Prediction Changes vs. Brisbane

So if we bring Neade in, are we comfortable that he only brings 1 goal a game. When he doesn't perform, we are a man down.

I can understand the logic in Ken's mind with Young coming in and Dougal needing more time.

Young wasn't dropped for poor form originally, rather Ah Chee knocking down the door with outstanding form and Young being serviceable but not great.

The second time was Wingard coming back from injury and Young being near the bottom performers, serviceable but not great.

A great performance in the SANFL as a response, in a week we get smashed in the AFL, and of course he should be first back in if a player in a similar position is being dropped.

Dougal is a young tall who is building fitness and form after a serious knee operation.

Now I don't have quite the same assessment of Young's AFL form as Ken has stated he does, but what he is saying is logical and truthful.

It's a huge shift in structure but a positive one. Play our talented young tall in his natural position while he's in form and confident, and move a leader and B&F winning CHB back to his natural position to add leadership and help solve our problem with 2m KPFs.

If Howard's form is so fragile that he can't back up his game in the forward line for one week, he's not the answer man.

The change is correct, but why rush it? If it's going to work, it'll work regardless of who the opponent is. Howard doesn't need his hand held - he's already had his debut.

Although I am a Young fan, I am very keen to give Palmer another crack at it - 3rd year on the list, not sure we want to keep developing mids on our list much longer.

Because we only have 11 games left this year to find out if it works or not.
We have Brisbane who we should beat, then a bunch of games where if we are slightly off we will lose.
This is the best chance to bring someone in and give them some gametime and some confidence, not sit them on the bench because the game is tight and Ken only has 19 players he can trust.

I have no doubt that Howard is good enough and will continue to prove that. I want him in because we're going to spank Brisbane and I don't want that to be Hinkley's excuse to keep Neade in the side for 5 weeks. I want Howard to hit the ground running.

Young in is pointless. Same as keeping in Sam Gray. Their level isn't going to go up if they play every game from now until finals. Pump games into replacements who will improve with AFL exposure. Young and Sam Gary will still be there, same level as now, if their replacements aren't better by end of season. The reverse is not the case.

Ken is ruling out Dougal because it’s a bit hard to judge too much on "one sample size".

Yet the large sample size of under-performance by Hartlett and Trengove playing as a forward seems to have escaped the notice of the statistician that is Ken Hinkley.

Young has been a massive disappointment in 2017. If he was performing anywhere near where he did last year, what a luxury to have in our forward line. He is still one of our most proficient footballers on the list, rarely loss his feet, just needs consistency but he is no orphan at the PAFC. Young has a future at our club.

My concern is with the likes of Ah Chee, Palmer, Neade whom have been on the list between 3 and 5 years and struggling to make the grade. I understand depth is important but not if it comes with holding on to untradeable players at the expense of bringing in some fresh talent.

Give Palmer a crack Ken. Clearly he had things to work on, endurance I believe was the main thing, but he has obviously worked hard and has put in a number of weeks of good hard SANFL footy. I thought he showed a bit last year and looked to be the Monfries heir apparent.

It's also a good chance to debut a player!

Young comes in on form. Maybe the issue is letting him stay in the side anymore that a couple of weeks when he loses form. We know his form 1st up when he comes back in has always been great for a couple of weeks then fades. Arch same.

A possible different perspective on the decision to not being in Howard for brisbane:

We lost against Essendon because we did not respect them.

Bringing in Howard when he's not quite ready (coaches stated opinion) because it's 'only brisbane, he may as well get up to speed against them' reinforces the mindset that brisbane are not to be respected as an AFL opponent.

Making sure we respect out opponents and turn up to play accordingly is more important than bringing Howard in one or two games earlier than planned in response to a terrible loss.

I get what you are saying and agree that we need to pick on sustained form, i.e opposite to young decision. Problem has been that we are not dropping players with sustained bad form and from the outside what looks like bad attitudes.
We have an opposition coach say that he exploited our short defence while we keep our best tall defender in the forward line. Then we try and turn one of our next in line tall forwards into a defender to cover this. Then when given the opportunity up forward he dominates and the message is back it up over the next month and you might get in. We can go from possible top 4 to outside the 8 in that time and Howard is being trialled back as a defender because he isn't kicking 8 each week.

Appreciate your attempt at devil's advocate but by playing Jake Neade instead of Dougal Howard this week we disrespect Port Adelaide and reinforces the mindset that Port Adelaide are not to be respected as an AFL opponent.
My perspective might be a little more palatable if the players who didn't turn up to play that night (Hartlett, Pittard, Impey, Hombsch, R Gray) were dropped as a result, and not just the usual suspects.

Lol see my post directly below yours in response to scorch. I think it address your points.

I wonder if this has some thing to do with our inability to kick winning scores against good opposition? Too many forwards who don't have to kick goals to keep their spot. "Ah but they apply lots of pressure" ...... without actually racking up any tackles....
