Good pick, and yup, thats who I was referring to in my previous post! Of course I fully understand why he wasn't picked earlier cause he isnt really one of us (though I agree his season for us was pretty good and instrumental in big Sav kicking 90. But he was an absolute champion. FWIW, Id choose him as my best CHF of players Ive seen. Yes, many could argue that Carey or Hart were better, but if its a Grand Final Id go with Dermie every time (I didn't think Careys games in PdFs and GFs were all that great)

I will throw into the discussion that Frank Murphy should be in the conversation with that group. CHF in 6 Grand Finals in a row and Premiership CHF in 4 Grand Finals in a row.

Possibly, although you are using team metrics to rate an individual player. A little like saying Bucks wasn't as good as Voss because Voss got three flags.

Can see your point but probably more taking Nuts opinion on the matter than Team success.

When talk turns to the game’s great centre half-forwards, Frank Murphy’s name is rarely mentioned. But those who saw him in action, or played alongside him, rated him in the top ranks, and talked glowingly of the role he played in Collingwood’s Machine-era successes.

Gordon Coventry, who played at full-forward throughout Murphy’s career, is unequivocal: “In that position (centre half-forward) he was a champion,” Coventry wrote in The Sporting Globe in 1938. “For ten years he played in front of me, and could take credit for hundreds of the goals I scored. Murphy helped me in all the games when I scored a big bag of goals.

“Frank had great pace, while his marking was excellent,” Coventry commented. “He could kick with either foot, passing with a deadly accuracy. Whenever I saw he had a chance of getting the ball, I tore into the open and Murphy did the rest. His grand marking was followed up by a quick get-away that left opponents yards behind. He always seemed to be able to get balanced before he kicked, and I could always rely on the ball going to a position that would allow me to take it with ease.”

Frank’s brother Len, himself a Collingwood teammate, added simply: “He was one of the best. He had a great pair of hands, was quick and clever and could do anything.”

Tickster, thanks for regularly updating the spreadsheet, it was incredibly useful to see what position everyone else had available and several times it influenced my selections.

In the next couple of days hopefully I’ll start to get a voting thread going. Ideally, everyone puts their team into the B, HB, C ect. format and on each line explain in a couple of sentences (or more) to justify their selections. Post them in this thread when finished, once everyone has posted I’ll start the voting poll thread. That ensures the OP will include every team from the very start, listed in draft order. I thought this would be fairest, rather than creating the poll thread and if someone got held up posting their team justification they will miss the first minutes/hours/days of voting.

Thanks again to everyone for making this such a success, it’s exceeded even my most optimistic of expectations and has been a fantastic experience in learning more about the players and history of our great club.

I've also added some stats across all teams and players to highlight the number of games per team, goals, B&Fs won, Flags played in and Leading Goalkickers. I could have done more but I had to put a stop somewhere. I've also drawn the line from 1897 as it was easier to find some of this info.

Also just a caveat, while I've tried to check as much as I could, a few errors may have snuck in given I've tried to use fomulas to pull data where I could.

Now these stats are not designed to tell the full story of how good a player or these teams are, it's just purely a fun way of highlighting some numbers (I am a numbers person so I've probably gone overboard!).

Some interesting observations across teams (apologies for not highlighting stats across all teams but hopefully all selectors can gain something anyhow from their teams). It does highlight some fantastic players that we've had.

--Pie4Life - Had the highest number of goals at 2601, despite not having Coventry or McKenna. But he did have Dick Lee, A. Rocca and W.Richardson. Igniter was next at 2325 aided by McKenna followed by Jelly Bean at 2226 which Nuts contributed 1299 of them. Jelly Bean's team had the highest number of leading goalkickers in a season 18, of which Nuts won an astonishing 16 times, followed by Pie4Life at 16 (Dick Lee 11).
--Trickster (myself) - Had the highest number of games at 3194, with only 1 player not having played more than 100 (Horrie Edmond). I certainly valued longevity in my selection. This was followed by Pies4Life whose players totalled 3071 games. At the other end, CitySlicks players played a total of 2143 games while Jelly Beans played 2205.
--My players also played in 35 flags, another consideration which probably tilted my thinking ahead of South of the Yarra whose players played in 32 in total.
--City Slick had the highest number of B&F winners (his players won 13 BnFs in total), followed by Magpies42 (11), and then Pie 4 Life, Raymond 35 and myself with 10. Interestingly, CitySlick had 8 of his 18 players win a B&F at some point.

And in terms of players not selected...

I think there was only 1 B&F winner not chosen (Robert Hyde) and below is a list of players who weren't selected that played over 100 games.

I was close to selecting Jamie Turner, maybe Mark Richardson or Ron McKeown at CHB if Ron Kingston wasn't available and maybe even Kerro in the back pocket if all my other options had gone.

In terms of leading goalkickers not selected, a few more mostly from the start of the 20th century but from the 1950s onwards some notables were Maurie Dunstan (40 and 43 goals in 51 and 52), Ken Smale (47 and 33 in 55 and 56) and who was labelled as the best forward hope since Ron Todd when he arrived (no pressure there) and Jack Anthony (50 goals in 2009).

Sure there are other players in general who some may have wanted to pull the trigger on but didn't not on this list also.

If Michael ends up ranking each of them in order, could also do a vote with the Collingwood board (or even just us). This is probably too extra but trying to work out which is the best of 11 teams looking at all is near impossible so my thought is perhaps doing the following:

Top 7 automatically make it in

Teams 8, 9, 10 and 11 go into a vote for the 8th spot

Qualifying Finals

A: 1 v (winner of bottom four)
B: 4 v 5
C: 3 v 6
D: 2 v 7

Semi-Finals
E: Winner of A vs Winner of B
F: Winner of C vs Winner of D

Grand Final
Winner of E vs Winner of F

It's probably too much, but I just figure could generate some discussion... Imagine for the knockout ones if we could take the role of "coach" and actually comment on how you would coach against the opposition and why you would win? I dunno it could stretch out this whole nostalgia thing and bring up some great discussions.
