few weeks if Cockatoo (in the long term) will benefit more from playing out the year in the VFL versus seeing if he's ready to step up to the next level (especially if we have the team settled with strong line-up against Carlton). There's almost more benefit for not bringing him in until the first week of finals - just gives more flexibility with how they can play Cockatoo during September

Well that sucks

Geelong are a 0% chance of losing this week (this coming from someone that was 50/50 at best about the Cats chance of winning against Freo). There will be either an emphatic response, or at worst a workmanlike win. These are the two scenarios for matches played at KP, following a bad loss, when Geelong are in the top 4 over the past 12 years.

The only chance we will find out anything at all pre-finals will be the Brisbane match at the Gabba. This one is about finding confidence and form before that test.

Call me crazy but if we beat North this week, and I agree with what you’re saying, I think we’ll be a really good chance to beat the Lions the following week.

Any hint of complacency will be well and truly gone and they’ll be on an 8 game win streak (they play GC this week - guaranteed four points) and in many ways due a loss.

Would love to see Chook play... The notion he needs to work on his spreading from the contest annoys the s**t out of me, he is a contested ball winner with elite hands in close.. He will make the balance of our midfield change dramatically and instead of having Guth kicking the ball off the ground it can be feed out to Kelly or Danger on the burst..
Instant offence, quicker ball movement and our fwd line more space and room to move.

No brainer
The minutes of general uncontested free flowing play in a game are greater than actual moments of rucking contests where Constable does his best work.

He may excel in these few moments - and even then he’s not getting 10 clearances, it’s only 5 or so a game, however the rest of the time, he’s not providing defensive or offensive spread as compared to other players who cover the ground better.

If you’re not in the right place on the field when your team or their team have the ball, then the opposition will take advantage of that and it will create headaches for your own team in their positioning. It is fairly fine tuned and this is how we create turnovers OR overlap and break through other teams zones.

There’s a reason for that. Henderson has been crowded out by Blicavs as they play similar roles. Kolo plays more on the mediums and has made a great fist of it. Against most teams there’s no matchup for Henderson with Blicavs and Taylor there where as Kolo can play on a De Goey or Stringer type.
I remember the final last year where Petracca(?) bear the 50m line on the boundary turned Henderson inside out and left him sitting on the ground as he ran towards goal.

Yeah I think Lions would start favourites but they are generally having fairly even contests even at the Gabba. It will be a good test to see if this famous HTL has some form of merit or whether the malaise is set to continue.

The one tiny silver lining of the losses lately have been that they are against mediocre teams that shouldn't be playing finals. Complacency is rotten of course but bouncing back this week and following up with a meritorious win against the Lions would get some belief back before finals.

The last thing the Saints need is another slow inside mid, not sure where the Constable link came from but I find that one hard to understand.
The whole link is that Constable is friends with Max King

An article on Constable early in the season had him talking about spending time over summer with Andrew Brayshaw, working on things like repeat sprints and acceleration for spreading from contests

Actually seems like he's friends all with whole Brayshaw family (just found this when checking if it was Andy)

*No, the way Andy Brayshaw and older brothers Angus and Hamish spend Christmas Day is by going down to their local park in Sandringham, marking out 100 metres, and running the distance 100 times. They have 30 seconds to run each 100, with 30 seconds rest in between each run.

Of course being a Brayshaw family event, it should come as no surprise that when the brothers go for it again this Christmas, Charlie Constable will be there.

Constable is also set to be drafted, and to put it mildly, he and Andy have a bromance going on. In Charlie's words, the pair "do everything together". And that's not just in a football sense, although the pair have played together at Haileybury College, Sandringham Dragons and Vic Metro.*

That suggests closer with Andy than King - I'm waiting for him to be linked with a move to Freo for one of the Hill brothers

The whole article about Constable & Abbott to St Kilda was a nothing article - biggest thing was the apparent agreement between Geelong & Abbott to trade him if a suitable deal presented itself, but no actual comments from any player or club mentioned in the article

I'd bring Narkle in and maybe for Atkins but I'd shuffle the magnets and have Narkle predominately in the midfield.
He's a midfielder. He's not a forward.

For me, Joel Selwood and Atkins would be an easy swap to make (Atkins omitted). Selwood would provide similar pressure in the forward line.

One of Guthrie or Parsons out to the wing where Selwood was playing.

Narkle comes in and takes over Guthrie’s midfield role.

If Parsons comes into the team on the wing, then it’s one of either Guthrie, Scott Selwood or Constable in the team in the midfield.

Stanley takes Smith’s spot.

Parfitt and Menegola fight for the forward/midfield role.

Rohan’s spot after his injury recovery should be challenged by Cockatoo.

MOC takes Bews’ role.

Call me even crazier, but if we lose to North, we're probably even a better chance to beat Brisbane - such is the head-scratching, upside down, unpredictable, illogical, hair-losing, infuriating, and sometimes pleasantly surprising but usually heart-breaking nature of this current team.

There is no Constable link to anyone. This is classic manager fodder talking his client’s book. “My boy wants more game time and is open to trade if he doesn’t get it.” Inflates value and pressures match committee.
