Conca Vs Heppell

I would be happy with either. I wonder where Conca would have gone if the tigers didn't pick him up. If he had of dropped into the teens whoever got him would be pretty happy.

People who are saying that Heppell is a halfback should look into his junior days a little more.

Won the morrish medal playing as a midfielder, infact got every vote possible playing as a midfielder. That is the best player in the TAC playing as a midfielder.

I know bigfooty will simply ignore this and seeing as he is playing in the backline at the moment.

I know that there were three goals kicked on Anzac Day either by his direct opponent, or because someone beat him - Didak kicked one on him, Blair set up Pendlebury for a goal because Heppell let him get around him at the 50, and there's another one I can't remember off the top of my head.

It's not necessarily the number of goals that have been kicked against him, but the clear mistakes he's made to allow the ones that he has let through. I have observed it this year before and since the Anzac Day game though - I think he let Nicoski past him for one of those snaps on Sunday as well.

It's not an insult - Clearly he's a young player learning the caper defensively, but I don't think he's a natural at it, and I don't think his future lies in defense.

So he had one (or two) kicked on him that you can remember. Over-reaction much?

He's had about 1 kicked on him a week IIRC - hardly leaking goals. Couple of times he's run out of legs and made mistakes in the last 5 minutes of quarters and a couple of times he's been pushed aside by a stronger, older player - that size & tank will come with pre-seasons.

I must say though, I question the logic of someone who picks a fight with someone who genuinely rates Heppell - One of the underwhelming minority who actually voted for Heppell in the poll, for daring to suggest that a first year player might actually have something in his game to work on while he's being played out of his natural position.

He's been absolutely fine defensively, IMHO, not perfect but very good.

I'm far from bashing him but you can't say he hasn't had goals kicked against him? I don't see why you would even argue that?

Don't think that slattery means that no one has kicked any goals at all on him. More that no one has gotten hold of him.. like Milne did to Conca.

Give him another pre-season (and Dempsey back in the side) and he'll move further up the park. He's too light atm, he'd get rag dolled in there.

Was really Hardingham's fault for losing his feet in the middle of the ground.

Nicoskis goal was a kick off the ground in a pack, hardly elementary defensive work there. Seriously it doesn't matter that concedes a goal a game, the amount good third man up spoils and effective rebounding he does saves/earns much more.

I've never been one to predict who will be the better player out of two 1st year kids, and I've always been one to view those that do with scorn.

However its a fun thread, and it interests people, as shown by the multitude of people posting and like the comparison. I, despite my perspective on judging first year players, am enjoying this thread.

I think you will find just about all Tiges here rate both and would be happy either way it turned out, its the odd bomber (like you) who are the ones puzzled the results havnt been a landslide towards Heppell.

You have to take these threads for what they are - very premature - but at the same time, when they're bumped in 4 years they can be pretty entertaining reading, some of the extremes are hilarious in retrospect.

I think there's two top kids with long and elite careers ahead of them, both with smart coaches wanting them to learn as much possible as early as they can. For every goal that Heppell gets kicked on him he will be a better player in the near future. Luckily Conca got a masterclass from Milne in game 2!

As for the 2:1 vote - more a reaction to the thread being started by a Bombers fan looking to reignite "Tiger draft woes" carry-on, than the actual kids in question.

Let's not even bother revisiting the comparison 10 years from now. It's irrelevant.

In my defence, I have read the same thing about "Conca did this because of that so his early form doesn't matter" about 6 times.
It's turning into the "since Morton played midfield and the moon has been in the 3rd quadrant he has averaged 92 touches and 4 goals" of late last year.

The kids good, but he's yet to match Deledio for output in any of Deledio's years.

So much wrong with this post I don't even know where to begin, Heppell has had a great start to his career but he isn't even close to Deledio yet in any way at all.

The sooner Heppell gets moved out of the backline the better, as he's given up a fair few goals this year.

That said, it's a good learning experience for him, but I certainly think that he's not a natural defender, and his best footy will be played up the field.

I'll back him in to have the better career long term, not because I don't rate Conca, but because I think Heppell will be something special.

Heppell is a natural midfielder rather than a defender, although he plays HBF very well. He knows where to run to get the ball, can find it in traffic, get out and dispose of it well. All pretty good attributed for a midfielder. A poster on another forum who was a big fan prior to the draft descibed him something like this: "Heppell is the midfieldiest midfielder that ever midfielded" in response to whether we should be interested in a back flanker with our first pick.

Heppell will move into the middle sooner rather than later, as we badly need a bit more class in there. As to who is better out of him than Conca, I think Heppell is comfortably better at the moment, and the gap will only get wider once he moves into his natural position. But Conca is pretty good too and I would be very happy with him if i was a Richmond supporter. I'd also be pretty happy with Polec if i was a Brisbane supporter, there aren't going to be too many duds from that draft.
