It really has become a real selection issue, do we keep making 5 or 6 changes each week which is not great.

I think the return of our long term injured star player who aren't performing and clearly underdone is the main problem, particularly in the midfield.

In the game last night Yeo, 18, Shuey 16 attended the most CBA's. Kelly the next with 14. Yeo and Shuey who have missed most of the season combined for a total of 35 disposals.

So at the selection table what is solution

Perhaps Yeo to Half Back
We won the clearances comfortably and had plenty of i50s so not sure thos guys are to blame.

Leave the team as is, need to lose again to drop down the ladder = better draft picks, more time off to get a new game plan and get fitter!

Sheed and Gaff attending less centre bounces is something we’ve all wanted to see I think. We split the centre clearances 10-10 and won the overall clearances 43-34. The problem begins when the ball moves away from the stoppage. We lost that new buzz-stat “post-clearance contested possessions” 99-80, and only managed to lay 48 tackles for the game. Our players also ran a combined 4.2km less than the Roos players. That all suggests to me that we’re either not fit enough or not working hard enough, or a little of both.

Also, I brought up on the live podcast last week that our record with the Kelly-Shuey-Yeo combination is terrible, especially compared with the record when Kelly is paired with one but not both of Shuey & Yeo.

When all three have played we’re now 5 wins from 11 games, with a percentage below 85. When two play, we’re 6 from 8 (not counting the Bombers game where Kelly was injured before halftime).

This is a good point and something I raised before the injured duo returned around the bye. Is it continuity and cohesion holding them back or a touch of GWS syndrome (too much talent, leave it to someone else to do the work)?

Yeo seems the accountable one. I believe he can play with either Shuey or TK. And that's a problem in itself as he is also the most versatile and would be the easiest to move to another position.

At a rough glance for now, two of the outs need to come from senior players - Gov, Darling, Sheed, Gaff, Kelly or Ryan. Statement selections.

The way I see it;
Gov - could get replaced by Edwards and not diminish us (defense was better before Govs return) :heavycheck:
Darling - provides good pressure even when well down on form. No-one better to replace with :heavymultiply:
Sheed - Getting lots of footy but yep, defensively poor... "um" and "ah" but I'd keep:heavymultiply:
Kelly - Could swap with West no loss :heavycheck:
Gaff - playing ok but not great - no one better to replace with :heavymultiply:
Ryan - two brilliant goals in a minute should have iced the game. Stays :heavymultiply::heavymultiply:
Cripps - cooked. Gifted games all year out of a false sense there's no one to replace him. For the love of god swing Sheed forward if needs be and bring the accountable Hutching's in. :heavycheck:

In summary if you are looking at big names to drop the ones I'd go with are out of Gov, Kelly or Cripps.

Almost everyone wants West (who wasn't even on the list 2 months ago) to play against Adelaide. Is this is a positive or a negative for the list management\recruiting team? Really confused.

I think West is a replacement /correction for the Ainsworth failed pick(delist) and O`neill age bracket , even though O`neill appears to be working his butt off on his deficiencies and will possibly make the grade ..

Dom Sheed is a definite out for me. Needs to learn how to play football again. Was struggling to even rove the ball from hitouts, very reactionary and was involved in numerous turnovers that resulted in NM goals. Love him after 2018 but he needs a big reset

Sheed just chases stats now , demands the ball in bad positions just so he can blind kick it around the corner ..

I don't disagree with most of what you are saying.

I would NOT however bring in Hutchings for Cripps. I'd bring in LEdwards from the sub bench, Trew (even though he's been quieter than earlier in the WAFL) who might actually step up big time, or XON, or any of the young guys really. Hutch to me falls into the 'had his day' group and 'won't be around for the next push' group and 'just filling a spot' group.
For those players in those groups who are at best fringe and have ready alternatives I just wouldn't bother any more.
What's the point of giving Vardy a game over Williams or even Jamieson? Sure, he's not ready, but he couldn't be worse. A couple of games for Jamo against a weaker ruck setup would be worth 10 WAFL games in development.
What does giving Hutch a game at the expense of a young guy actually give us? Does a 25 possession Hutch game in another loss offer the team as much as a 15 possession game for LEdwards?

I hope the club is seriously looking at the 'who stays/who goes' situation. Do we offer Ah Chee a 29th one year contract? I think he offers more to the total setup than some who will probably stay. He's that 22-30, can play multiple positions and roles ok but not really well type of guy. A filler, a break glass in emergency player. Edit - or do we push him out. If we lose JK, Hurn, Vardy, Hutch, Venables and one or two more then he might survive.

So I'd buy the HEdwards for Gov, West for Kelly and anyone for Cripps argument. Amongst any injury and other form changes.

Firstly, I'm confused that the x means we're retaining the player and the tick means they're getting dropped.

Secondly, JD had 8 pressure acts, the lowest of all forwards. If we're keeping him based on his pressure game, it's leaving a bit to be desired at the moment. JK had 13.

Post-clearance CP makes perfect sense to me. Some players’ CP numbers get inflated by just being present in stoppage situations and so it’s not really a helpful indicator of how good that player is at actually winning contests.

Especially with Naitanui winning HOs to advantage, it’s easy enough to win a pre-clearance CP

What I want

Outs: McGovern, Sheed, Cripps, Nelson, Darling
Ins: HEdwards, LEdwards, West, Foley, Williams

Hurn, Barrass, Sheppard
Cole, H.Edwards, Duggan

Gaff, Kelly, L.Edwards

Ryan, Allen, Petruccelle
Langdon, Kennedy, Ah Chee

Naitanui, Yeo, Shuey

Foley, Williams, Rotham, West

------

What will actually happen

Outs: Nelson, Ah Chee, Langdon
Ins: Foley, Waterman, O'Neill

they need to rotate through half forward. Offer more there than any of our small forwards

I'd go simpler still. Play TK as the striker. Attends CBD then plays off a forward flank. Shuey and Yeo play as inside mids, guys like Redden and Sheed (if not dropped) make up the numbers, or we bring in youth with a defensively minded role.

I'm not as down on TK as others. Pretty much game high pressure acts with Shuey, as well as game high tackles. I just think he's the best of our bunch for scoreboard impact if played in that area, and it might give some balance back having a pinch hitting mid playing forward.

I wouldn't normally advocate for dropping one of our best players of the last decade for a poor month (a little bit longer than that actually), but it's been really poor from him. Admittedly I missed his best game of this period (Swans) so that doesn't help his standing in my eyes.

Nevertheless, that run of form, combined with three absolutely horrendous losses, and we need a shake up, and Darling for mine should be right in the gun. We can easily go with a 2 pronged tall forward line with JK and Allen, and Waterman is tall enough to come in and play a third tall forward role.
