You can't excuse playing home games at the G on a yearly basis v Adelaide, west coast, and even a couple against freo, whilst playing only 1 home game against Essendon and Carlton
Melbourne president will speak with Eddie McGuire to help retain Queen’s Birthday hosting rights
MELBOURNE will request to play two games against Collingwood next season as part of the Dees’ attempts to retain hosting rights for the annual Queen’s Birthday blockbuster.
The Herald Sun last month revealed the Magpies were considering reclaiming hosting rights for the lucrative game next year for the first time since 2001.
Demons president Glen Bartlett said he planned to sit down with Collingwood president Eddie McGuire to help find a suitable arrangement for both clubs.
Bartlett said the solution could be as simple as playing two games against Collingwood every year, so the two clubs could both benefit from their growing rivalry.
The game is worth about $900,000 to the hosting club.
“The Queen’s Birthday game we have grown that into a great event and getting behind Neale Daniher and the ‘Big Freeze at the G’ (fundraiser), and Eddie has been terrific in that,” Bartlett said.
“We want to grow the game rather than fighting over Queen’s Birthday or anything like that.
“I’m more interested in working with the AFL and locking in a second game (against Collingwood next year), like we have had had past few years and growing the pie.
“I’m sure if we put our heads together we can work something out, but ultimately it’s a matter for the AFL.”
Melbourne may have to win its last three games of the season to lock in its first finals berth in 11 years, starting with Sunday’s clash against St Kilda at the MCG.
As part of the Dees’ ‘Welcome’ match, up to 20,000 people who are new to football have registered for free tickets.
Bartlett said the club made significant progress this season but wanted to break its decade-long September drought.
“We want to play finals, that’s obvious. But there has been huge development in our team and the brand and quality of footy that we have played at times,” he said.
“We have always said it will be a rocky road, it’s not just a straight line up the ladder and we’ve been tested and they (players) have responded.
“I have a lot of pride and respect in the resilience they’ve shown and the way these boys have been coached and their character.
“Over the next three weeks we are looking forward to further growth and development.”
