Toast Chris Scott

I think with any other coach we could be 5-2 or 6-1 due to us having a very healthy list, but no matter who coaches Port they would still be roughly where they are. A better coach might have gotten them over the line against the Gold Coast but thats about it. Primus is a poor coach, Scott looks to be an excellent one. But Port lack depth and talent and will struggle this year and probably next year barring some sort of miracle.

I disagree purely on the basis that Primus was an inside voice; he brings no perspective to a myopic club, is probably using the bones of Choco's gameplan and most likely retained the same preseason training outline. I'm not saying Scott would have made them an instant top-4, but he'd definitely have done his best to revive the old guys on their list, and given them maybe 2-3 wins more than what they have now.

So far so good for me. Really happy with the way the team looks and he is giving our young guys a go. Hope it can contiue, but I am going to save my judgment until the end of the year.

The Coaching caper will generate many hurdles and challenges and it won't always be smooth sailing.
It's early days but so far he gets a massive tick - Media presence A , Player buy-in A+ , Walking the talk A, Game Plan A , Results A+ , Image A .
Cook said his appointment was also about 2015 so I assume he is also good at formulating and communicating a vision and plan.
Great stuff Cats !!

Some things i've noticed:
- Lost Selwood early but we still managed to run over the top of the saints with late goals. Good bench management and midfield rotating I thought.

- Pulled a swifty against Freo submitting a tall side but with late withdrawals we ended up being undersized. Cheeky but I thought it had an influence and Freo complained about it.

- Against Sydney moved Wojak across the half forwardline with devastating consequences.

- Buddy kicked 3 goals in 3 minutes against us, Scott managed to put the breaks on that and shut him out of the game with Lonergan. Shut down Hodge brilliantly with Ling also and then called on the youngsters to step up. They did.

- Managed to get Bartel's matchup on Leon Davis in the last quarter against Collingwood crucial matchup, match winning maybe even.

Only little things but tactically he's looks a genious after bomber. Just seems to always make the right move at the right time. With a lesser coach we would be 4-3 at the minute I reckon.

So far, so good for sure. I'll save my assessment until the end of the year though. But a bit silly to compare Scott to Primus at this stage. Scott himself has attributed in large part this seasons success to the players themselves. He has some champion players at his disposal who have played together for 7-8 years. Port's list isnt even comparable.

Lets not get carried away. Scott looks the goods, though and a good replacement for a good coach.

Thompson was a fine coach and this is no personal criticism but without the change of coach, I reckon we might have been down propping up the ladder with our old foes St Kilda.

No doubt the change of message has helped freshen up the old boys and fasttracked the new players.

Also a coach who is a very good game day strategist.

In wrapping him up I'm mindful that Ayres had some success in his first year too. However Scott, unlike Ayres, is an extremely good communicator, a keen student of the game and much more grounded and intelligent. I see him as an innovator not a follower.

He also comes with a pedigree having been very influential during the emergence of Freo as a force.

As one or two have suggested the test will come when we hit some low spots as we inevitably will. I'm extremely confident he'll handle them consummately and that we have a beauty in him.

No fence sitting for me. ;)

Ayres had also spent a year or two as Blight's assistant prior to getting the top job, and (correct me if I'm wrong) Geelong was his first gig. He hadn't seen how anyone else did things. Scott also had the advantage of sitting in with Mark Harvey, one of Thompson's direct peers - no doubt there would have been some particular interest to Thompson's methods when Freo played Geelong. Judging by the number of times they nearly knocked us off, I'd say they got a lot of it right, too. Notwithstanding the 2010 semi-final.

While i see where you are coming from, i doubt there is much any coach could do at the moment to fix the mess that is Port. Their list is really very poor, and while they have a good kid or 2 coming through thats about the only positive there is.
But i still believe that any other coach would maybe have gotten them the GC win and maybe one other. But 2 or 3 wins at this stage of the season still is a fail mark.

What I like most about Scotty is that he empowers his personnel, playing and coaching, to use their vision and initiative within the context of the overall game plan. And that when credit is ascribed to him, he readily diverts the praise towards those who have actually achieved.

The classic example is the Taylor - Lonergan switch on to Buddy Franklin, a move which he quickly pointed out that he had nothing to do with. What he's done with our backline (as an example) is allow them to sort out their own match ups, and he allows them the flexibility to to call their own shots as a unit. The players have responded to this empowerment with absolute zeal as it means that Scarlo's wisdom & Harry's passion for analysis (to cite two examples) are both encouraged and utilised.

He looks very much like being very much a players' coach, and also like being an incredibly astute piece of recruitment (as he was contacted by Cookie and actually asked to apply for the job in the first place).

Our avoiding the apparent fate of the Saints is a massive relief, but all previous posters here have hit the nail on the head by saying that only time will truly tell.

What a great effort by CS first year as coach and has guided his team into the GF through great man management and a subtly thinkering of the game plan.

Well done Chris one more to go buddy

Amazing debut year. Now to cap it off...

His calmness and professionalism have clearly rubbed off on the playing group

You always got the sense that Bomber rode the emotional roller coaster a little bit... Whereas while Chris Scott seems to be a sensitive soul, at the end of the day he is a ruthless competitor and is leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of the 'perfect game'

well done Chris - even at the lions as a player I knew he would make the coaching grade...he must think this coaching caper is a walk in the park :p

no he has earnt it...brilliant Job!

has been a refrshing cog in the cats machine this year.. best choice last year. wouldn't have been here otherwise.

Best 2 moments of Chris so far (besides all turn around he has done for us)

1. When Chappy was Angry against Dees?? And he went down and had a 1 on 1 with him personally...Calmed him down and Chappy played out the game without an issue

2. Today when the 50 was given to Nick and he kicked a goal and qtr time he went down to the umpire and asked what the 50 was for.. So he could possibly learn from it (and the players)

That is the hallmark of a great leader. Hope he wins us one more game in 2011:thumbsu::thumbsu::D:D

Not in any way underestimating Chris's impact or how he's handled so brilliantly the transition from Bomber to him. However, Pods comments on Before the Game tonight were interesting. He said he'd never been associated with a club where the team was as player driven as the one at Geelong.

What a fantastic job to get to a GF in his first year. If you were playing anyone else but us I would be hoping for a cats win. Everyone wrote you off at the beginning of the year and he was one of the reasons why.

Good Luck on Saturday.

That just highlights how good a communicator and man manager he is though, he's had a vision from day 1 re gameplan etc and been able to get everyone to buy into it, and he's had enough trust in them to let them lead the change without much of a leash. Sounds like a pretty good relationship between players and coaches at the Cattery right now, and Chris deserves a lot of credit for that.

Pretty much what I was saying PO. As I said, I was by no means underestimating Chris's impact. In fact in an earlier post in this thread I was pumping him up further. Just emphasising how crucial the culture is at our club.

Just by-the-bye. While having a couple of frothies at the Hilton post game we came across a couple of people from Canberra who had been let off the leash for the weekend. One was at a GWS hosted function attended by Stephen Silvagni and Gubby Allen. Silvagni went to great lengths to explain how crucial it was to establish a solid culture. Saying it was the foundation on which successfull clubs are built. And mentioned the Cats to illustrate his point. Apparently spoke really well which surprised me.

I just wanted to pop in and say that your coach is an absolute legend. It would've been very easy to say to inadvertently bag Port Adelaide last night after not getting the job with us and now he's in a Grand Final, but to have the respect to talk us up and say that he was actually disappointed he didn't get the job showed the character of the man.

Get up tomorrow lads, I want the fairytale first year coach story to be complete!

I love the man! What a man! Lets hope this isn't his first and last GF appearance....i have no doubt than anything less he will be dissappointed in! :thumbsu:
