I'm not convinced we are at the stage where we should be shuffling the deck chairs and bringing in speculative young players, but rewarding consistently strong SANFL form is a must. On that note, Eddy and particularly Monfries (who is a proven performer at AFL level) should have made the team by now.

Ken is very slow to react. We're now midway through the season and our fortune could go either way. It's not the time to cross fingers and hope for the best.

What does Brett Eddy have to do?

Would have thought that was obvious after Round 1. How about this: "run out at least 80% TOG of an AFL game and cover nearly as much ground as Westhoff or Trengove or the justly-maligned Young for that matter".

Young IMO was lucky that Wingard was out last week as well as Gus underdone so let's park the Eddy-for-Young idea, he's at least third cab off that rank.

I'm not a selector's backside as I've admitted many times but I suspect for a key position player it doesn't matter if it's Eddy or frigging Lobbe in, you need to suggest who he's going to replace, and make a case for the role, not just the SANFL form. SANFL form ought to be table stakes and Eddy has that in spades. Good on him. But alone it's not enough IMO unless you're talking about a flanker or midfielder coming in with a lot of support around them.

Theory: goals at SANFL level for his type of forward don't predict goals at AFL level in recent years. Someone go dig into the stats.

Melt day!
As Ken has a habit of releasing selection news early, 'melt day' is actually 'melt days'. Actually, considering the content of this thread, we may as well call it 'melt week'.

Everyone is prone to **** ups. The issue with him is that he's just this little guy who doesn't do anything particularly well but doesn't do anything particularly terribly either, running around all over the place, but mainly up forward, and not really providing anything we need. It's obvious he's been pushed out of the midfield, so why play him forward when there's better available options? Either pick Monfries, or play Howard as a tall foil for Dixon. Even Marshall.

90% of his possessions are gifted by the opposition not giving AF about him

You know it will be AJ.

What's this Amon under a cloud business?

Trouble is, Ken has been rewarding the team, once Monfries is in (if and when) and plays well, it means he will leave him in to someone elses expense and I doubt that will be Amon. It might be a good move for him to come in and put pressure on young to keep his spot.

If Young was dropped, surely we'd bring in one of the kids before Monfries? Time for the next generation. Gus has had his time.
Are we about developing a list to compete for a flag or are we trying to win one? Surely it's the later. That said you pick the best bloke to win, right now that's Gus.

I get absolutely livid with losing but i don't really understand the melts people experience over selection, it's really weird. Some of the chopping and changing of 21st and 22nd rank players makes bugger all difference in my opinion. Monfries is probably best 22 but he isn't a superstar role the red carpet out for either that some on here are making him out to be, in fact my recent memories of Monfries playing was a guy struggling to hold his spot 2 seasons ago.

And if we were really about rewarding SANFL form, then Jimmy Toumpas would probably be the first cab off the rank and that wouldn't please many.

people are mad because it's come to literally not being able to afford to drop guys like Hartlett and Westhoff. we built them up and for whatever reasons they're ours to keep so we have to prove they're good by playing them. if we drop them the club knows they'll never bounce back and then some, if we don't drop them at least the country doesn't 'know' they're cooked because they've been dropped and it's the beginning of the end. but these players can't compliment an already solid structure if there isn't one to compliment, that's why things don't look good, and people are sick of the cycle repeating where they look good because the team is solid!

Mods, Portology needs to be carded for being too sensible and not irrationally melting on a changes thread.

Honestly, what the hell is this world coming to?

Westhoff is quite amazeballs defensively, and taking 9 marks around the ground is nothing to sneeze at, whether it made up for the way he took shots at goal, and passed off responsibility to Polec is definitely questionable though.

In the end he adds a lot of things to the side, but as happened in Money ball his performance under pressure really hurts us sometimes, then again he did snap an amazing goal on the weekend and who could forget that god-tier checkside in the 2013 semi final?

He's such a confusing proposition it's maddening!!

We are trying to make finals to save the coach's job.

I might be wrong, but hasn't Toumpas been playing off half back in the SNAFL?
All the more reason why he'd be next in line for a call up lol

I'd have Gus or Eddy in based off their current form but it's likely it'll be at Young/sGray's expense & they're undroppable atm no matter how little impact they have each week.

We lost by 2 points last week due to players not pulling their weight. Rewarding form and dropping underachievers absolutely can make all the difference.

"There were a couple players who were a little bit down, but you're always going to get that," Hinkley said

"Over the course of the team, I thought we were reasonably consistent albeit that we perhaps we didn't have a couple of players who stood out as easily as Dangerfield, Selwood and Duncan."

So Hinkley acknowledges that certain players weren't playing up to standard, but because the team plays well as a unit, he's not willing to make the team better by dropping those players?

Gotta be consistent, right? Consistently mediocre. Let's not push for elite standards. Let's not strive to get better.

Get it through your head, Ken - your old bum chums at Geelong are ****ing RAT SHIT. I can't believe we lost to those clowns, and the fact that we did shows that that consistent performance was ****ing consistently terrible.

Every time we lose it's the same ****ing thing - teams push their defence back, waiting for us to bomb it long like we inevitably do because you continually pick dumb players like Sam Gray and Aaron Young as your high forwards who are either too stupid, too lazy or too small to lead up to the ball and take a contested mark.

But nah, let's give the same idiots another opportunity to **** us over by being a 'little down', instead of playing guys who would have been excited to be back part of the team. Because 'you're always going to get that.'
