Mr Magic and tigerninja - Last year, I was the head statistician for the Richmond VFL team so not to be arrogant but my knowledge of many of our players is greater than many on here. I was fortunate enough to be part of the inner sanctum.

In his 1st year, Matt showed so much promise as an 18 year old in the VFL. His clearance work was extraordinary at Coburg.

In 2014, his 2nd year, he continued to develop, learn and become even more dominant in the VFL. He was constantly getting his 20+ touches, 5+ clearances a game and every time he rested forward, he kicked a goal. Plus, his skills and smarts are divine.

This year, he was our best perfomed Tiger in our VFL practise matches and then deservedly got the call up last week to the seniors.

I know he only had 7 possessions, but he also laid 3 tackles and he played only a half of footy.

The reason it is ludicrous as to him being dropped is because he is part of our future. He has never had a fair run at it (more than 1 or 2 successive games). If he does get a fair run at it, it will allow him to get the hang of AFL footy better and grasp the understanding of what is needed to perform at the highest level. He is only 20/21, has all the tools required, now just needs a go. He's earnt it.

If he gets dropped, I will be ropable.
I still dont go much on him but i agree lloyd Morris Gordon and Arnot should be dropped ahead of him they were horrid the other night..

Out: lloyd griff drummond

In: vickery foley (if ready) lennon

McDonough and arnot (defensive forward) to play forward roles. Pinch hit in the middle.
Vickery straight swap for griff due to injury
Foley in to help ease the load on cotchin and co at the coal face.
Lennon to either play the gordon role or sub. Classy half forward in the Knights mould. Good size to mix it up with riewoldt and vickery.

Why anyone knocking Gordon? Been very good every game
Gordon has played one decent game and that was against the witches hats at the Gabba.

FWIW my changes after seeing the VFL game reports:

Out: Griffiths Drummond Morris Gordon Lloyd
In: Vickery Foley C.Ellis Lennon McBean

B: Hunt Astbury Batchelor
HB: Houli Rance Vlastuin
C: B.Ellis Grigg McIntosh
HF: Martin Riewoldt Miles
F: McDonough Vickery McBean
R: Maric Cotchin Edwards
INT: Lennon Foley Arnot
SUB: C.Ellis

Reasons for Changes:
Griffiths & Drummond both injured so forced changes. Outside that I'd make 3 other changes and IMO the 3 I've omitted are the 3 players who had the least amount of impact on Friday night and for that fact have struggled all season. So Lloyd Gordon & Morris can go back to the VFL.

I'd put Hunt into the back pocket, as a former tagger he has the concentration to stick to a task as well as the ability when we have the ball to link up and provide drive from the back line. Vickery comes back in as replacement for Griffiths and to give support to Maric in the ruck. Lennon Foley & Corey have been dominant the first couple of VFL games and their inclusion should help us with extra run and carry. Foley and Ellis have also shown that they know how to win clearances racking up 28 combined last week in the wet against Frankston. Granted Geelong are a big step up from Frankston but hey if you know how to win the ball you know how to win the ball. Finally I'd bring the Bean in for his debut. We've been getting the ball into the F50 with ease all season but we struggle to score. McBean has shown over his 2 seasons at VFL level that he can kick goals either from marking or from crumbing the ball. The Cats defence wouldn't be used to defending a 200cm tall who moves around like McBean and given the Cats key defenders are all big slowish types McBean could be that point of difference that gets the side excited and rejuvenated.

Ellis better come in this week, Vickery and Riewoldt will be drooling over the laser kicks.
Agree want Ellis Foley Vickery Grimes in this week and conca and Deledio if fit...for Griffiths Drummond lloyd Morris Gordon and mcdonut

surely it's too early for Ellis (a kid with no preseason) no matter how much we want him to come in. Mind you, not like the selection panel have done the most sensible things over the journey - so perhaps he will. Grimes and Deledio are unlikely to be fit given previous injury reports from the club.

Nup, we're just going to have to go with what we got, those that are ready physically, and hope for effort.

Vlastuin got his chance in his first year by about round 5 and even without an awesome tank he was fantastic for us.
Time to give Ellis a crack.
How far can Lloyd, Morris, Gordon, Arnot and co. really take us? We know Ellis has talent, probably can't offer much less than those guys (maybe the running power of Gordon...but **** he is dumb), but geez he could offer HEAPS more if he even gets 15 touches.

Disagree as if he is fit and 100% ready then he should play
Now he's killed it in the vfl and has shown a lot more than Madonna and Arnot who both to my surprise got gigs.then add Drummond sadly shouldn't have played also before him
It appears we made the wrong selections based on the experienced kids rather than talent and form kids
We were playing in Brisbane the day the vfl team played in Coburg so there may have been a transmission difficulty as Lennon and CEllis were standouts
Ps Take it from me DH took the safe option

I agree he is at least a better part of our future than a heap of guys older on our list who clearly simply can't be part of our future due to the age, reality and simple maths in terms of being a part of our next premiership team.

It is good to hear someone who seems to be at least once near the inner sanctum.

Tell me. Did you watch the coach tonight? Dunstall and I think Jonathan Brown was talking about our list. I think they hit the nail on the head but I must say Dunstall has been caught out playing the spin game. I know on the couch in the last 2 years he said words to the effort Richmond has enough talent trying to ward off suggestions we might be targeting others. Now last night he said what I agree with and usually he speaks more common sense than banter on that program. We are 2-3 FA agents away from where we need to be roundabout he said. Then they talked about us going early with FA getting Chaplin while other clubs where concentrated on building the base or J Brown might have mentioned that. I understand the logic of dabbling with a few recycled players due to the compromised drafts but I think it was overdone particularly towards the end. I categorically agree with what they were suggesting on the coach and it is something I have been arguing for a while in the sense we did not go strong enough towards youth in our list strategy and are paying for it. We are not Carlton but we are still paying for it now in moderation as the likes of Bulldogs rise on the back of extremely well picked high end draft talent in recent years.

What do you think about was was said on the coach last night about Richmond footy club list?

I was also interested on their comments about Gold Coast and GWS. Basically said GWS had a better strategy because their mature types(e.g.. Ward, Scully, Davis etc..) they got were younger and closer to their perceived premiership window than Gold Coast and they invested smarter in the draft as well.

It gets back to recruitment. If you put time on the draft eventually you will be rewarded if you do things right and it is something we ignored a little too much over the years and we are starting to pay the consequences of it know because the benefits of our recycled additions could only last so long. If it fits our window of a premiership fine. But if it is only a short term cascade of where we are at in terms of building a premiership that approach helps no one IMO including the club and supporters long term as well as the majority of players trying to win the premiership as well!
