Clinton Young or Andrew Walker?

You know who i'm picking (bias), but I'd be interested in everybody else's thoughts. Both players can be good, but also fall under some heavy criticism at times, whether warranted or unwarranted.

I voted for Walker.

Yes, Young is the superior player, but I think if a Carlton player finally wins a poll, you'll stop creating threads comparing Hawthorn players to Carlton players who are useless.

Walker has more talent than Young.

Walker has played down back more than the midfield and forward of centre like Young up until this year.

Walker has played on Croad, Robertson, Burgoyne, Aker, Mcleod and done his job on most of them.

I've never seen Young rag doll a player like Walker has done.

Walker's an extremely poor Jarred Brennan. Top athlete, got nothing much else going for him ATM, poor skills, average footy smarts.

Young's proven himself on the biggest stage, and continues to develop into a hard running, long kicking winger. Having said that, Walker's got more potential, and if he could actually learn how to kick he could become just as an effective player as Young.

lol at people who think walker isn't tough. probably the toughest player we've got down at carlton. he has the extremely rare mix of being one of the best athletes in the game while also being extremely courageous and tough.

walker has huge potential. he's obviously got an enormous leap, speed, strength, size. he also is one of the best oplayers in the comp at picking the ball off the floor while running at full speed.

however, my biggest knock on him is he still sruggles to read and understand the game. i feel footy doesn't come natural to him. he constantly makes poor decisions and this in turn makes his kicking look bad. fwiw, i think his kicking is actually pretty good but most of the time he is in two minds about where to kick and often rushes. he hasn't got great anticipation or positioning. apart from that, i'd like to see him take more contested marks given his size and hold on to some of the screamers he goes up for.

i also read hodgepodge write he is a downhill skier once and if it wasn't that tool writing it, i would have been very very shocked. walker works too hard defensively. his natural game is to run and attack however (and pagan has a bit to do with this) the flair in his game has been choked out and he is now way too concious of playing defensively. he almost always keeps his man quiet.

i'm just hoping he has an injury free year this year and maybe with a few more seasons under his belt he will begin to read the play a lot better and develop a better footy brain.


young on the other hand, i see him as one of those players who benefits enormously from playing in a great team. there's no hiding he is an outside player but imo you need a few of them in today's game as well. he has a lovely left foot (like most left-footers) and unlike walker, knows where to position himself in order to get the ball. and again unlike walker, he isn't afraid to back himself and take on the opposition with his run and carry.


if i had to decide which player i'd rather from the two, i would go walker pretty easily and i think hodgepodge would too but he feels insecure and needs to bump up young. i don't think young would be as good playing for carlton and with our team improving i hold high hopes that walker will come into his own and make his mark as one of the better mids of the comp.

Clinton Young was well on track to win the Norm Smith Medal in the GF.

I have yet to see Walker even be on track for a servicable game for Carlton.

wlaker has been in the afl system since 2003 draft. thats a full 5 years
and only played handfull of good games out of 80 odd games.

carlton apear to have a lot of these type of players who are athletes that cant play football.

the amount of hype that walker gets from carlton supporters is mindboggling i even remember that parrot saying that walker was undoubtly the best player from his draft ( this was about 6 months ago)

carlton should of traded this dud when they had the chance & kept kennedy.

Not sure actually. Walker is a better actual defender and has better athletic qualities, but Young craps on him when it comes to actually kicking the ball.

Walker has been frustrating. Injury has prevented him from doing what everyone knows he can do. He's had brilliant dominating games, then goes down with a shoulder injury in the next game and is out for 6 months.

If he can string 20 games together next season, he'll be able to deliver consistently. He can be anything. His disposal is better than most people think, and has gotten a lot better.

Definitely a smokey for our B and F in 2009, and would be worth a punt in DT or SC. That's if he gets a full pre-season and NAB cup in.

Walker has far much more potential than Young. In terms of output they are the same - if you think Walker isn't capable of dominating games, then you haven't watched him at his best.

Almost anyone can play a defensive stopping role. It is nothing to brag about.

how many years will it take? Carlton made a huge mistake taking Walker ahead of McLean. Having a McLean/Judd combo would have got you guys into the finals last year (or at least the top 10).

Why would anyone go Walker? You've just admitted yourself that Young knows how to play football better than Walker. Does potential really count for that much (even when it doesn't actually exist)?
