Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

So with the news of Brock McLean being traded to Carlton for Pick 11, I'll quickly update my draft. And the only thing that has changed is that Koby Stevens is now going to Melbourne instead of Carlton.

Melbourne
Scully
Trengove
Stevens
Panos
Gawn
Gordon

Carlton
Crichton
Houghton
Hill

And that is an amazing draft for Melbourne.

Definately an amazing draft for the Dees but not likely. Would the Dees pass up on a tall at pick 10 considering Panos' availability at pick 18 is not guarenteed? I doubt it. However I would prefer it panning out this way, unfortunately I just can't see it happening..

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

Yeah, I edited the opening post of this thread to include the Melbourne pick and my thoughts on it.

Obviously there isn't a guarantee of Melbourne getting a quality tall at their second round pick in the real thing. So chances are Melbourne will take a tall in the first round instead. But I'm not going to make wholesale changes to my draft until after trade week, so for now I'm happy to stick with the Dees taking Stevens.

If I was to change the draft, without having put a lot of thought into it, Panos would probably move up to #11, Adelaide would take Stevens at #13 and Gysberts could slide to Melbourne at #18. I wouldn't discount Butcher being taken at #2 now, and Stevens being drafted at #11.

Chris, two things. Firstly and understandably you haven't included any older players from the VFL but this is one year where there will definitely be at least one and probably more picked up in the first four rounds. I think Mark Dwyer from Port Melbourne for example will be drafted.
Secondly the Saints as the slowest team in the comp will be concentrating on speed. I'd be staggered if we gambled on a big guy in the first two rounds.

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

Yeah, I'll admit to not knowing a lot about mature aged players. I am expecting a fair few from the VFL, WAFL and SANFL to be picked up after the fourth round though.

As for the Saints/Black pick, it was mainly due to the retirement of Allen and the Saints not having great depth in tall forwards in my opinion (Cahill is pretty much it, as Lynch is more a third tall). I did strongly consider them taking a fast midfielder, but I wanted Black to go first round and thought if any team would take the punt it would be the Saints. Winmar with their second rounder adds speed, but I'm actually expecting them to trade for some speed....

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

Chris i actually think there is more chance that Butcher slips to Melbournes pick 11 than them passing on Trengove and taking him at 2.

Im not certain Panos is worth pick 11 but if Talia or Butcher was around they would take them I think, and hope that Panos or Carlise were also around with pick 18.

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

Great work Chris

Very happy with Essendon's selections...drafting some top mids after bolstering our KPP over the last few years.

Are there many small defenders going around in the draft? Or even a mature age small defender? I feel essendon are lacking in this area.

Also, Brendon Fewsters chances...rookie draft?

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

I said I wouldn't do it until after trade week...but I've updated my draft. Initially the plan was to just update a few picks, but in the end 17 selections were changed.

I'll update the opening post with my explanations for the changes, but for now here are the updates;

#3 (Richmond) Morabito - Butcher
#4 (Fremantle) Butcher - Morabito
#6 (Sydney) Rohan - Martin
#10 (Essendon) Martin - Stevens
#11 (Melbourne) Stevens - Carlisle
#16 (St Kilda) Black - Rohan

#18 (Richmond) Carlisle - Melksham
#19 (Fremantle) Jetta - Black
#25 (Essendon) Melksham - Jetta
#32 (St Kilda) Winmar - Fyfe

#38 (Sydney) McNeil - Reid
#39 (West Coast) Fyfe - Winmar
#42 (Essendon) Taylor - Kennedy
#44 (Brisbane) Kennedy - Taylor
#46 (Collingwood) Reid - Hutchings
#48 (St Kilda) Hutchings - McNeil

#60 (Brisbane) Hicks - Dylan Jones

I'll update the opening post when I get the chance, but rest assured there was reasoning behind my changes.

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

Chris I rate your thoughts very highly but why do you like Rohan will slip to StKilda's pick, just seems a steal for the Saints.

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

It's really based on his ability to win the ball and what he does with it when he does get it. He is only averaging 14 disposals a game, and it's not going to get any easier at AFL level. X-factor can only get a player so far, and at the moment that is Rohan's greatest attribute. While I would also question whether he will be anything more than a half forward.

There is no doubting he has potential, that along with his speed and defensive pressure will make him appealing to a lot of clubs. But all the players I have being taken ahead of him are either midfielders who have shown more promise or quality key position players. In the end, the draft is perceived to be relatively weak and as such it wouldn't surprise me to see clubs going for 'safer' options in the first round.

Although his draft camp results could very well see him go earlier, and I for one will be interested in how his kicking goes...

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

I'm half afraid to post my phantom draft now. After your changes it's quite similar to mine ><

Fair enough, what are you thoughts on another X-factor type player Fyfe I would love to see him paying at Richmond next year, I've only seem him play one though.

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

i think quite a few VFL players will get drafted this year... especially Myles Sewell and Sam Dwyer.

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

Love the new updates! I think Melbourne would love to get a tall at pick 11 and Carlisle would suit us perfectly.
Besides who could complain with getting Scully, Trengrove, Carlisle, Panos and Gawn with our first 5 picks!

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

Why does this have me worried then. I would rather a guy who can definately play inside and does it regularly. But I would actually say we'd go hard after a small defender in the 2nd round though, this along with inside gut running mids is our biggest concern. We have KPP forwards and backs with Hurley,Gumbleton, Pears, Neagle, Hooker and Michael Still.

It has you worried becasue you know squat. I can not belive you are still running aorund this board like some sort of expert given you where expossed as a fraud last year. I guess the up side to that is you no longer hang around the Essendon board as much.....

Watch the first ten minutes of the TAC Cup final and tell me who had 4 clearances in that time and then ran forward to provide the outside role as well.

Fact. Some blokes can play both roles just fine!

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

I noticed there has been a bit of talk about Josh Thomas in some of the other phantom draft threads. I currently do not have him in my draft, and that is simply an oversight on my behalf.

To be honest, I know little about the players from Queensland. For some reason they didn't feature heavily in my research. I've been surprisingly busy lately (it's amazing how one 12 hour ambulance placement can screw up an entire week), but I have begun to look into them.

I will be doing another update to my draft after trade week, and when I do expect to see Thomas in the first two rounds....

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

Why would the lions choose allen christensen in the draft when they get gary rohan or brad sheppard who are far better players and have far greater upside and growth still left in them. Yeah they reckon Josh Thomas is a absolute gun player, the first in a very long time to come out of queensland except for maybe dayne beams.

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

Dustin Martin has emerged to knock Butcher off his perch and make it a midfielders' top 4. Expect Butcher to slide but only to about 8 or 9

Re: 2009 Phantom Draft - Version 2

Wait, I just noticed. Why do you have Melbourne selecting both Carlisle and Panos? They only need 1 forward to boost their tall stocks with Watts and Jurrah, having both of them would clog the list. I can see Melbourne taking someone like Talia or Sheppard beforehand... or maybe even Vardy.

I don't care what people say, as far as I'm concerned there is a top four in this draft. There has been for months, and nothing has really changed. I prefer Cunnington to Martin anyway...

Wait, I just noticed. Why do you have Melbourne selecting both Carlisle and Panos?

I considered them drafting Talia at #11, but I still think he'll slip a bit. In the end Melbourne drafted the best talls available in my opinion, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them develop Carlisle into a defender/mobile ruck.
