Can anyone tell me the story behind these cringe-worthy dressups? Why? Slater seems to think we tune in to watch him, with the cricket the side-show. In fact I honestly think he gets worse each summer. Needs to get over himself - or is it a direct instruction coming from someone higher up at Channel 9? He certainly wasn't this annoying when he started out and the fact these "dressups" were given the green light suggests the idiotic behaviour is being encouraged.

the 222 benaud references by some of the team are flat out embarrasing. grieg, benaud and lawry became well liked for being themselves commentating on the cricket rather than trying too hard to foster up some cult of personality. you get the impression they think people are watching on in some kind of adoration simply because they're in the 9 commentary box. has anyone told them what ****wits they are? they need to get knocked down a peg or two.

Cricket was Kerry Packer's flagship, the jewel in his crown. It was what he went to war over. The decline in nine's coverage correlates nicely with his death. Can anyone imagine the crap they put out now being allowed if KFBP were still around?

Mark Taylor is great in isolation. Ian Healy and Michael Slater are fun for the cricket show, but they're too biased and excitable to call the game properly. Mark Nicholas is horrible, from his put on posh voice to the ridiculous "hair" that sits atop his head. David "Bumble" Lloyd was great, he and Taylor commentating together was really nice, quite a bit of banter without being tools. Shane Warne was good, but as someone above mentioned he needs to be guided by a more subdued commentary partner.
Going to every day of the Boxing Day test meant I missed out on Bill Lawry, but Slater needs to take his cues from Lawry. You can be excitable and a little biased and still call the game properly.
Tony Greig seemed to be a prick, but I loved him calling games, no one will ever replace him and Richie Benaud.
I don't really understand what Nine is trying to do though; is the excessiveness an attempt to draw in viewers, or do the commentators know that no one has a genuine alternative and that they can do whatever they like?
The BBL commentary team has been great, and Nine needs to make Gilchrist, Ponting and Waugh offers soon. It wouldn't hurt if they brough Sir Viv across for next summer too. Andy Maher and Howie (dont' know his real name) should never be allowed to commentate any sport ever again.

They try and appeal to the lowest common denominator which is pretty easy to tell by the advertising that is played during games.

I don't actually mind him. I find that at least he is professional and does a reasonable job at being a "host" holding things together.

I get that he's the host, but there's something smug about him I think. He professional but not especially likeable. I don't think anyone on the commentary team at the moment could do a better job, but I'm sure someone out there could.

have to agree that current crop of commentators are not up to it. To much of a boys club.

Got a idea for nine to run next yr. Instead of running polls on how many runs they will make or crap like that get the commentators hooked up to device that gives a little zap then put up a link where you can click on the most annoying and that commentator gets a zap voltage would increase in length the more crap you talk

I reckon Brendon Julian does a pretty good job with the cricket on Fox Sports and have always wondered why Nine haven't offered him the big bucks (or maybe they have?) to make the switch?

Having said that, I don't really mind Mark Nicholas, but maybe it's just that the others around him are so bad.

Nicholas ruins good moments with his tendency to moan when something exciting happens, not to mention that he ruined the commentary of Siddle's hat trick a few years ago.

Brendon Julian can barely put a sentence together and should be nowhere near a cricket commentating microphone....they pull the p*ss out of him regularly on IC. Mark Nicholas is a knob. Apart from that I agree with the rest of your post wholeheartedly.
