People are going to scoff at this... and maybe rightly so, i don't even know if i buy it...
BUT
From a someone that has proven to be on the money with info for me previously

the players have legit been getting absolutely flogged on the track, the were cooked in Perth, to the point of vomiting after the sessions they were doing that week

would explain why they looked to just run out of gas/effort after the first quarter (if true), apparently heavy training has finished, look for a different look this week obviously the proof and if there is truth in this.. will be in the pudding

I really, really hope you're right.

It would align with what the coach said last night:

“We’re really confident that we're working on some things that we’ll see come through in the next couple of weeks, and we’ll be playing good footy when it really counts.”

It’s all fluff. Only Geelong use this heavy training loads propaganda!
Actually, I haven't heard one official person from Geelong say the drop off in form is due to the training load. Scotty or the players have never used it as an excuse.

On The Couch last night they showed some stats (the premiership ones) comparing the WCE to this time last year and where they're at this year to show just how good the coasters are travelling right now. But this time last year they were not too dissimilar to what we are at the moment, and they went on to win the flag. I think we need to let things play out before we judge what's happening. Lyon was right the other day talking about the week to week noise that comes with every result, rather than people looking at the big picture.

If we bring Jack Steven in,let alone trade Constable out we have rocks in our heads.
Oh because we have an elite midfield that gets the ball inside 50 more than 40 times most weeks.

Selwood and Duncan aren't on ballers anymore. We currently roll with Stanley, Danger, Kelly, Guthrie. With Kelly gone we look really solid in there.

Full disclosure, i often find the HTL as a cop out, but the person who told me this was adamant about it, and I thought it may be of interest to some, would potentially marry up with Scott saying they are doing things to set up for the end of the year. 🤷‍♂️
All that effort will be completely wasted if we don't finish top 2 though. We need to be playing at a level where we are actually, you know, wininng.:(

I guess we have one more loss buffer for top 2- on the condition we beat Brisbane away.

I hope i was pretty clear in my comment that I didn't know if it was right, so like you i am just really really hoping it is the case as well... I guess time will tell

nonsense, Geelong don't actually use it at all

The supporters use it

SPOLIER ALERT.. the spoilers of all clubs that have a dip in performance or unexpected losses use it as well

I'm happy to subscribe to this theory....how else can you rationalise such a dramatic fall in form and fortunes. For me Danger is the litmus. He's usually good for 25 possessions, but 16 on Saturday.....

have to be honest the biggest thing that raised my eyebrows was someone mentioned repeat sprint numbers the other way... there is no other excuse for that other than work rate..

Which does support the HTL/self preservation mode.
My only issue if this is true, is how do they know it's as simple as flicking the switch come finals?
What if we go into week 1 against a fired up team and can't hit top gear quickly enough?
If it works and we win the flag the MC will rightly be hailed as geniuses, if not... well they may be risking their jobs.

the proof will be in the pudding i guess...
Either we look more energetic going forward and work harder....

Or it is all just excuses and nonsense

Steven is 30 next year with off field issues,we can find someone who is a better fit.
Simple.

For those subscribing to this heavy training load business, is there a reason the club would actually do this to the players? And what are the sources for these claims?

Most teams that have all but cemented a top 4/8 spot tend to do this, the idea is you get kms into the players now, you get them at peak fitness so that when finals comes along you can taper off, reduce the workload from training and concentrate purely on recovery throughout the week. The result would be a more fit and physically firing team come finals without having to worry about getting work into them during the finals.
We have done it several times since 2009 (including 2009), along with most sides.
Thats the theory anyway, if you subscribe to it, the frustrating thing for us is we won't know the results until.. well we see the results.

I would love to come back on this board after we've won the GF and say; "**** I was wrong, Chris Scott and his coaching staff knew exactly what they were doing and little plebs like me need to back off and let the professionals handle things, well done the mighty Cats!"

....We'll see.

The Jack Stevens boat has sailed, he won't be coming to Geelong anytime soon except as an opposition player.
He wants Geelong
He was an A grader, runs both ways.
Geelong wants him- at the right price I hope.
