Communist Undertones in our flawed voting system.

Jesus you clowns have NFI how good you have it in Australia. Where elections are held on weekends to maximise voter turnouts. Where ballots can be posted in if you can't make it. Where voting is, in fact, manatory for all citizens and its considered a civic duty.

Don't like any of the two majors? That's alright because you have preferential voting. You can vote for whoever represents you the most, and you know that your vote will flow on to the major you most prefer. None of this bullshit vote splitting or 'wasting'. Hardly anywhere else in the world allows you to vote for your principles AND pragmatism. And because of that, you have a multitude of parties and independent voices in your parliament representing a diverse group of principles and people.

Your seats are drawn up by independent bodies. Your political leaders can be arrested. Because no one is above the law.

You are complaining for the sake of it; because thats what people do when they have it so good. Just about every other country in the world would take your system over theirs. Seriously, from the bottom of my heart. * you.

Yeah you've pretty much summed it up

"It tacks on an extra 15m during my saturday morning shopping every 3 years" is s**t. People daily die to fight for a future for their country where they can have it half as good as us, and we still whinge

As much as I think it would produce a more invested political representation if we had a service to the nation required before being given the right to decide what happens to the nation, having compulsory turning up is the best possible way of evening out the extreme positions.

you a fan of Starship Troopers?

We don't live in a pure democracy, we live in a representative democracy. They are slightly different. In Ancient Greece citizens were required to attend public meetings in person, listen to speeches and cast their vote. Now with 23 million people spread out over a whole continent that would be impossible, so we have a representative democracy instead. Our voting system is not a system of government, it is a system for changing governments.

So is NZ imo. But in global rankings Australia is way up there. Living in the US has opened my eyes to exactly how suppressive democracies in the rest of the world can get.

Yep, totally agree with both your posts. I wouldn’t even describe the USA as a democracy at this point. The level of gerrymandering is insane and it’s openly accepted as a feature of the system. Republicans in some cases openly state that they oppose a holiday for Election Day because it would make it easier for more Democrats to be able to vote. USA is an oligarchy. Australia has one of the very best democracies in the world.

And really if people feel disenfranchised - join a political party. Go to branch meetings. It’s open to everyone to participate as much as they want.

Just imagine if we made election day public holiday, and only on Fridays.

You are unaustralian if you don't whinge. It's time honoured aussie tradition.

You want Starship Troopers? We can be brainwashed like Johnny Rico.

One of the most libertarian societies in movies.

People weren't citizens unless they fought in the military.

It was big budget satire that went over your head.

It wasn't the only means of gaining citizenship, it just guaranteed it.

Citizenship didn't even impact a lot of people's lives, do you remember the palace that Rico's parents lived in? They weren't citizens.

What you think you saw you did not see.

Don't bother, its not even his 'opinion', he's just parroting it. There's a big brained Youtuber called Sargon of Akkad who thinks Starship Troopers portrays a libertarian world.

Incidentally, this guy also considers himself left wing so he went and joined UKIP. He's a bit off base to say the least.

Clear rightwingers/conservatives positioning themselves as left-leaning/liberal has become pretty common of late, it's typically disingenuous.
