I don't care what he says, I wouldn't care if he said "we're looking like a massive pile of dog **** at the current time."

I hope he gets fired soon, or we win the flag.

That's pretty much the only two outcomes possible at the end of this year (maybe runner up the only exception).
Anything less and we'll be seeing Bomber go I think.
A new coach with some of these youngsters coming through will be an exciting period of time I think.:thumbsu:

I really find it fascinating how some guys just jump to extreme position and despite comments on the thread just keep repeating it. No one is suggesting Bomber should have gone to extremes in his comments about our 2007 chances, just give us some reason for optimism. Repeat, no one is saying he should be canvassing a premiership or a top 4 just give us something positive. It's not rocket science.

Like it or not, its through the media we get the latest info. And Balmy's been very good at it, but there are some areas only the coach is best qualified to comment on. If you guys are prepared to write-off "We're not expecting too much" as not significant, then I'm not. It smacks of a negative mindset. Don't set aspirational targets and no one will be disappointed.

Too many of us have accepted mediocrity for too long.
Cheers

Do you expect him to jump up and down and sing a song about how we will win the flag this year? As for those talking up the media skills of such awesome coaches as Malthouse and Laidley... I would rather have Thompson than either of these hacks.

Even if you would rather have him over those two, he is still an average media performer.

From a pure 'talking at functions' point of view, he is very good. At press conferences, he is average.

Malthouse has coached teams to premierships and countless finals appearances. Only recently he got average Collingwood sides into G.Fs and was stiff not to have pinched one of em. He can be a bit of a d i c k at times, but his record shows he can coach. Methinks we would have done much better under him in the last seven years than our present coach.

I think that it is better to underestimate and be quiety confident than have a repeat of the fiasco last year where we grossly underperformed after the early hype. I think he has learnt that lesson. If he said "Yep top 3 bank on it" and then we lost the first four games, we would all be calling for his head - wouldnt we?

less expectation - less pressure

There'll be more pressure on us this year than last year as a result of our dismal 2006 and the changes made after the review etc. We'll be one of the most closely watched clubs this year.

If he won us a couple of flags during the blood letting, I'd be happy to have the list bled dry in the process;) Like him or loath him he's got a very good coaching record, that's indisputable.

What an insightful and intelligent person you are 'chappy':thumbsu:

Of course I say that about everyone who agrees with me.:)

Frankly I'm not real fussed what he has to say - media soundbytes don't do anything for me. So long as we perform on the field then I'll be happy. That's what Bomber is paid to do, mouthing tired cliches to the media isn't something I tend to pay any attention.

I am sure the club has much higher expectations among themselves. Of course, they'd bloody well better!

Its time for the GFC to win 4 points when it matters. It's been a long long time since we have.
I'll be looking forward to what Bomber has to say...when there is something worth talking about...hopefully this Sunday arvo.

I don't care what Mark has to say proof will be in the performance of the team.
Just hope they don't play like last year.

There is an article about the Bulldogs in the Herald Sun today. They seem pretty sure of themselves. Claim to have the deepest list in the AFL etc, and imply that they will win easily this weekend.

Taken from the Mercury, 2007 AFL guide.

WHAT DOES BOMBER THOMPSON HAVE TO DO TO SURVIVE.
At least sanity prevailed and Mark Thompson kept his job after a farcical review in which everyone from the milk bar owner in Pakington St to the mayor was asked for their opinion. Thompson has admitted it wasn't his best year and is relieve that a structure has been put in place under which he can get back to simply coaching and not worrying about the workings of the football department. Getting everyone pulling inthe same direction will be his biggest challenge. Anythign but a return to finals - probably even a top four spot given there were premiership expectations last year - will be required for Bomber to go around again. That's if he doesn't jump ship beforehand, particularrly given the anticipated goings - on at Windy Hill.

Thompson is on a hiding to nothing - he either has to make the top four or his job could be gone.

This is the problem with having a massive public review - the pressure is going to be even more immense.

If we are 1-3, 2-4, 3-6 etc etc, he is a sitting duck.

There's nothing wrong with accountabilty. He expects it from the players, we should expect it from him. His record to date hasn't been that good and whilst he's admitted last year wasn't his best coaching performance he's also sought to blame everything from injury to having too much to do for it. No more excuses.

Agreed - there are no excuses this year.

There weren't very many last year, in reality.

The more pressure, the better in my book. Gotta cope with it to go the whole way anyway, might as well get used to facing it.

Not against you CM, but oh dear, the poor baby. You'd almost think he was a sweet little innocent - until you point out salient facts like being paid 500K a year, having 7 years before this one to hone his skills, and be thankful he's in a job at all.

The pressure is immense? Well it's called accountability. He's had 7 years to get used to it. He's been able to recruit virtually the entire playing group, and have them playing to his alleged gameplan. If the side isn't up to it he must share some of the blame.

He could well be in trouble by round 10, especially with the following draw:

Round 7: Cats v. Eagles @ Skilled
Round 8: Cats v. Dockers @ Skilled
Round 9: Port v. Cats @ AAMI
Round 10: Saints v. Cats @ TD
Round 11: Crows v. Cats @ AAMI

None of the above games are givens, and depending on where we are at we could potentially lose close to all these games. Especially since we have lost that killer instinct at Skilled.
